Clear Origin Cache: How to Do It & Why

Card No. 06·53219 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Clearing the Origin cache fixes many common issues like games not launching, store pages showing outdated info, or downloads getting stuck. You can clear the cache directly from the Origin application’s settings menu, and the process takes less than a minute. This article explains exactly how to do it, what the cache does, and what to expect after clearing it.

What Is the Origin Cache?

Origin, like most modern applications, stores temporary files on your computer to speed up repeated tasks. These files include thumbnails of your game library, user interface elements, and fragments of game data that help the client load faster. Over time, these cached files can become corrupted or outdated, leading to glitches, slow performance, or errors when trying to download or launch games.

The cache is not the same as your game saves or installed games. Clearing it will not delete your games, progress, or screenshots. It only removes temporary files that Origin can easily recreate the next time you start it.

How to Clear the Origin Cache (Windows)

Follow these steps to clear the cache on a Windows PC. The process is the same for both the standard Origin client and the newer EA app, though the menu names may differ slightly.

  1. Fully close Origin. Make sure it is not running in the system tray (the icons near the clock). Right-click the Origin icon in the tray and select Exit if it is there.
  2. Open the Start menu and type Run (or press Windows + R).
  3. Type %ProgramData%/Origin into the Run dialog and press Enter. This opens a folder containing Origin’s shared data.
  4. Delete the contents of this folder, but do not delete the folder itself. You can select all files (Ctrl+A) and press Delete, or right-click and choose Delete.
  5. Repeat the same step for the folder %AppData%/Origin. Type this into the Run dialog and delete the contents.
  6. Also clear the folder %AppData%/Origin/DownloadCache if it exists. This is where partial downloads are stored.
  7. Restart your computer, then launch Origin again. It will rebuild the cache files automatically.

If you are using the newer EA app, the paths are slightly different: %ProgramData%/Electronic Arts/EA Services and %AppData%/Electronic Arts/EA Desktop. The same principle applies—delete the contents, not the folders.

How to Clear the Origin Cache (Mac)

On macOS, the cache is stored in the hidden Library folder. Here is how to clear it:

  1. Quit Origin completely (Cmd+Q).
  2. Open Finder and press Cmd + Shift + G to open the “Go to Folder” dialog.
  3. Type ~/Library/Application Support/Origin and press Enter.
  4. Delete the contents of this folder (but not the folder itself).
  5. Also check ~/Library/Caches/Origin and delete its contents.
  6. Restart your Mac and relaunch Origin.

If you cannot see the Library folder, it may be hidden. The “Go to Folder” shortcut will still work even if it is hidden.

What Does Clearing the Cache Actually Fix?

Here are the most common problems that clearing the Origin cache resolves:

  • Games not launching or crashing on startup. Corrupted cached game files can interfere with the launch process.
  • Store page not loading or showing old prices. The client may be displaying cached versions of web content.
  • Download stuck at 0% or error messages during download. A corrupted download cache can cause this.
  • UI glitches, missing images, or blank panels. The interface relies on cached images that may become corrupt.
  • Login issues or “Origin is already running” errors. A stale cache can sometimes cause these.

If you are experiencing any of these, clearing the cache is a safe first step before reinstalling the client or contacting support.

What Clearing the Cache Does NOT Do

It is important to understand the limits of this action. Clearing the cache will not:

  • Delete your installed games or game saves.
  • Remove your account information or game library.
  • Reset your settings or preferences.
  • Uninstall Origin or the EA app.
  • Fix issues caused by your internet connection, firewall, or antivirus software.

If the problem persists after clearing the cache, the cause is likely elsewhere—for example, a network issue, outdated drivers, or a conflict with other software.

Common Misconceptions About the Origin Cache

One common myth is that clearing the cache will speed up your computer or free up significant disk space. In reality, the cache is usually small (a few dozen megabytes at most). It is not a substitute for cleaning up your hard drive.

Another misconception is that you need to delete the entire Origin folder, not just its contents. Deleting the folder itself can break the installation and force you to reinstall the client. Always delete the contents of the folder, not the folder.

Some users also believe that clearing the cache will reset their password or log them out. It does not. You will remain logged in, and your game library will still be there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clearing the cache delete my games?

No. The cache only contains temporary files like thumbnails and download fragments. Your installed games and save files are stored in a separate location (usually Program Files or Documents) and are not affected.

How often should I clear the Origin cache?

There is no set schedule. Only clear it when you experience issues like those listed above. Clearing it unnecessarily is harmless but also pointless.

I cleared the cache, but my game still won’t launch. What now?

Try repairing the game. In Origin, right-click the game cover and select Repair. This checks the game files for corruption and replaces any missing or damaged files. If that fails, try reinstalling the game or contacting EA support.

Does clearing the cache work for the EA app?

Yes, the EA app (the replacement for Origin) has the same cache system. The steps are nearly identical, just with different folder names. In the EA app, you can also go to Settings > App > Clear cache to do it automatically.

Is it safe to delete the cache while Origin is running?

No. If Origin is running, it may be using the files you are trying to delete, which can cause errors or make the cache rebuild improperly. Always close Origin completely before clearing the cache.
