Apple TV Subscriptions: Services, Costs and How They Work

Card No. 06·17799 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Apple TV subscriptions can mean either Apple TV+, Apple’s own streaming service, or the collection of subscription video services you can watch through the Apple TV app. You can subscribe to Apple TV+ or, where offered, add third-party channels in the app; other services may require a separate subscription and app even if their shows appear in Apple TV search results.

Apple TV, Apple TV+ and the Apple TV app

The names are easy to confuse. Apple TV+ is a paid video-streaming service with Apple Originals, including series, films and documentaries. Apple TV is also the name of Apple’s hardware streaming box. The Apple TV app is the viewing and discovery app available on Apple devices and on many smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles.

The app can show several kinds of content: Apple TV+ titles, movies or episodes available to buy or rent, and programs connected to other services. Seeing a title in the app does not mean it is included with Apple TV+ or free. The title’s page identifies whether it is included with a subscription, requires a separate service, or is available for a rental or purchase.

Which video services can you subscribe to?

Apple TV+ is Apple’s own subscription. In addition, the Apple TV app offers Apple TV Channels in supported countries and regions. Channels are subscriptions to participating providers that can be billed through Apple and watched inside the Apple TV app. The selection varies by location and changes over time, so there is no single worldwide list of available channels.

Many other streaming companies have their own apps and subscriptions. Their shows may be discoverable through the Apple TV app’s search or watch-list features, but that does not automatically make them Apple TV Channels or part of Apple TV+. You may need to install the provider’s app, create or use an account with that provider, and pay it directly. Availability and integration differ by device, country and service.

  • Apple TV+: Apple’s subscription catalog of Apple Originals.
  • Apple TV Channels: participating third-party subscriptions managed and played through the Apple TV app, where available.
  • Separate streaming apps: subscriptions billed by their providers, even when their titles appear in Apple TV search.
  • Store rentals and purchases: individual titles that are not necessarily included in any subscription.

How subscriptions work in the Apple TV app

On a supported device, open the Apple TV app, sign in with your Apple Account, and look for a channel or subscription offer. The app displays the terms before you confirm. A subscription purchased through Apple is generally managed through the Apple Account used to subscribe, while a subscription purchased directly from a streaming provider is managed with that provider.

After subscribing to a Channel, its eligible programs can be played in the Apple TV app without switching to the provider’s separate app. By contrast, when a title links to an outside service, the app may direct you to that service or prompt you to open its app. Follow the subscription and playback information shown on the title page rather than assuming that all search results share one bill or catalog.

Apple TV app features and channel availability depend on the device and region. Some televisions and streaming devices support the app but not every feature available on Apple hardware. Check the app’s listing and the provider’s requirements for your specific device before subscribing.

Costs, trials and bundles

There is no single price for “Apple TV subscriptions.” Apple TV+ has its own recurring subscription price, while each Apple TV Channel sets its own terms. Prices, taxes, trial offers, billing periods and availability can vary by country and can change. A third-party service subscribed to outside Apple sets its own price and payment rules.

Apple may offer Apple TV+ as part of an eligible Apple services bundle, such as Apple One, or through a promotion. Eligibility and included services depend on the offer and region. Before confirming, check whether the offer renews automatically, when billing begins, and which account will be charged. A free trial can become a paid subscription unless it is canceled under the stated terms.

  • Check the renewal date and billing period shown before you subscribe.
  • Confirm whether a service is a Channel billed by Apple or a separate provider subscription.
  • Look for duplicate subscriptions if you already pay for the same service elsewhere.
  • Review bundle terms rather than assuming every service or add-on is included.

Choosing between Apple TV+ and other services

Start with the programs you actually want to watch. Apple TV+ is a fit if its Apple Originals are the main draw. A Channel can be convenient when you want a participating provider’s catalog within the Apple TV app and prefer Apple-managed billing. A standalone service may make more sense if it offers the device support, features or catalog you need outside Apple TV.

Also consider how you watch. If several people share a household account, check the service’s household, profile and simultaneous-streaming rules. If you watch while traveling or offline, verify whether downloads are supported for that service and device. These features are set by each provider and should not be assumed from the Apple TV app alone.

The app can help you find a title, but it is not a universal subscription pass. Search results can include content that costs extra, belongs to a third-party subscription, or is unavailable in your region. Open the title details and note the stated provider and price before pressing play or subscribing.

Canceling and fixing common problems

If you subscribed through Apple, check subscriptions in your Apple Account settings on an Apple device, or use the account and subscription options provided for your device. Select the relevant service to review or cancel it. If the subscription is billed directly by another provider, cancellation normally has to be completed with that provider. Removing an app does not cancel a subscription.

If a program is missing or playback fails, try these checks:

  1. Confirm that you are signed in to the account that holds the subscription.
  2. Check the title page to verify the correct provider, availability and any extra charge.
  3. Make sure the subscription is active and the app or device is supported in your region.
  4. Update the Apple TV app or device software, then close and reopen the app.
  5. If the provider bills you directly, check its app or account page for service-specific issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple TV+ included with the Apple TV app?
The app is a way to find and watch content; it is not itself a subscription. Apple TV+ requires an active subscription or an eligible offer.

Are all Apple TV app shows included in Apple TV+?
No. The app can display Apple TV+ titles, third-party services, and movies or episodes available to rent or buy. Check each title’s details.

Can I watch Netflix through Apple TV?
Netflix and other services may be available through their own apps on supported devices. Their presence or search results in Apple TV do not make them Apple TV Channels or include their subscription in Apple TV+.

Where do I cancel an Apple TV subscription?
Cancel through the Apple Account subscription settings if Apple bills you. If the provider bills you directly, cancel through that provider. Deleting an app alone does not stop billing.

Do Apple TV Channels work everywhere?
No. Channel availability, device support and app features vary by country or region and can change. Check the offer shown in your Apple TV app and the provider’s current requirements.
