This calculator converts a volume in millilitres into grams for a chosen kitchen ingredient. Pick the ingredient, enter the millilitres and you get grams, ounces and the volume in US cups.
Formula
Grams = millilitres × density (g/mL). Water is 1 g/mL; other ingredients are lighter or heavier. Typical densities: milk 1.03, vegetable oil 0.92, honey 1.42, granulated sugar about 0.85 and spooned all-purpose flour about 0.53 g/mL. 1 oz = 28.3495 g and 1 US cup = 236.588 mL.
- v: volume in millilitres
- density: grams per millilitre of the ingredient
Worked Example
250 mL of water.
- Grams = 250 × 1 = 250.0 g
- Ounces = 250 ÷ 28.3495 = 8.82 oz
- Cups = 250 ÷ 236.588 = 1.06 US cups
Limits and common mistakes
- Powders vary with packing: scooped flour can weigh 20-30% more than spooned flour, so a scale is the reliable way for baking.
- Brown sugar packed into the cup is heavier than granulated (about 0.93 g/mL).
- Temperature changes density only slightly for kitchen use.
