This walkthrough covers the “Paris Streets to the Fallen” segment in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA, also in the Advance Collection). You enter Paris Streets from the Chapel, fight through the area, and reach the Fallen, a mid-boss who guards the way to the Underground Reservoir. The key is to use the right souls and avoid the Fallen’s grab attack.

Formula

The calculator above is for pacing, not for the game. The formula for average pace is:

Pace = Finish Time / Distance

Where Finish Time is in minutes and Distance is in kilometers. The result is your pace in minutes per kilometer. The speed is Distance / (Time in hours), giving km/h.

Worked Example

Using the defaults: 50 minutes, 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 / 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 / (50/60) = 10 / 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

The calculator shows 5.00 min/km and 12.00 km/h.

Paris Streets Layout and Enemies

Paris Streets is a small, vertical area in Aria of Sorrow. You enter from the Chapel at the top-left. The area has two screens. The first screen has a few Flea Men and a Bone Pillar. The second screen has a save room on the left and the door to the Fallen’s arena on the right. There is also a hidden room above the save room containing a Magic Seal (useful for the boss).

Enemies here:

  • Flea Man – jumps around, weak to slashing. Drops the Flea Man soul (jump boost).
  • Bone Pillar – stationary, throws bones. Drops the Bone Pillar soul (bone attack).
  • Zombie – slow, easy. Drops the Zombie soul (poison touch).

You can farm the Flea Man soul here for a double-jump-like ability, but it’s not required.

How to Reach the Fallen

  1. From the Chapel, go right and down through the door at the bottom-right.
  2. In Paris Streets, head right. You’ll see the first screen with Flea Men.
  3. Go right to the second screen. You’ll see a save room on the left (use it).
  4. Go right to the door. Enter it to trigger the Fallen boss fight.

Before the fight, equip the Skeleton Blaze soul (if you have it) or the Mandragora soul for extra damage. Also, make sure you have at least 5 potions.

Fallen Boss Strategy

The Fallen is a large, winged demon that floats and dives at you. It has two main attacks:

  • Grab – it swoops down and grabs you, draining HP. You can break free by pressing buttons rapidly.
  • Fireball – it spits a fireball that travels across the floor.

Strategy:

  1. Stay on the ground and wait for it to dive. When it dives, slide (down + jump) to avoid the grab.
  2. After it misses, it will be vulnerable for a moment. Attack with your whip or a strong weapon.
  3. Use the Flame Demon soul (if you have it) to hit it from a distance.
  4. When it spits fireballs, jump over them.

It takes about 20 hits with a standard weapon. The Fallen drops the Fallen soul, which gives you a projectile attack.

Common Mistakes and Tips

  • Not using the save room – always save before the boss. If you die, you’ll respawn at the last save.
  • Trying to tank hits – the Fallen’s grab does heavy damage. Avoid it at all costs.
  • Forgetting to equip souls – the Red Minotaur soul (if you have it) gives a strength boost. Equip it for this fight.
  • Not bringing potions – carry at least 3 high potions.

Also, note that the Fallen is weak to holy attacks. If you have the Holy Water sub-weapon, use it.

After the Fallen

After defeating the Fallen, you’ll get the Fallen soul and access to the Underground Reservoir. Go right and down to the next area. The Underground Reservoir has new enemies like the Merman and the Killer Fish. You’ll also find the Merman soul (swim) which is essential for progression.

In the Reservoir, you’ll eventually face the boss, the Giant Bat. That’s a separate fight, but the Fallen is the immediate gatekeeper.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I break free from the Fallen’s grab?

Mash the attack and jump buttons rapidly. You’ll break free after about 2 seconds. The grab does damage per second, so break out quickly.

What level should I be for the Fallen?

Level 15-18 is comfortable. If you’re below 15, grind on the Flea Men and Zombies in Paris Streets for a few levels.

Where is the save room in Paris Streets?

It’s on the second screen, on the left side. There’s also a hidden room above it with a Magic Seal.

Can I skip the Fallen?

No, the Fallen is mandatory. You need its soul to progress, and the door behind it opens to the Underground Reservoir.

What is the best soul to use against the Fallen?

The Flame Demon soul (if you have it) is great for ranged damage. The Skeleton Blaze also works well. If you don’t have those, use the Mandragora soul for a powerful scream.

Why does the Fallen keep hitting me with fireballs?

Fireballs travel along the ground. Jump over them, or use the slide move to go under them if you’re close.
