Crimson Desert Dormant Roars Quest Walkthrough

Card No. 06·9768 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The “Dormant Roars” quest in Crimson Desert tasks you with tracking down and awakening three dormant ancient creatures scattered across the eastern highlands, and this walkthrough covers every step from first trigger to final reward. You’ll need to find the three sealed beast lairs, solve each one’s environmental puzzle, and defeat the awakened guardian to complete the questline.

Quest Overview and How to Start

Dormant Roars becomes available after you complete the main story chapter “The Whispering Sands” and reach character level 25 or higher. To start it, travel to the town of Kamasylve and speak with the elder NPC named Orwen, who stands near the central fountain. He will mention strange rumblings coming from the eastern mountain range and give you the quest marker. If you don’t see the quest icon, make sure you’ve progressed far enough in the main storyline and have unlocked the eastern highlands region on your map.

Locating the Three Dormant Beast Lairs

Once you accept the quest, your map will show three distinct markers, each representing a lair. These are not marked with traditional quest icons; instead, they appear as small, pulsing orange circles. The three lairs are:

  • Northern Lair – Located inside a frozen cave at the base of Mount Valtarra. The entrance is hidden behind a waterfall, so look for a narrow path leading up the cliff face.
  • Eastern Lair – Found in the scorched desert ruins east of the Sunken Oasis. The entrance is a collapsed archway that you must clear with a bomb or explosive barrel.
  • Southern Lair – Situated in a swampy grove south of the Murkwater Fen. The entrance is a large, hollow tree trunk that requires you to light three braziers nearby to open.

Each lair is guarded by a mini-boss that must be defeated before you can enter. These guards are level 28-30 and have moderate health pools, so come prepared with potions and decent gear.

Solving the Environmental Puzzles Inside Each Lair

Inside each lair, you’ll find a central chamber with a large, glowing crystal. To awaken the dormant beast, you must solve a unique puzzle that activates the crystal. The puzzles are as follows:

  • Northern Lair (Frozen Cave): You must melt three ice pillars by using a fire-based skill or throwing a torch at them. Once melted, the crystal becomes active.
  • Eastern Lair (Desert Ruins): You must align four rotating mirrors to reflect a beam of light onto the crystal. The mirrors are on pedestals around the room; interact with them to rotate them 90 degrees. The correct alignment is: front-left mirror faces right, front-right faces left, back-left faces forward, back-right faces backward.
  • Southern Lair (Swamp Grove): You must activate three pressure plates in the correct order. The order is indicated by symbols on the floor: a leaf, a droplet, and a claw. Step on them in that exact sequence.

If you fail a puzzle, the crystal resets and you may need to wait a few seconds before trying again. There is no fail penalty, but enemies may respawn.

Defeating the Awakened Guardians

Once the crystal is activated, a short cutscene plays and the dormant beast awakens. Each guardian has a distinct attack pattern and weakness:

  • Frost Golem (Northern): Weak to fire. It slams the ground creating ice spikes, and it throws ice boulders. Dodge the spikes and use fire attacks to stagger it.
  • Sand Wyrm (Eastern): Weak to lightning. It burrows underground and emerges under you, causing a shockwave. Keep moving and use lightning skills when it surfaces.
  • Swamp Troll (Southern): Weak to poison. It has a powerful melee combo and can spit acid. Stay at mid-range and use poison DoT skills to whittle it down.

Each guardian has roughly 15,000 HP and takes about 3-5 minutes to defeat with average gear. After defeating each one, you’ll receive a “Beast Core” item and a portion of the quest reward.

Returning to Orwen and Final Rewards

After collecting all three Beast Cores, return to Orwen in Kamasylve. He will ask you to place the cores on a pedestal near the fountain, which triggers a final cutscene. The quest completes and you receive the following rewards:

  • 12,000 experience points
  • 3,500 gold
  • Unique accessory: “Seal of the Ancient Beast” (grants +5% critical hit chance)
  • Unlocks the “Beast Tamer” side quest chain

The quest also permanently unlocks fast travel to the three lair entrances, which is useful for farming rare materials later.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting

Many players get stuck on the mirror puzzle in the Eastern Lair. If the light beam isn’t reaching the crystal, double-check that you haven’t accidentally rotated a mirror twice. Also, ensure you’re standing on the center platform when the beam hits; sometimes the game doesn’t register the activation if you’re too close to the mirrors. Another common issue is the Southern Lair pressure plates not responding. This usually happens if you step on them too quickly; wait one second between each plate.

If a guardian doesn’t spawn after solving the puzzle, leave the lair and re-enter. The game may have a minor glitch that prevents the cutscene from triggering. Reloading the area usually fixes it.

Tips for Under-Leveled Players

If you attempt this quest before level 25, the guardians will be significantly stronger and may one-shot you. It’s recommended to be at least level 28 with gear around item level 120. Stock up on health potions and bring a companion if the game allows it. Also, consider upgrading your weapon to at least +5 before attempting the guardians, as their HP pools are substantial.

For the Frost Golem, using a fire enchantment on your weapon will dramatically speed up the fight. For the Sand Wyrm, equip boots with increased movement speed to dodge its burrow attack more easily. For the Swamp Troll, bring antidotes to counter the poison effect it applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do the three lairs in any order? Yes, the quest markers are independent and you can tackle them in any sequence. However, the guardians scale slightly with your level, so it’s best to do the Northern Lair first if you’re on the lower end of the recommended level.

What happens if I fail the puzzle? The puzzle resets and you can try again immediately. There is no penalty, but enemies may respawn in the room, so be prepared to fight them again.

Is the quest repeatable? No, Dormant Roars is a one-time quest. However, after completion, you can revisit the lairs to fight the guardians again for rare drops, but they won’t drop Beast Cores.

Do I need to be a specific class to solve the puzzles? No, all puzzles can be solved with any class. For the fire-based puzzle, you can use a torch item if you don’t have fire skills. For the mirror puzzle, you only need to interact with the mirrors.

What is the recommended level and gear for this quest? The quest is designed for level 25+, but level 28-30 with gear around item level 120 is comfortable. If you’re struggling, level up a bit and upgrade your weapon.

Can I get help from other players? Yes, the quest is not instanced, so you can party up with friends. However, each player needs to interact with the puzzle elements themselves to progress their own quest.
