The Apple Watch Smart Stack is a widget system that automatically displays timely information on your watch face, accessed by swiping up or turning the Digital Crown. You interact with it by scrolling through a vertical list of widgets that change based on context, such as time, location, and activity. This guide explains how the Smart Stack works, how to customize it, and how to get the most out of it on watchOS 10 and later.
Formula
The Smart Stack itself doesn’t have a mathematical formula, but the pace calculation shown in the widget example above uses two simple formulas:
- Average pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
- Average speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Where:
- t = finish time in minutes
- d = distance in kilometers
Worked Example
Using the default values from the calculator (t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km):
- Average pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Average speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So a 10 km run in 50 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per kilometer and an average speed of 12 km/h.
What Is the Smart Stack?
Introduced in watchOS 10, the Smart Stack replaces the old Control Center swipe-up gesture on the watch face. Instead of quick settings, swiping up (or turning the Digital Crown) now reveals a scrollable list of widgets. The system orders these widgets based on what it thinks you need at that moment. For example, early in the morning you might see the Weather widget first, while during a workout you’d see the Activity rings or Workout app.
The Smart Stack is not a separate app; it’s a layer that sits above your watch face. You can access it from any watch face, and it disappears when you tap a widget to open the corresponding app.
How to Access and Navigate the Smart Stack
There are two ways to open the Smart Stack:
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the watch face.
- Turn the Digital Crown upward (clockwise) from the watch face.
Once open, you can:
- Scroll through widgets using your finger or the Digital Crown.
- Tap a widget to open the related app.
- Swipe down or press the Digital Crown to close the stack and return to the watch face.
The top widget is called the “Smart Stack” headline widget. It’s often a large, contextual widget that changes based on your routine. For instance, if you have an alarm set, the next alarm time appears as the top widget in the evening.
How to Customize the Smart Stack
You can control which widgets appear and in what order, though the system will still automatically reorder them based on context. To customize:
- Open the Smart Stack on your watch.
- Press and hold a widget until it jiggles or shows a context menu.
- Tap the pin icon to keep that widget at the top (pinned widgets stay fixed).
- Tap the minus icon to remove the widget from the stack.
- Tap Edit Widgets (or go to the Watch app on your iPhone) to add new widgets.
On your iPhone, open the Watch app, tap the Smart Stack tab (or “Widgets” in some versions). There you can:
- Add widgets from a list of supported apps.
- Reorder widgets by dragging the hamburger icon.
- Toggle “Smart Ordering” on or off. When off, widgets stay in the order you set.
Note that even with Smart Ordering off, some system widgets may still appear at the top in certain situations (like the Now Playing widget during media playback).
Common Problems and Fixes
Users often encounter a few issues with the Smart Stack:
- Smart Stack not appearing on swipe up: This usually happens if you have an older watchOS version. Update to watchOS 10 or later. Also, check that you haven’t accidentally changed the gesture in Settings > Gestures.
- Widgets not updating: Force close the Watch app on your iPhone, then reopen it. On the watch, restart it by holding the side button and turning it off/on.
- Pinned widgets not staying pinned: Make sure you’re tapping the pin icon correctly. A pinned widget shows a small pin icon next to it. If you have many pinned widgets, they all stay at the top, but the system may still reorder among them based on context.
- Smart Stack feels cluttered: Remove widgets you don’t need via the Watch app. You can keep only 5-6 essential ones.
Smart Stack vs. Watch Faces and Control Center
Many users confuse the Smart Stack with the old Control Center. Here’s the difference:
- Control Center (access by pressing the side button) contains toggles like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery, and mute. It’s still there, just moved to the side button.
- Watch faces show complications, which are static shortcuts. The Smart Stack is dynamic and shows more detailed information.
- Smart Stack is a separate layer, not a watch face. You can’t replace your watch face with it, but you can make it the first thing you see by setting a watch face that has no complications and then swiping up.
If you prefer the old behavior (swipe up for Control Center), you can’t change it back in watchOS 10. You’ll need to use the side button for Control Center.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Smart Stack
- Use widgets that update often: Weather, Calendar, Activity, and Now Playing are the most useful.
- Pin your daily essentials: If you always check your Activity rings first thing, pin the Activity widget.
- Take advantage of contextual widgets: The system shows the Timer widget when you’re cooking, or the Remote widget when you’re near a TV. Don’t fight it; let the Smart Stack do its job.
- Add third-party widgets: Apps like Spotify, Streaks, and Carrot Weather have widgets that work in the Smart Stack.
- Use the Smart Stack with Siri: Some widgets, like Siri Suggestions, appear based on your usage. The more you use your watch, the smarter it gets.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off the Smart Stack? You can’t completely disable the Smart Stack on watchOS 10 or later. The only way to avoid it is to never swipe up or turn the Digital Crown. However, you can disable “Smart Ordering” so widgets stay in a fixed order, making it feel more like a static list.
Why is the Smart Stack not showing on my Apple Watch? The most common reason is that your watch is running watchOS 9 or earlier. The Smart Stack is a watchOS 10 feature. Check your software version in Settings > General > About. If you’re on watchOS 10, try restarting your watch and iPhone.
Can I add widgets from any app? Only apps that support widgets (either the new WidgetKit or the older complication system) can appear in the Smart Stack. Most Apple apps work, and many third-party apps have added widget support. If an app doesn’t show up in the widget list, it doesn’t support widgets.
Does the Smart Stack drain battery faster? The Smart Stack itself uses negligible battery because widgets update only when needed. However, if you have many widgets from apps that refresh frequently (like weather or stock apps), you might see slightly reduced battery life. You can disable background refresh for specific apps in the Watch app settings.
How do I remove a widget from the Smart Stack? On the watch, press and hold the widget, then tap the minus icon. Or go to the Watch app on your iPhone, tap Smart Stack, and tap the minus next to the widget you want to remove.
Can I reorder widgets manually? Yes, but only if you turn off “Smart Ordering” in the Watch app. Once off, you can drag widgets in the list to set your preferred order. Pinned widgets always stay at the top, above unpinned ones.
