Apple Intelligence: Features, Devices, Privacy and Limits

Card No. 06·25535 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s system of generative AI and machine-learning features built into compatible iPhones, iPads and Macs. It can help rewrite text, summarize notifications, create certain images, search photos in natural language and use a more capable Siri; availability depends on the device, software version, language and region.

What Apple Intelligence includes

Apple introduced Apple Intelligence as a set of features integrated into its operating systems rather than as one standalone chatbot. The aim is to bring writing, image and assistant tools into apps and everyday tasks. Which features appear can change as Apple updates its software, and not every function is available everywhere.

  • Writing Tools: Rewrite, proofread or summarize selected text in supported apps. Options can adjust tone or turn text into a concise summary, a list or a table.
  • Notification and message summaries: Condense some incoming alerts or message threads so a user can scan the main point. Summaries are interpretations, not guaranteed accurate replacements for the original.
  • Image tools: Image Playground can generate stylized images, while Genmoji can make custom emoji-like images from descriptions. Clean Up can remove selected distractions from some photos.
  • Photo search and memory creation: Search can understand descriptions of people, objects or scenes in a library, and a user can request a memory film using a prompt.
  • Siri changes: Siri can draw on more conversational language understanding and system context, with features such as typing requests and improved handling when a user changes phrasing.
  • ChatGPT integration: With permission, supported Siri and Writing Tools requests can be passed to ChatGPT for tasks that Apple’s own features do not handle directly.

How it works

Apple describes a hybrid approach. Some requests are handled on the device, which can reduce the need to send personal content elsewhere. More demanding requests may use Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s server-side system designed to process requests without retaining them or making them accessible to Apple. Apple says the system uses Apple silicon servers and that its software can be inspected by independent security researchers.

That design is not the same as saying every feature runs locally or that every request is private in exactly the same way. A feature may need online services, and an optional ChatGPT handoff involves a separate provider. When a request is sent to ChatGPT, the device asks for permission unless the user has chosen settings that allow certain handoffs; signing in to a ChatGPT account can also affect what account terms apply. Check the permission prompt and current privacy details before sharing sensitive text.

In practical terms, the system tries to match a task to an available model and processing route. A rewrite of a short message may be handled locally, while a request requiring broader knowledge could offer an external model. Apple’s implementation and available options evolve, so exact behavior can depend on software updates and settings.

Compatible devices and availability

Apple Intelligence requires supported hardware, not merely a recent operating system. At launch, Apple specified iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and later iPhone 16 models; on iPad and Mac, support requires an M-series chip or a supported iPad mini with A17 Pro. The compatible-device list can expand, so confirm the current requirements for the particular feature before buying or updating a device.

Software support is also necessary. The device must be running a compatible release of iOS, iPadOS or macOS, and Apple may require the device language and Siri language to be set to the same supported language. Availability has expanded over time and can differ by country or region. Some features, such as image generation or third-party model access, may have separate regional or age-related restrictions.

Apple Intelligence does not generally require a separate subscription from Apple, but this does not mean that all related services are free in every circumstance. ChatGPT account features and limits are determined by OpenAI, and network access may be needed for some requests. A compatible device, current software and supported language are the first checks when a feature is missing.

Privacy, accuracy and practical limits

Privacy protections reduce some risks but do not make generated output inherently reliable. A summary can omit a key detail, a rewritten paragraph can change the intended tone, and an answer can be wrong. For important instructions, dates, names or claims, compare the result with the original source before acting or forwarding it.

  • Read the original message or document when details matter; do not treat a summary as a complete record.
  • Review generated text before sending it, especially if it contains commitments, factual claims or a sensitive tone.
  • Use discretion with confidential information, particularly when a request may be handed to an external service.
  • Keep copies of original photos or text when editing, and inspect image changes for unintended alterations.

Generative image features also have boundaries: they create stylized content rather than guaranteeing a faithful depiction of a real person or event. Clean Up edits a photograph and can produce visual artifacts. These tools are best understood as creative aids, not evidence or authoritative records.

Apple Intelligence compared with ChatGPT and other assistants

Apple Intelligence is most distinctive as an operating-system layer: its tools can appear in supported apps and connect with notifications, photos and Siri. ChatGPT is a general-purpose conversational assistant with its own app, models, account options and service policies. Apple’s integration can route some requests to ChatGPT, but the two products are not identical and Apple Intelligence does not turn every Siri question into a ChatGPT conversation.

Other phone and computer assistants may offer similar writing, summarization or image-generation functions, but their device support, cloud processing, languages and app integrations differ. A useful comparison is not simply which assistant sounds more capable. Consider the tasks you actually need, whether your hardware qualifies, how each service handles data, and whether its answers can be checked against reliable sources.

Getting started and fixing missing features

On a compatible device, update to a software version that supports Apple Intelligence, then look in Settings on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on Mac, for the Apple Intelligence options. Follow any setup prompts, including downloading required components and selecting supported language settings. Feature names and locations can shift between software releases.

  1. Confirm the exact device model and chip against Apple’s current compatibility list.
  2. Install the latest compatible operating-system update and make sure the device has enough free storage for required downloads.
  3. Check that the device and Siri use a supported, matching language, and that the feature is available in your region.
  4. Review Apple Intelligence settings and any permission prompts for ChatGPT or other connected services.
  5. If a feature remains unavailable, restart the device and check Apple’s current support information; staged releases or regional restrictions may apply.

A common misconception is that every iPhone capable of installing the latest iOS automatically supports Apple Intelligence. Compatibility depends on hardware as well as software. Another is that asking Siri a question guarantees a ChatGPT response: ChatGPT integration is an optional route for some requests, not a replacement for every Siri function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple Intelligence free?
Apple does not generally charge a separate fee for Apple Intelligence itself on a compatible device. A connected ChatGPT account may have its own plan, features or limits.

Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
Support began with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and includes iPhone 16 models. Check Apple’s up-to-date list because newer models and software releases may change the supported range.

Does Apple Intelligence send everything to the cloud?
No. Apple says many requests are processed on device, while more demanding tasks may use Private Cloud Compute. Some optional requests can involve ChatGPT, so review prompts and service settings rather than assuming every task follows the same route.

Can I use Apple Intelligence without ChatGPT?
Yes. Apple’s built-in writing, photo, image and Siri features do not all depend on ChatGPT. You can decline a ChatGPT handoff when prompted and still use features that are handled by Apple’s system.

Why can’t I see Apple Intelligence on my device?
The model may not be supported, the operating system may need an update, or the device’s language, region or setup may not meet current requirements. Check all of these before troubleshooting individual apps.
