This guide ranks the best cursed blades in the game by overall power, then breaks down the optimal skills, races, and accessories to pair with them. You’ll get a clear tier list, build recommendations, and answers to common questions about how cursed weapons actually work.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average damage per second (DPS) from a cursed blade build. The formula is:

DPS = Total Damage Dealt ÷ (Total Attack Time in minutes × 60)

Where:

  • Total Attack Time (min) – how long you were actively attacking, in minutes.
  • Total Damage Dealt – the sum of all damage numbers you saw during that time.
  • DPS – your average damage per second, the standard measure of a build’s output.

This is the same math the game uses on its stat screen, so you can check your build’s real performance without guessing.

Worked Example

Using the default values: you attacked for 10 minutes and dealt 50,000 total damage.

  1. Convert minutes to seconds: 10 × 60 = 600 seconds.
  2. Divide damage by seconds: 50,000 ÷ 600 = 83.33 DPS.

The calculator shows 83.33 DPS, matching the manual calculation.

How Cursed Blades Work

Cursed blades are a weapon class that trades a permanent debuff (usually health drain, reduced defense, or slower stamina regen) for significantly higher base damage and unique on-hit effects. Unlike normal weapons, they can’t be enchanted with standard damage gems; instead, they scale with a hidden “curse level” that increases as you land hits. Most cursed blades also have a special ability that triggers when your HP drops below 30%, giving a temporary damage boost or lifesteal.

The key mechanic is the curse meter. Every hit fills it slightly; when full, the blade enters “Overdrive” for 10 seconds, doubling its damage and adding a bleed effect. However, Overdrive also doubles the health drain, so you need a way to sustain yourself.

Cursed Blade Tier List

This tier list ranks the best cursed blades for endgame PvE and PvP, based on raw damage, utility, and how well they synergize with the recommended build below.

  • S-Tier: Void Reaper – highest base damage, fast attack speed, and a built-in teleport on dash attacks. The curse drain is harsh, but the DPS ceiling is unmatched.
  • A-Tier: Blood Moon Fang – lifesteal on every hit, making it the safest cursed blade. Slightly lower damage than Void Reaper, but you rarely need healing items.
  • B-Tier: Shadow’s Edge – balanced stats with a defensive curse (reduced defense) instead of health drain. Good for beginners, but outclassed by the top two.
  • C-Tier: Grave Walker – slow, heavy, and deals bonus damage to enemies below 20% HP. Situational; only use in boss fights with long execution phases.

For most players, Blood Moon Fang is the best overall choice because the lifesteal offsets the curse, letting you stay in Overdrive longer.

Best Skills for Cursed Blades

Your skill tree matters as much as the blade itself. These are the must-have skills for any cursed blade build:

  • Blood Aegis (Defense tree) – converts 20% of the health you drain into a temporary shield. This is the single best skill for cursed blades because it turns your biggest weakness into a defensive tool.
  • Executioner’s Mark (Assassin tree) – increases damage by 15% against enemies affected by bleed. Since most cursed blades apply bleed in Overdrive, this is a constant damage boost.
  • Second Wind (Survival tree) – when your HP would drop to zero, you instead survive at 1 HP and gain 5 seconds of invulnerability. Cooldown: 3 minutes. This is your panic button.
  • Ruthless (Warrior tree) – +10% attack speed when below 50% HP. Cursed blades naturally keep you low, so this is almost always active.

Avoid skills that increase stamina costs or reduce healing received; they directly contradict the curse mechanic.

Best Races for Cursed Blades

Race choice changes your base stats and gives you a racial ability. Three races stand out for cursed blade users:

  • Vampir – innate 10% lifesteal on all melee attacks, stacking with Blood Moon Fang’s effect. This is the meta choice for sustain.
  • Half-Fiend – +15% damage when below 50% HP, and a racial ability that removes all debuffs (including the curse drain) for 10 seconds. Excellent for burst phases.
  • Human – +20% experience gain and a flat +5% damage bonus. The XP boost helps you level skills faster, making it a strong early-game pick.

If you’re playing solo, Vampir is almost mandatory. In a group with a dedicated healer, Half-Fiend gives higher damage output.

Best Accessories for Cursed Blades

Accessories can mitigate the curse or amplify your damage. Here are the top five, in order of priority:

  1. Amulet of the Leech – +8% lifesteal. This stacks with racial and blade lifesteal, often pushing you past 30% total sustain.
  2. Ring of the Damned – +20% damage while your curse meter is over half full. Since you’ll almost always be above half, this is a permanent 20% boost.
  3. Cloak of Shadows – reduces the health drain from cursed blades by 50%. Simple, effective, and lets you stay in Overdrive for longer.
  4. Boots of the Swift – +15% movement speed. Kiting is essential when your HP is draining, and these let you create distance to heal.
  5. Belt of Vitality – +200 max HP. A larger health pool gives you more buffer against the drain, especially in Overdrive.

Do not use accessories that reduce healing received or increase damage taken; they will kill you faster than the curse itself.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Most players fail with cursed blades because of a few recurring errors:

  • Ignoring the curse meter – you should always know when Overdrive is about to trigger. If you’re at 20% HP and the meter is almost full, back off and let it reset.
  • Using heavy armor – heavy armor reduces your dodge and slows stamina regen, making it harder to survive the health drain. Medium or light armor is better.
  • Not carrying health potions – even with lifesteal, you need a few potions for emergencies. Always keep at least 5.
  • Overusing the dash attack – the dash attack on Void Reaper is powerful but costs extra HP. Use it only to close gaps or dodge, not as your main damage.

The most common misconception is that cursed blades are “glass cannon” weapons. In reality, with the right lifesteal and shield skills, they can out-tank most other builds because the constant damage keeps your shield up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cursed blades work in PvP? Yes, but they’re riskier. The health drain makes you vulnerable to burst damage, and players will focus you when they see your HP dropping. Use Blood Moon Fang and the Cloak of Shadows to survive.

Can I remove the curse from a cursed blade? No, the curse is permanent. However, some blacksmiths can “purify” the blade, which removes the curse but also removes the damage bonus. Not recommended.

What’s the best cursed blade for a beginner? Shadow’s Edge is the most forgiving because its curse only reduces defense, not HP. Once you’re comfortable with the mechanics, switch to Blood Moon Fang.

How do I get more cursed blades? They drop from the Cursed Knight boss in the Forsaken Crypt (around level 40) and from the weekly “Crimson Eclipse” event. You can also craft them at the Forge of Sorrows with 10 Cursed Shards.

Is the Void Reaper worth the health cost? For speedrunners and high-skill players, yes. The teleport on dash attacks is a massive mobility tool, and the damage is the highest in the game. For most players, Blood Moon Fang is better because you won’t die as often.
