Battery Drains Fast Essential PH1? Fixes That Work

Card No. 06·27035 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The calculator on this card is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example shows how to do the sum by hand.

If your Essential PH-1 battery drains fast, the cause is usually a combination of background app activity, poor cellular signal, and an aging battery—not a single setting. You can often recover several hours of battery life by adjusting a few settings and identifying power-hungry apps, though a battery replacement may be needed if the phone is more than two years old.

Formula

The calculator above estimates the average current draw of your Essential PH-1 based on how long the screen is on, how long it sits in standby, and the battery capacity. The formula is:

Average current (mA) = Battery capacity (mAh) ÷ (Screen-on time + Standby time)

Then, estimated battery life is computed by dividing the capacity by that average current and scaling by the fraction of time the screen is on. Variables:

  • Screen-on time (t) – hours the display is actively on per day.
  • Standby time (d) – hours the phone is idle but powered on per day.
  • Battery capacity (c) – the PH-1’s rated capacity is 3040 mAh, but you can adjust if the battery has degraded.

Worked Example

Using the default values: 5 hours screen-on, 12 hours standby, 3040 mAh capacity.

  1. Total time = 5 + 12 = 17 hours.
  2. Average current = 3040 ÷ 17 ≈ 178.8 mA.
  3. Estimated battery life = (3040 ÷ 178.8) × (5 ÷ 17) ≈ 5.0 hours of screen-on time.

This matches the calculator’s output. If your actual screen-on time is lower, the average current is higher, meaning something is draining the battery faster than normal.

Why the Essential PH-1 Drains Faster Than It Used To

The Essential PH-1 launched in 2017 with a 3040 mAh battery. Lithium-ion batteries naturally degrade with charge cycles—after 500 full cycles, capacity typically drops to around 80%. If you’ve owned the phone for several years, the battery may simply hold less charge. But even with a healthy battery, Android’s background processes, location services, and poor signal can cause rapid drain. The PH-1’s stock Android was relatively clean, but later security updates and app updates may have increased power consumption.

First Fixes: Settings That Stop Fast Drain

Before replacing anything, try these settings changes—they address the most common causes of fast drain on the PH-1:

  • Check battery usage – Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Look for apps using more than 15% of battery when you haven’t used them much. Tap an app and select “Force stop” if it’s misbehaving.
  • Enable Adaptive Battery – Settings > Battery > Adaptive Battery. This limits background activity for apps you rarely use.
  • Turn off unnecessary location – Settings > Security & location > Location > App-level permissions. Set most apps to “While in use” instead of “All the time.”
  • Reduce screen brightness and timeout – Lower brightness to 40% or less, and set screen timeout to 30 seconds or 1 minute.
  • Disable Bluetooth and NFC when not needed – Quick settings toggles are fastest.
  • Check for signal issues – If you’re in a low-signal area, the phone boosts radio power, draining battery. Enable Wi-Fi calling if available.

Common Problem: Google Play Services and Background Data

Many PH-1 owners report that Google Play Services consumes a large share of battery. This is often due to sync loops or corrupted cache. Fixes:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps > Google Play Services.
  2. Tap “Storage & cache” and then “Clear cache” (not data).
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. If that doesn’t help, check for system updates under Settings > System > System updates.

Also, disable “Usage & diagnostics” under Settings > Privacy – this reduces background reporting.

When to Replace the Battery

If you’ve tried settings and still get less than 3 hours of screen-on time, the battery likely needs replacement. The PH-1’s battery is not user-removable; you need a repair shop or a DIY kit. Signs of a worn battery:

  • Phone shuts down at 20-30% battery.
  • Battery percentage jumps down suddenly.
  • Charging is very slow or stops at 80%.

Battery replacement cost varies, but it’s often cheaper than a new phone. If you do it yourself, follow a teardown guide and use a quality replacement battery. After replacement, calibrate by charging to 100% and using until 5% once.

Comparison: Essential PH-1 vs. Modern Phones

The PH-1’s 3040 mAh battery is small by modern standards—many current phones have 4000-5000 mAh. Also, the PH-1’s processor (Snapdragon 835) is less efficient than newer chips. Even with a new battery, you won’t get the endurance of a 2023 phone. However, the PH-1’s stock Android is lightweight, so it can still last a full day with moderate use if the battery is healthy.

Alternatives if the Phone Can’t Be Saved

If battery replacement isn’t worth it, consider:

  • Use a power bank – A 10,000 mAh power bank gives you 3 full charges.
  • Install a custom ROM – Some custom ROMs (like LineageOS) are more battery-efficient than the last official stock ROM. This requires unlocking the bootloader and may void warranty.
  • Replace the phone – If the PH-1 is your daily driver, a newer mid-range phone will have better battery life and security updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Essential PH-1 drain battery even when idle?

Idle drain is usually caused by background apps syncing, poor signal, or a failing battery. Check battery usage for apps running in the background, and try enabling Airplane mode overnight to see if drain drops. If it still drains 10% or more overnight, the battery is likely worn.

Does the Essential PH-1 support fast charging?

Yes, the PH-1 supports USB Power Delivery fast charging up to 27W. If your phone charges slowly, try a different USB-C cable and a Power Delivery charger. Avoid cheap cables that may not negotiate the correct voltage.

Will a factory reset help battery life?

Sometimes. A factory reset clears corrupted app data and background processes that may be draining battery. Back up your data first. After reset, restore apps from the Play Store, but avoid restoring system settings. If battery life improves, it was a software issue.

Is it safe to use the phone while charging?

Yes, but it generates heat. Heat accelerates battery degradation. If you notice the phone getting hot while charging, remove the case and avoid intensive tasks like gaming. For best battery health, keep the charge between 20% and 80%.

Can I replace the Essential PH-1 battery myself?

Yes, but it’s difficult. The back glass is fragile, and the battery is glued. You’ll need a heat gun, suction cup, and plastic picks. Follow a teardown guide. If you’re not experienced, a repair shop is safer.

Why does my PH-1 die at 30%?

This is a classic sign of battery degradation. The battery’s voltage drops under load, and the phone misreads it as empty. A battery replacement is the only reliable fix.
