Beats Studio Buds Not Charging: Case, Cable, Contacts

Card No. 06·23799 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

If your Beats Studio Buds aren’t charging, the problem is almost always one of three things: a dirty or blocked charging contact on the earbuds or case, a faulty or incompatible charging cable, or a case battery that has completely drained. This article walks you through each cause in order of likelihood, with step-by-step fixes you can try before considering a replacement.

How Beats Studio Buds Charging Works

The Beats Studio Buds (and the newer Studio Buds+) charge through two small metal pins on the inside of each earbud stem. These pins press against corresponding contacts in the charging case. The case itself has a built-in lithium-ion battery that recharges via a USB-C cable (or a wireless charging pad for the Studio Buds+ model).

There is no wireless charging in the original Studio Buds case—only the Studio Buds+ supports Qi wireless charging. When you place the earbuds in the case, the case’s battery transfers power to the buds through those physical contacts. If any of those contacts are dirty, oxidized, or not aligned, the charging circuit won’t complete, and the buds won’t charge even if the case has plenty of battery.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Work through these steps in order. Most charging issues are resolved by step 2 or 3.

  1. Check the case battery level. Open the case lid near your iPhone or Android device. The status light on the front of the case shows the case’s charge level: green means enough power, amber or red means low. If the light doesn’t turn on at all, the case battery may be completely dead—plug it in with a USB-C cable for at least 10 minutes before checking again.
  2. Clean the charging contacts. Use a dry, soft-bristled toothbrush or a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) to gently scrub the gold contacts on the earbuds and the corresponding pins inside the case. Dry completely before reinserting. This is the single most common fix.
  3. Try a different cable and power adapter. Use the USB-C cable that came with the buds, or any high-quality USB-C cable. Plug it into a wall adapter rated at 5W or higher (most phone chargers work). Avoid charging from a laptop’s USB port, which may provide too little current.
  4. Check the alignment. Place each earbud in its slot and press down gently until you feel it click. The buds should sit flush with the case. If they sit at an angle, the contacts may not connect.
  5. Reset the earbuds. If cleaning and cables don’t help, reset the buds: put them in the case, close the lid, wait 10 seconds, then open the lid and press and hold the button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the LED flashes red and white. This clears pairing and charging glitches.
  6. Check for debris in the case’s charging port. Use a toothpick or a can of compressed air to remove lint or dust from the USB-C port on the case. A blocked port can prevent the case itself from charging.

Why the Case Light Blinks or Stays Off

The status light on the front of the case gives you clues:

  • Green light – case battery is above ~30%.
  • Amber light – case battery is low, below ~30%.
  • Red light flashing – case battery is critically low; charge the case immediately.
  • No light when you open the lid – the case battery is completely drained, or the case itself is faulty. Plug it in and wait a few minutes.

If the light blinks white when you press the button on the back, that’s a pairing indicator, not a charging indicator. If the light stays off even after charging for 30 minutes with a known-good cable, the case battery may need service.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

Many users assume the earbuds are broken when they aren’t. Here are the most common misunderstandings:

  • “My earbuds won’t charge, so the buds are dead.” Usually the contacts are dirty or the case battery is low. Clean the contacts first.
  • “I can use any wireless charger.” Only the Studio Buds+ support Qi wireless charging. The original Studio Buds case has no wireless coil, so a wireless pad will do nothing.
  • “The case charges the buds instantly.” It takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge the buds from empty. A 5-minute charge gives about 1 hour of playback, but only if the case has enough battery itself.
  • “Fast charging works with any USB-C adapter.” The case draws whatever current the adapter provides; a 20W adapter won’t charge it faster than a 5W one because the case’s charging circuit limits the current.

When to Consider Battery Replacement or Repair

If you’ve cleaned the contacts, tried multiple cables, and reset the buds, but they still don’t charge, the internal battery in the case or the buds may have degraded. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time—typically after 300–500 full charge cycles. If your buds are more than two years old and hold charge for only a few minutes, the battery may be at the end of its life.

Apple (which owns Beats) does not offer user-replaceable batteries for the Studio Buds. You can contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider for a battery service. The cost varies by region and warranty status, but it’s often cheaper to buy a new pair than to pay for out-of-warranty battery replacement. If you’re handy, some third-party repair kits exist, but opening the case is difficult and risks damaging the electronics.

Prevention and Maintenance Tips

To avoid future charging issues:

  • Clean the contacts every 2–3 months with a dry toothbrush.
  • Keep the case away from moisture and extreme heat (e.g., don’t leave it in a hot car).
  • Don’t store the buds in the case with wet ears—sweat can seep into the contacts and cause corrosion.
  • If you won’t use the buds for a long period, store them at about 50% charge, not fully drained or fully charged.
  • Use the original cable or a certified USB-C cable to avoid power delivery issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is one earbud not charging while the other is fine?

This usually means the contact pins for that bud are dirty or misaligned. Clean both the bud’s contacts and the corresponding slot in the case. If that doesn’t work, try resetting the buds. If only one bud still doesn’t charge, the bud’s battery or charging circuit may be faulty.

How long does it take to fully charge the case?

With a 5W or higher USB-C adapter, the case takes about 1.5 hours to go from empty to full. The earbuds themselves take about 1.5 hours to charge inside the case. A 5-minute charge in the case gives about 1 hour of playback.

Can I charge the case wirelessly?

Only the Beats Studio Buds+ support wireless charging. The original Studio Buds case does not have a wireless coil, so it can only be charged via USB-C. Check your model: if the case has a small LED on the front and a USB-C port on the bottom, it’s the original.

Why does the case light flash red when I plug it in?

A red flashing light means the case battery is critically low. Leave it plugged in for at least 10 minutes; the light should turn amber or green as it charges. If it keeps flashing red for over 30 minutes, the case may need service.

My case shows green, but the buds still show low battery. What’s wrong?

This indicates the case has power, but the buds aren’t receiving it. Clean the contacts on both the buds and the case, and make sure the buds are seated properly. If that doesn’t work, reset the buds. If the problem persists, the buds’ charging pins may be damaged.

Is it safe to use a fast charger (e.g., 20W) with the case?

Yes. The case’s charging circuit regulates the current, so it won’t overcharge or damage the battery. It will charge at the same speed as a 5W charger because the case limits the input.
