Brother HL-L3295CDW Mac AirPrint: Print Only?

Card No. 06·38838 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The Brother HL-L3295CDW supports AirPrint on Mac, and AirPrint is print-only by design—it does not include scanning or faxing over the network. If you only need to print from a Mac, AirPrint works out of the box; if you also need to scan, you must install Brother’s full driver software.

What AirPrint Does and Doesn’t Do

AirPrint is Apple’s built-in printing protocol that lets Macs, iPhones, and iPads send print jobs to compatible printers without installing any drivers. On the HL-L3295CDW, AirPrint handles the same print functions as a wired connection: paper size, color mode (this is a monochrome printer, so grayscale only), duplex, and multiple pages per sheet.

AirPrint does not provide scanning, faxing, or printer status monitoring. The HL-L3295CDW is a multifunction printer (print, scan, copy, fax), but AirPrint only exposes the print service. For scanning, Brother requires its own software—either the full driver package or the Brother iPrint&Scan app for Mac.

How to Check If Your Mac Sees the Printer

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac (or connected via Ethernet, which also works with AirPrint).
  2. On your Mac, open System Settings (macOS Ventura or later) or System Preferences (earlier versions).
  3. Click Printers & Scanners.
  4. Click the + button. If the HL-L3295CDW appears in the list, AirPrint is already available—select it and click Add.
  5. If it doesn’t appear, check that the printer’s Wi-Fi is enabled (press the Wi-Fi button on the printer’s control panel) and that both devices are on the same network.

Once added, you can print from any Mac app via File > Print and choose the Brother printer. No further setup is needed for basic printing.

Why Scanning Requires Brother Software

AirPrint has no scan profile, so macOS cannot use it to pull a scan from the document feeder or flatbed. Brother provides two ways to scan on a Mac:

  • Brother iPrint&Scan – a free app downloadable from the Mac App Store or Brother’s website. It supports scan-to-file, scan-to-email, and OCR (text recognition).
  • Full Driver Package – includes the printer driver plus a scanner driver that appears in System Settings > Printers & Scanners. Once installed, you can use the built-in Image Capture app on macOS to scan.

If you only ever print, you can skip these. But if you later need to scan, you’ll have to install one of these—AirPrint won’t magically add scan capability.

Setting Up AirPrint on the HL-L3295CDW

The printer supports AirPrint out of the box, but it must be connected to your network. Here’s the typical setup:

  1. Power on the printer.
  2. On the printer’s touchscreen or control panel, go to Network > WLAN (or use the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on your router).
  3. Enter your Wi-Fi password using the printer’s keypad, or press the WPS button on the router and then the WPS button on the printer.
  4. Wait for the Wi-Fi indicator to show a solid connection.
  5. On your Mac, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners and add the printer as described above.

If you have a wired Ethernet connection, just plug in the cable and the printer will appear on the network automatically. AirPrint works over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • Printer not showing up in the list – Check that both devices are on the same subnet (e.g., both on the 2.4 GHz band). Some routers separate bands; try disabling “AP isolation or “client isolation in router settings.
  • Print job stuck in queue – Open Printers & Scanners, click the printer, then click Open Print Queue. Click the Resume button if paused, or delete the stuck job and resend.
  • AirPrint works but scan doesn’t – This is normal; AirPrint has no scan. Install Brother iPrint&Scan or the full driver.
  • Printer shows “Offline – Turn the printer off and on again, then check the Wi-Fi connection. Also try removing the printer from macOS and re-adding it.
  • Duplex printing not available – Make sure you select “Two-Sided in the print dialog. The HL-L3295CDW has automatic duplex, but the option must be enabled in the print settings.

AirPrint vs. Brother’s Full Driver

AirPrint is convenient because it requires no installation, but the full Brother driver offers more control:

  • Print settings – The full driver exposes advanced options like toner save mode, watermark, and custom paper sizes. AirPrint only shows basic settings.
  • Printer status – The full driver shows toner levels and error messages in the Mac’s print queue. AirPrint shows minimal status.
  • Scanning – Only the full driver or iPrint&Scan enables scanning.
  • Firmware updates – Brother’s software can update the printer’s firmware; AirPrint cannot.

For most home users, AirPrint is enough for printing. For office use or if you scan regularly, install the full driver package from Brother’s support site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HL-L3295CDW support AirPrint from a Mac?

Yes, it does. The printer is AirPrint-compatible, so any Mac on the same network can add it without installing drivers. Just go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners and click the + button.

Can I scan from a Mac using AirPrint?

No. AirPrint only handles printing. To scan, you need Brother’s iPrint&Scan app or the full driver package, which adds a scanner driver to macOS.

Why doesn’t my Mac see the printer even though it’s on?

Most likely the Mac and printer are on different Wi-Fi bands or the router has AP isolation enabled. Try connecting both to the 2.4 GHz band, or disable AP isolation in the router settings.

Do I need to install any software to print from a Mac?

No, not for printing. AirPrint is built into macOS, so you can add the printer and print immediately. Software is only needed for scanning or advanced print settings.

Can I use AirPrint over Ethernet?

Yes, AirPrint works over both Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet connections. As long as the Mac and printer are on the same network, AirPrint will work.

Will AirPrint work with macOS Sequoia or older versions?

Yes, AirPrint is supported on all recent macOS versions, including Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura, and older. The setup steps are the same, though the menu names differ slightly (System Preferences vs. System Settings).
