Apple Intelligence: Which Devices Are Supported?

Card No. 06·25574 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Apple Intelligence is supported on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the iPhone 16 family and later compatible iPhones, iPads and Macs with an Apple silicon M1 chip or newer, and Apple Vision Pro. It is not available on every Apple device: in particular, iPhone 15 and 15 Plus do not support it, and older iPads and Macs without Apple silicon are excluded.

What Apple Intelligence is

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s set of generative AI and machine-learning features built into supported operating systems. Depending on the device, region, language and software version, features can include writing tools, notification summaries, image generation, photo-editing assistance, a more capable Siri experience, and integration with ChatGPT.

Support is not simply a matter of whether a device can run the latest iOS, iPadOS or macOS. Apple sets hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence, including a sufficiently capable processor and enough memory. As a result, some relatively recent Apple products can install a current operating-system release but still cannot use Apple Intelligence.

Supported iPhone models

For iPhone, Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a compatible iPhone 16 or later model. That includes the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, as well as subsequent iPhone generations that meet Apple’s published requirements.

  • Supported starting models: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • Supported newer family: iPhone 16 models and newer compatible models.
  • Not supported: iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, along with earlier iPhone models.

The difference between iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro is a common source of confusion. They came out in the same generation, but only the Pro models meet the Apple Intelligence hardware requirement. A newer operating-system update does not add the missing hardware capability to a non-supported phone.

Supported iPad, Mac and Vision Pro

On iPad and Mac, the key requirement is an Apple silicon M1 chip or later. Compatible iPads include models with M1, M2, M3 or newer Apple silicon, such as supported iPad Pro and iPad Air models. Compatible Macs include Apple-silicon MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro models beginning with M1-era configurations.

Not every product name alone tells you whether a device qualifies. For example, some older iPad Pro and Mac models use Intel processors, and those do not qualify just because they are called “Pro.” Check the chip listed in Settings or System Information rather than relying on the product’s size, age or name.

Apple Vision Pro also supports Apple Intelligence with the required software and language settings. Support across product families can change as Apple updates its requirements, so consult Apple’s current compatibility information when checking a newly released model.

How to check your device

Start by identifying the exact model and processor, then check that the operating system is up to date. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > About to see the model information; the Software Update screen is under Settings > General > Software Update. On a Mac, open the Apple menu and select About This Mac to see the chip and macOS version.

  1. Confirm the device is one of the supported iPhone models, or that an iPad or Mac has M1-or-newer Apple silicon.
  2. Install a compatible, current version of iOS, iPadOS or macOS through Software Update.
  3. Check the device’s language and region settings. Availability and individual features can vary by language and location.
  4. Look in Settings for the Apple Intelligence options, or consult Apple’s support page if the option does not appear.

Available storage can matter because some Apple Intelligence models and resources are downloaded to the device. Keep adequate free space and a reliable internet connection while installing updates or required resources. Exact storage requirements can change with software releases and features.

Why a compatible device may not show the features

Having eligible hardware is necessary, but it may not be sufficient for every feature to appear immediately. The operating system must support Apple Intelligence, the feature must be available in the user’s language and region, and setup or downloads may still be pending. Apple rolls out capabilities over time, so feature availability can differ between releases and markets.

  • Check for software updates: A supported device running an older system version may not show newer capabilities.
  • Review language and region: Some features require a supported device language and may not be offered everywhere.
  • Allow setup to finish: Downloads or indexing can take time, particularly after an update.
  • Check free storage and connectivity: Low storage or an interrupted download can prevent setup from completing.
  • Distinguish eligibility from a specific feature: A device may support Apple Intelligence overall while a particular tool or integration is unavailable in its region or software release.

Restarting the device after updating can help resolve a stalled setup, but it cannot make an unsupported model compatible. If a feature is missing after checking these points, verify Apple’s current feature availability and device requirements before troubleshooting further.

Privacy, processing and ChatGPT

Apple describes Apple Intelligence as using a combination of on-device processing and, for requests that need more capability, Private Cloud Compute. Which approach is used depends on the task. Apple says Private Cloud Compute is designed to handle eligible requests without storing the data or making it accessible to Apple; this is a description of Apple’s system design, not a guarantee that every AI-related interaction is processed identically.

ChatGPT integration is an optional part of the experience, not a requirement for owning a supported device or using all Apple Intelligence features. When a request is routed to ChatGPT, the system explains the handoff and asks for permission where required. Users can choose whether to connect an account; available controls and prompts may differ by software version and region. Review the relevant privacy settings and prompts if you plan to share personal or sensitive material with any AI service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the regular iPhone 15 support Apple Intelligence?
No. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are not supported. The supported iPhone 15 models are the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Does Apple Intelligence work on an M1 Mac?
Yes, M1 Macs meet the Apple silicon chip requirement, provided the Mac is running a compatible version of macOS and the feature is available for its language and region.

Can a software update make an unsupported iPhone compatible?
No. An update can add features to eligible hardware, but it cannot supply the processor and memory capabilities required by Apple Intelligence.

Does Apple Intelligence require ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT integration is optional. Some requests can use it, but Apple Intelligence includes other features that do not require a ChatGPT account.

Why is Apple Intelligence missing on my supported device?
Check that the operating system is current, the device language and region are supported, setup downloads have completed and enough storage is free. Feature availability can also vary by release and location.
