To connect Beats headphones to a Mac, put the headphones in pairing mode and select them from the Bluetooth menu in System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS). The exact steps differ slightly depending on whether you have Apple-series Beats (like Powerbeats Pro or Beats Fit Pro) or older models, but the process takes under a minute once you know where to click.
Formula
The calculator works out your average pace and speed from a finish time and distance. Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance (here, minutes per kilometer), and speed is the distance covered per hour.
Pace = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
Speed = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Variables:
• t = finish time in minutes
• d = distance in kilometers
• Pace is in minutes per kilometer (min/km)
• Speed is in kilometers per hour (km/h)
Worked Example
Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.
Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So with a 50-minute 10K, your average pace is 5:00 per kilometer and your average speed is 12.0 km/h.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this whenever you have a total time and distance and want to know your average pace or speed. Runners often use it after a training run to see if they held a target pace. Cyclists and walkers can use it too, as long as you measure distance and time in the same units.
You can also work backward: if you know your target pace and distance, you can estimate a finish time. But this calculator only takes time and distance as inputs, so for that you would rearrange the formula yourself.
How to Read the Results
The first result, pace, is the headline number. A lower pace means faster running. For example, 4:30 min/km is faster than 5:00 min/km. Speed is the same information expressed differently: 13.3 km/h is faster than 12.0 km/h.
Pace in minutes per kilometer is common in most of the world. In the US, many runners use minutes per mile. To convert, multiply the pace in min/km by 1.609. So 5:00 min/km is about 8:03 per mile.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing units: If you enter distance in miles but time in minutes, the pace will be in minutes per mile, not minutes per kilometer. The calculator assumes kilometers.
- Using seconds: If you enter a time like 50:30 as 50.5, that is correct. But if you enter 50.30 thinking it means 50 minutes 30 seconds, you get a slightly wrong result. Convert seconds to decimal minutes first (30 seconds = 0.5 minutes).
- Rounding too early: Keep the full decimal during the calculation and round only the final result. Rounding the speed before dividing can shift the pace by a few seconds.
Limitations of the Formula
This is an average pace over the whole distance. It does not account for hills, stops, or uneven effort. If you run intervals, your actual pace at any moment may be very different from the average.
The formula also assumes you measure time and distance accurately. GPS watches and phone apps can have small errors, especially in urban areas with tall buildings. For a precise training log, use a certified course or a measured track.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert pace from min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace in minutes per kilometer by 1.609 to get minutes per mile. For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.609 = 8:03 per mile. Or divide your speed in km/h by 1.609 to get miles per hour.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on age, fitness, and experience. A recreational runner might do a 10K at 6:00–7:00 min/km, while a competitive runner might be under 4:00 min/km. Compare your pace to your own previous runs rather than to others.
Can I use this for cycling?
Yes, the math is the same. Enter your total ride time and distance, and you get your average speed. Many cyclists think in km/h, so the speed output is directly useful.
Why does my GPS watch show a different pace?
GPS watches calculate pace in real time using short intervals, which can fluctuate with signal accuracy. This calculator gives the average over the whole distance, which is more stable. Also, watches often include pauses or auto-pause, changing the total time.
