Color correction and color grading are two distinct steps in video post-production: color correction fixes technical issues with exposure, white balance, and contrast to make the image look natural and accurate, while color grading is a creative process that applies a specific look, mood, or style to the footage. In short, correction is about making the image “correct,” and grading is about making it “expressive.” This article explains the difference in detail, how each process works, and when to use them.

Formula

The calculator above computes your average running pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:

  • Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
  • Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Where:

  • t = finish time in minutes (e.g., 50)
  • d = distance in kilometers (e.g., 10)
  • Pace is the number of minutes it takes to run one kilometer.
  • Speed is the number of kilometers you cover in one hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

So a 50-minute 10 km run gives an average pace of 5:00 per kilometer and an average speed of 12 km/h.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this calculator to plan race times, check your training pace, or compare performances across different distances. For example, if you run a 5 km in 25 minutes, your pace is 5:00 min/km and speed is 12 km/h. If you want to know what time you would get for a 10 km at that same pace, multiply the pace by the distance: 5 min/km × 10 km = 50 minutes.

How to Read the Result

The pace result is shown in minutes per kilometer (min/km). A lower pace means faster running. For example, 4:30 min/km is faster than 5:00 min/km. The speed result is in kilometers per hour (km/h). A higher speed means faster running. For US customary units, you can convert: 1 km = 0.621371 miles. To get pace in min/mile, multiply the min/km value by 1.60934. To get speed in mph, multiply km/h by 0.621371.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing units: If you enter distance in miles but the calculator expects kilometers, the result will be wrong. Always convert to km first (miles × 1.60934).
  • Using seconds instead of minutes: If your finish time is 50 minutes and 30 seconds, enter 50.5 minutes, not 50.30.
  • Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimal places during intermediate steps to avoid rounding errors in the final pace.

Limitations of the Formula

This calculator assumes a constant pace throughout the run. In reality, pace varies due to terrain, weather, and fatigue. The result is an average, not a prediction of your ability to hold that pace for a different distance. For race prediction, more complex models (like Riegel’s formula) account for fatigue, but they are beyond the scope of this simple average-pace calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert pace from min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km becomes 5 × 1.60934 = 8:03 min/mile.

Can I use this for walking or cycling?

Yes, the formula works for any activity where you know the time and distance. Just enter the total time and distance for that activity.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

A comfortable conversational pace for a beginner might be around 6:30 to 7:30 min/km (10:30 to 12:00 min/mile). This varies by age, fitness, and gender.

Why is my speed in km/h different from what my treadmill shows?

Treadmills often display speed in km/h or mph, but they may not be calibrated perfectly. Also, if you run outdoors, GPS inaccuracies can affect distance measurement, which changes the calculated speed.

How do I calculate pace for a marathon (42.195 km)?

Just enter the total finish time in minutes and the distance 42.195 km. The calculator will give you the average pace per km.
