Crimson Desert mounts are rideable creatures and vehicles that let you travel faster across the open world, carry goods, and in some cases fight alongside you. You unlock the first mount early in the story, then acquire more by purchasing, taming, or completing quests. This guide covers every mount type, how to get them, upgrade options, and practical tips for using them.
Formula
The calculator works out your average speed and pace from the time you spent travelling and the distance you covered. The formulas are:
- Average speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ (time (min) ÷ 60)
- Average pace (min/km) = time (min) ÷ distance (km)
Where t is the travel time in minutes and d is the distance in kilometres. If you use miles and minutes, the speed comes out in mph and the pace in min/mile – the math is the same.
Worked Example
Using the default values: you ride for 30 minutes and cover 10 km.
- Convert time to hours: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5 hours
- Speed = 10 ÷ 0.5 = 20 km/h
- Pace = 30 ÷ 10 = 3.0 min/km
The calculator shows an average speed of 20.00 km/h and a pace of 3.00 min/km.
Mount Types in Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert features several mount categories, each with different strengths:
- Horses – the standard all-rounder. Good speed, decent stamina, and can be upgraded with gear.
- Donkeys – slower but carry more weight. Useful for hauling trade goods or resources.
- Camels – excel in desert terrain, with better stamina and reduced speed penalty on sand.
- Elephants – heavy combat mounts that can trample enemies and have high HP.
- Wolves and other beasts – faster and more agile, often used for combat or stealth approaches.
Some mounts are purely cosmetic, while others have unique combat skills or passive bonuses.
How to Acquire Mounts
There are four main ways to get a mount:
- Story quests – the first horse is given during the main questline, usually in the opening region.
- Purchase – stable masters in towns sell horses and sometimes camels for in-game currency.
- Taming – wild horses can be lured, calmed, and then claimed. This requires a lasso and some patience.
- Breeding – you can breed two owned horses to produce a foal with better stats, but this is a late-game feature.
Rare mounts like elephants or special beasts are often rewards from side quests, world bosses, or exploration.
Mount Stats and Upgrades
Every mount has four core stats:
- Speed – base travel speed, usually in km/h.
- Stamina – how long the mount can sprint before needing to rest.
- Weight limit – how much cargo it can carry without slowing down.
- Health – how much damage it can take in combat.
You can improve these with:
- Saddles and stirrups – reduce stamina drain and increase speed.
- Barding (armor) – increases health and defense.
- Bags – increase weight limit.
- Skill training – unlock new abilities like drifting, jumping, or a combat attack.
Upgrades are purchased from stable masters or crafted from materials found in the world.
Using Mounts in Combat
Some mounts can fight. While mounted, you can use your own weapons, but certain mounts have special attacks:
- Elephants can charge and knock down groups of enemies.
- Wolves can bite and pounce on single targets.
- Horses can rear-kick to stagger enemies behind you.
Combat on horseback is riskier – if your mount takes too much damage, it can throw you off. You can dismount quickly with a button press, and the mount will usually run to safety.
Common Problems and Misconceptions
One frequent question is: “Can you fast travel with a mount? – No, fast travel is separate. You cannot call your mount to you after fast travelling; you need to return to a stable or find a wild one.
Another misconception is that all horses are the same. In reality, horse tier (1 to 5) affects base speed and stamina. A tier 5 horse can be significantly faster than a tier 1, even with the same gear.
Also, mounts can die permanently in some game modes. Always check the difficulty setting – on higher difficulties, you may want to avoid combat on your main horse.
Tips for Choosing the Right Mount
Think about what you do most:
- Exploration – go for a fast horse with high stamina, like a tier 4 or 5.
- Trading – use a donkey or camel with large bags.
- Combat – pick an elephant or wolf with high health and attack skills.
- Mixed use – a decent horse with balanced stats works for most of the game.
You can own multiple mounts and switch at any stable. It’s often worth having a fast horse and a cargo mount.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tame any wild horse?
Most wild horses can be tamed, but higher-tier horses are rarer and harder to calm. You need a lasso and to approach slowly. If the horse runs, stop and wait – chasing it will scare it away.
Do mounts need food or water?
No, mounts do not have hunger or thirst mechanics. They only have stamina that regenerates when you stop sprinting.
Can you ride mounts in towns?
Yes, you can ride in most towns, but some areas are too narrow or have guards that will stop you. In cities, you may be forced to dismount near important buildings.
How do you increase mount stamina?
Stamina is increased by leveling up the mount (via riding) and by equipping better stirrups. The maximum stamina is also tied to the mount’s tier.
Are there flying mounts?
No, there are no flying mounts in the base game. The developers have not announced any, so don’t expect to soar over cliffs – you’ll need to climb or go around.
