Apple Intelligence in China: Accounts, Languages, Devices

Card No. 06·25549 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Apple Intelligence availability in China depends on where you are, your Apple Account’s country or region, your device, and its software language—not simply on whether you own a compatible iPhone. Apple has said that, while the service is not currently available for devices purchased in mainland China, availability for devices bought elsewhere also depends on the account region and the user’s location.

Why availability in China is different

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s set of generative features built into supported operating systems. Its rollout is not identical in every market: language support, local service availability, and regulatory requirements affect which features can be offered and when. Mainland China therefore requires a more careful answer than “update your iPhone and turn it on.”

Apple’s published availability guidance distinguishes devices purchased in mainland China from devices purchased outside mainland China. It has stated that Apple Intelligence is not currently available on devices purchased in mainland China. For a device purchased elsewhere, Apple says the feature is unavailable when the user is in mainland China and their Apple Account country or region is also set to China. Apple also cautions that availability may change as local requirements are met.

These conditions are about the service’s availability, not just the device’s technical ability. A supported iPhone can meet the hardware requirement and still have no access to Apple Intelligence in a particular combination of location, account region, and software configuration.

How account region and location affect access

An Apple Account country or region is a setting associated with the account and its services. It is not the same thing as your current physical location, the country where your phone was originally activated, or the language you selected for iOS. For mainland China availability, Apple’s guidance makes both the account region and physical location relevant for devices purchased outside mainland China.

Changing an account region should not be treated as a reliable workaround. Apple Intelligence may remain unavailable because of where you are or where the device was purchased, and changing the region can affect other account services. Apple may require you to use any remaining store credit, cancel subscriptions, or provide a valid payment method and billing address for the new region. Check Apple’s current instructions before making a change, and do not change account details based on the assumption that it will unlock the feature.

  • Device purchase location: A device purchased in mainland China is specifically covered by Apple’s stated restriction.
  • Current location: Being in mainland China can affect access, including for devices bought elsewhere.
  • Apple Account region: For a device bought outside mainland China, an account set to China while the user is in mainland China is a combination Apple identifies as unavailable.
  • Software language and version: These determine whether a supported language and the needed system features are available; they do not override regional restrictions.

Supported devices and system requirements

Apple Intelligence requires compatible hardware, not just a recent-looking design or the latest iOS version. Apple’s supported-device list includes iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models and later supported generations. On iPad and Mac, compatible models include those with M-series chips; Apple also lists iPad mini with A17 Pro. The exact list can change, so check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence compatibility page for your model and region.

For iPhone, an iPhone 15 or 15 Plus does not qualify merely because it is part of the same generation as the Pro models. Likewise, a compatible Mac or iPad does not guarantee service availability in mainland China. You also need a supported operating-system release, enough available storage for the required on-device models, and the feature enabled in Settings. Apple’s requirements have changed over time, so use the device’s Software Update screen and Apple’s current instructions rather than relying on an old minimum-version number.

To check a device, open Settings > General > About on iPhone or iPad and note the model name. On Mac, use the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Compare the model with Apple’s up-to-date compatibility list before troubleshooting language or account settings.

Languages, Chinese support, and switching languages

Apple Intelligence works only when the device and Siri are set to the same supported language. Apple’s language list has expanded through software updates, and availability can vary by feature. Do not assume that choosing a Chinese keyboard, adding a Chinese dictionary, or setting the region to China makes Apple Intelligence available in Chinese.

Apple has announced that support for additional languages, including Chinese, is planned, but a future announcement is not the same as current availability. Check Apple’s current language-support page and release notes for the specific version installed on your device. If you switch the device or Siri language, Apple says the feature may be unavailable while the new language is downloading; allow time for the download and confirm that both settings match.

Language and region are separate settings. For example, an iPhone can use English as its system language while its region is set to China. That combination does not itself establish eligibility in mainland China, because account region, purchase location, and physical location can still matter.

What to check before troubleshooting

If Apple Intelligence does not appear or will not enable, work through the conditions in a sensible order. This helps distinguish an eligibility restriction from a temporary setup issue.

  1. Confirm the exact model is on Apple’s current compatible-device list.
  2. Check that the operating system is up to date in Settings > General > Software Update (or System Settings on Mac).
  3. Review where the device was purchased, your current location, and the country or region shown for your Apple Account.
  4. Set the device language and Siri language to the same language that Apple currently lists as supported.
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi and power, leave sufficient storage available, and allow any required model downloads to finish.
  6. Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri on a supported iPhone or iPad and follow the available prompts. The wording or controls may differ by operating-system release.

If the device, region, and language appear eligible but the feature is still missing, restart the device and recheck Apple’s service availability and support documentation. A restart cannot remove a regional restriction. Contact Apple Support if you need help checking account or device eligibility; do not share your password or verification codes with anyone claiming they can unlock the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Apple Intelligence in mainland China?
Availability is restricted. Apple says it is not currently available on devices purchased in mainland China. For devices purchased elsewhere, location and Apple Account region also matter; consult Apple’s latest availability guidance for your precise situation.

Will changing my Apple Account region unlock it?
Not necessarily. Apple identifies purchase location and physical location as relevant, and changing the account region can affect purchases, subscriptions, and payment details. It is not a dependable way to bypass availability restrictions.

Does Apple Intelligence support Chinese?
Language support depends on the current software release and feature. Check Apple’s current language list; an announcement that Chinese support is planned does not mean it is available on every device today.

Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
Apple’s compatible iPhone list includes iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and supported iPhone 16 models and later generations. Check the official list for your exact model, because standard iPhone 15 models are not included just by being recent.

Why can a compatible iPhone still lack Apple Intelligence?
Hardware is only one requirement. Location, purchase market, Apple Account region, operating-system version, matching supported device and Siri languages, and completion of model downloads can all affect access.

Where to verify the latest rules

Apple’s availability and language support can change as software updates and regional requirements evolve. Before buying a device or changing account settings, check Apple’s official Apple Intelligence feature availability, compatible-device, and language-support pages, plus the support information for your installed operating system. Those sources are more reliable than a model’s marketing name or a third-party claim that changing one setting will make the feature work.
