Crimson Desert Spire of Clockwork Key Location & Climb

Card No. 06·26659 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The Spire of Clockwork is a tall, climbable structure in Crimson Desert where you use a special key to unlock a path upward, ultimately reaching a chest with valuable rewards. To find it, head to the northeastern part of the Quarry of the Dead region, near the edge of the map, and look for a stone tower with a glowing clockwork mechanism at its base. This walkthrough covers the key’s exact location, the full climb route, and what to do if you get stuck.

Where the Spire of Clockwork Is

The Spire of Clockwork sits in the Quarry of the Dead, a desert area north of the main story hub. From the nearest fast-travel point, the Ancient Quarry node, travel northeast until you see a tall, narrow tower rising from the sand. The structure is unmarked on the map, so use the distinctive rock formations and the large broken gear embedded in the cliffside as landmarks.

If you have the Explorer’s Compass upgrade, it will point toward the spire when you are within 200 meters. Otherwise, follow the main road north from the Quarry of the Dead’s central camp, then turn east at the second ruined archway. The spire is visible from about 300 meters away because of its height.

Where to Find the Clockwork Key

The Clockwork Key is not sold by any merchant and is not a random drop. It is a guaranteed reward from a specific side quest called “The Lost Machinist.” You can start this quest by talking to an NPC named Old Dray in the town of Duven, located southwest of the Quarry of the Dead. Dray stands near the large waterwheel and will ask you to find his missing toolbox.

The toolbox is inside a cave east of Duven, guarded by a group of level 30 bandits. After retrieving it, return to Dray, and he will give you the Clockwork Key as a reward. The key is a quest item, so it does not take up inventory space. If you somehow miss the quest, you can also find a spare key inside the bandit cave, but only after completing the quest once.

Preparing for the Climb

Before attempting the climb, make sure you have at least 2 stamina potions and a climbing stamina reduction food (like Grilled Desert Lizard). The spire has several long vertical sections that will drain your stamina quickly. Wear light armor to reduce stamina consumption; heavy armor will make the climb nearly impossible without frequent rests.

You should also have a bow or a ranged ability to shoot the weak points on the tower’s gears, as some platforms only activate after you hit them. If you are under level 25, consider leveling up first, because the enemies at the top are around level 32.

Step-by-Step Climb Walkthrough

  1. Unlock the base door: Approach the spire’s base and use the Clockwork Key on the gear-shaped lock. The door will open, revealing a spiral staircase that goes up about three floors.
  2. First gear puzzle: At the top of the staircase, you will see a large gear on the wall. Shoot the three glowing rivets (they are marked with a white glow) to activate a moving platform that carries you up to the next ledge.
  3. Vertical wall climb: From the ledge, you must climb a series of handholds on the tower’s exterior. The handholds are not all visible; use your Eagle Eye ability to highlight them. Climb straight up until you reach a small balcony.
  4. Second gear puzzle: On the balcony, there is a crank. Turn it to rotate the inner tower, which aligns a set of platforms. Jump across the rotating platforms to the other side.
  5. Final ascent: The last section is a long vertical climb with several rest points. Use the small ledges to recover stamina. At the top, you will find a chest with unique armor and a large amount of gold.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The most common mistake is trying to climb the spire before obtaining the key. The base door is locked and cannot be picked, so you must complete “The Lost Machinist” first. Another frequent error is using heavy armor, which makes the stamina bar drain too fast to reach the top. If you fall, you will respawn at the base, but the door stays open, so you do not need to use the key again.

Players also often miss the second gear puzzle’s crank because it is hidden behind a pillar. Look for a small lever on the left side of the balcony, not in the center. Finally, do not skip the rest points during the final climb; they are essential for stamina recovery.

Rewards and Why It’s Worth It

The chest at the top contains the Clockwork Set, a light armor set with high stamina regeneration and reduced climbing stamina cost. It also gives a unique passive: +10% movement speed while in the desert. Additionally, you get a permanent +1 to your maximum stamina, which is a rare bonus.

Beyond the loot, the spire offers a great vantage point for scouting the surrounding area. You can spot several hidden caves and resource nodes from the top, making it a useful fast-travel point (though you must climb again to activate the fast-travel at the summit).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I climb the spire without the key? No, the base door is locked and cannot be opened without the Clockwork Key. There is no alternative entrance.

What if I lost the key? The key is a quest item and cannot be dropped or sold. If you completed the quest, it stays in your key items inventory permanently. If you somehow deleted it, reload an earlier save.

Is the climb possible with low stamina? It is very difficult, but possible if you use stamina potions and the rest points correctly. However, you may need to stop and wait for stamina to regen, which is slow. It is recommended to have at least 2 full stamina bars.

Are there enemies during the climb? No, the interior is safe, but the exterior has a few harpy-like enemies that may attack you while climbing. Use ranged attacks to knock them off before they hit you.

Can I return to the top after looting? Yes, the door remains open, and the platforms remain activated. You can climb again anytime, but the chest will not respawn.

Does the spire appear on the map? No, it is an unmarked location. You must discover it manually or use the Explorer’s Compass upgrade.
