Activate Your Apple ID: Step-by-Step Guide

Card No. 06·6111 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Activating your Apple ID is the process of verifying your email address and signing into Apple services for the first time, which unlocks the App Store, iCloud, iMessage, and more. To activate, you typically go to appleid.apple.com or the Settings app on your device, enter your credentials, and follow the verification link sent to your email. This article walks you through every activation path, common problems, and what to do if you get stuck.

What Is Apple ID Activation?

When you create a new Apple ID, Apple sends a verification email to the address you provided. Activation means confirming that email so Apple knows the account belongs to you. Until you click the link in that email (or enter the code on your device), your Apple ID exists but is not fully active—you can’t buy apps, use iCloud, or sign into iMessage/FaceTime.

Activation also covers the first sign-in on a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or even a Windows PC. The system checks your credentials and may ask for a six-digit verification code sent to your trusted phone number. This two-factor authentication is now standard for most accounts and is a security step, not a separate activation.

How to Activate on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings → tap your name (or Sign in to your iPhone).
  2. Enter your Apple ID email and password.
  3. If prompted, enter the six-digit code sent to your trusted device or phone number.
  4. If you see a message saying “Verify Your Email,” tap Resend or go to your email app and click the link Apple sent.

After signing in, you may be asked to merge data with iCloud or enable Find My iPhone. These are optional but recommended. If you’re setting up a brand-new iPhone, activation happens during the initial setup flow—you’ll be asked to sign in or create an Apple ID before you reach the home screen.

How to Activate on a Mac

On macOS, go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions) → Sign in with your Apple ID at the top of the sidebar. Enter your credentials and the verification code. If you’re using a Mac that was just erased, the Setup Assistant will guide you through signing in with your Apple ID as part of the first boot.

If you don’t have an Apple ID yet, you can create one directly in that window. Apple will send a verification email—click the link in that email to complete activation. On some Macs, you might also see a prompt to enter your Mac’s password to update settings like Apple Pay and iCloud Keychain.

How to Activate on the Web (appleid.apple.com)

If you’re on a Windows PC, Android, or just prefer a browser, go to appleid.apple.com and sign in. If your account is not yet verified, you’ll see a banner saying “Email verification required.” Click Resend to get a new email, then open that email and click Verify Now.

You can also use this site to change your password, update trusted phone numbers, or review your devices. Activation on the web is useful if you’re locked out of your device or need to verify a new email address after changing it.

Common Activation Problems and Fixes

  • Verification email never arrives: Check spam/junk folders, add appleid@id.apple.com to your contacts, and wait 10–15 minutes. If it still doesn’t appear, use “Resend” on the sign-in page.
  • Code not received for two-factor authentication: Make sure your trusted phone number is correct. If you don’t have the code, tap “Didn’t get a code?” and choose a text or call. On a trusted device, the code appears automatically as a notification.
  • “This Apple ID is not active” error: This usually means the account was disabled for security reasons. Go to iforgot.apple.com and follow the account recovery steps—you may need to answer security questions or wait for a recovery email.
  • Activation lock after buying a used iPhone: If the previous owner’s Apple ID is still linked, you’ll see “Activation Lock” on the setup screen. You must ask the original owner to remove the device from their account at iCloud.com/find, or provide proof of purchase to Apple Support.
  • Stuck on “Verifying” screen: Force-restart your device (press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Power until the Apple logo appears) and try again with a stable Wi-Fi connection.

What If You Forgot Your Password?

You can’t activate an Apple ID without the password. Go to iforgot.apple.com, enter your Apple ID email, and follow the prompts. You’ll be asked to verify your identity via email or security questions. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you can reset the password using a trusted device—go to Settings → your name → Password & Security → Change Password. After resetting, you can sign in and complete activation.

Activation vs. Two-Factor Authentication

Many people confuse these. Activation is a one-time email verification that proves you own the email address. Two-factor authentication is an ongoing security feature that requires a code every time you sign in on a new device. Since 2015, Apple has required two-factor for most new accounts, so you’ll see both steps when you first sign in. If you have an older account without two-factor, you may only see the email verification—but Apple strongly recommends turning on two-factor in Settings → your name → Password & Security.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Apple ID activation take?

Email verification is instant once you click the link. Two-factor codes are sent immediately. If you’re doing account recovery (forgot password and no trusted devices), it can take a few hours to a few days while Apple verifies your identity.

Can I activate my Apple ID without an iPhone?

Yes. Use any web browser at appleid.apple.com. You can create and verify an account there, then sign in on any Apple device later.

Why does my Apple ID say “unverified”?

That means you haven’t clicked the verification link in the email Apple sent when you created the account. Check your inbox (and spam) for a message from Apple, click the link, and sign in again.

Is it safe to click the verification link in the email?

Only if the email is genuinely from Apple. Check the sender address—it should end in @apple.com or @id.apple.com. Never click links in emails that ask for your password or personal details. If unsure, go directly to appleid.apple.com and check for a verification banner.

What happens if I never verify my Apple ID?

You can’t use iCloud, buy apps, or use iMessage/FaceTime. The account will remain in an inactive state, and Apple may eventually delete it if it’s unused for a long time. You can still sign in to appleid.apple.com to resend the verification email.

Can I activate an Apple ID on a Windows computer?

Yes. Use a web browser to sign in at appleid.apple.com and verify your email. You can also download iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store, which lets you sign in and use iCloud Drive, Photos, and Mail on your PC.
