AirTag Not Connecting? Try These Fixes

Card No. 06·55272 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

If your AirTag is not connecting to your iPhone, the issue is almost always a dead battery, a blocked Bluetooth signal, or a stale pairing session. Start by removing and reinserting the AirTag’s battery, then hold it next to your iPhone; if that doesn’t trigger the setup screen, reset the AirTag by pressing the battery until you hear a sound, then pair it again.

How AirTag Connection Works

AirTags use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to communicate with your iPhone, and they rely on the Find My network to report their location when out of Bluetooth range. When you bring an AirTag near an iPhone, the phone should show a setup animation and pair it to your Apple ID. After pairing, the AirTag sends a Bluetooth signal that your iPhone can measure to show distance and direction using Ultra Wideband (UWB) on supported models (iPhone 11 and later). If the AirTag is not connecting, the problem is usually in one of these layers: the battery, the Bluetooth link, or the Find My network connection.

Quick Fixes to Try First

  1. Check the battery: A CR2032 coin cell battery typically lasts about a year. If the AirTag is not connecting, replace the battery with a fresh one. Remove the battery, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert it until you hear a chime.
  2. Toggle Bluetooth: On your iPhone, go to Control Center and turn Bluetooth off, wait 5 seconds, then turn it back on. This clears temporary Bluetooth glitches.
  3. Restart your iPhone: A simple restart can fix many connection issues, especially after iOS updates.
  4. Update iOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update to ensure you have the latest version, which may include AirTag bug fixes.
  5. Move closer: Bring the AirTag within a few centimeters of your iPhone. If you are more than a meter away, the setup prompt may not appear.

How to Reset an AirTag

If the quick fixes don’t work, a full reset is the next step. This clears the AirTag’s pairing information and lets you connect it as a new device.

  1. Press down on the polished stainless steel cover and rotate it counterclockwise until it stops (about a quarter turn).
  2. Remove the cover and take out the battery.
  3. Replace the battery and press down on it until you hear a sound. This sound indicates the battery is connected.
  4. Remove the battery again, then reinsert it and hold it down until you hear a second sound (a higher-pitched chime). This confirms the reset.
  5. Replace the cover and align the three tabs, then rotate clockwise until it clicks.
  6. Hold the AirTag next to your iPhone and follow the on-screen pairing steps.

If you don’t hear the second sound, repeat the process. The reset only takes a few seconds and does not require any tools.

Common Connection Problems and Solutions

  • AirTag not showing up in Find My: Open the Find My app, tap the Items tab, and pull down to refresh. If it still doesn’t appear, go to Settings > your name > Find My and make sure Find My iPhone is enabled.
  • AirTag says “Not Reachable”: This usually means the AirTag is out of Bluetooth range or its battery is low. If you’re near the AirTag, move closer. If you’re far away, it may be in a location without any Apple devices nearby to relay its location.
  • AirTag is playing a sound but not connecting: This often indicates the AirTag is already paired to another Apple ID. You need to reset the AirTag as described above to unpair it from the previous owner.
  • AirTag shows “Pairing Limit Reached”: Apple allows you to have up to 16 AirTags on one Apple ID. If you’ve reached that limit, you must remove an existing AirTag before adding a new one.
  • AirTag not connecting after battery replacement: Ensure the battery is inserted with the positive (+) side facing up. Also, check that the battery’s protective film (if any) is removed.

When to Replace the Battery

AirTag batteries typically last about a year, but the exact lifespan depends on usage. If you’ve had your AirTag for more than 11 months and it stops connecting, a dead battery is the most likely cause. You can check battery status in the Find My app: tap on the AirTag and look for the battery icon. If it shows red or low, replace it. Use a fresh CR2032 lithium coin battery (not rechargeable). Avoid using batteries with a bitter coating (often used to deter children from swallowing) because that coating can prevent the AirTag from making a good electrical contact.

AirTag vs. Other Trackers: A Quick Comparison

AirTags are designed exclusively for the Apple ecosystem. They don’t have built-in GPS; instead, they rely on nearby Apple devices to report their location via the Find My network. This means they work best in areas with high Apple device density, such as cities. In rural areas, the network coverage may be sparse. In contrast, some other trackers (like those using GPS or cellular) can work independently but require a subscription and have shorter battery life. AirTags have no subscription fee and use a standard coin battery. For Android users, AirTags are not compatible; you would need a different tracker that works with Android’s Find My Device network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AirTag not connecting to my iPhone?

Most often it’s a dead battery or a stale Bluetooth connection. Replace the battery, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and restart your iPhone. If that fails, reset the AirTag by pressing the battery until you hear a chime.

How do I know if my AirTag battery is dead?

In the Find My app, tap on the AirTag and look at the battery icon. If it’s red or shows a low battery warning, replace it. You can also try playing a sound; if no sound plays, the battery is likely dead.

Can I use an AirTag with an Android phone?

No. AirTags require an iPhone or iPad with Find My support. Android devices cannot pair with or track AirTags.

How many AirTags can I have on one Apple ID?

Apple allows up to 16 AirTags per Apple ID. If you try to add a 17th, you’ll see a “Pairing Limit Reached” message and must remove one first.

My AirTag is not playing a sound. What should I do?

First, check the battery. If it’s new, try resetting the AirTag. If it still doesn’t play a sound, the speaker may be faulty, and you should contact Apple Support.

Does AirTag work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. AirTags use Bluetooth to connect to your iPhone and the Find My network to relay location via any nearby Apple device. Wi-Fi is not required for the AirTag itself, but your iPhone needs an internet connection to update the location.
