Delete Amazon Voice Recordings: Steps and Settings

Card No. 06·50351 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Yes. You can delete Amazon Alexa voice recordings in the Alexa app or through Amazon’s Alexa Privacy settings, either one at a time or in larger batches. You can also change how long future recordings are kept, but deleting recordings does not necessarily erase every other kind of data associated with your account or smart-home devices.

What Alexa voice recordings are

When an Echo device or another Alexa-enabled device detects its wake word, it sends a request to Amazon’s cloud service to process the command. Amazon may save an audio recording of that interaction along with a text transcript and related information, such as the time and device involved. The transcript is not the same thing as the audio recording, even though both can appear in Alexa activity history.

Alexa does not continuously upload all the sound in a room as a record of ordinary conversation. A device listens locally for its wake word, but it can sometimes mistake a sound for that word and activate unexpectedly. If that happens, the Alexa app’s activity history can help you identify and delete the interaction.

Voice recordings are used to provide Alexa’s response and may also be used to improve speech recognition and related services, depending on your settings. Amazon’s menus and available controls can change, so if a label differs on your device, look for the Alexa Privacy or Review Voice History controls in the current Alexa app or on Amazon’s website.

Delete recordings in the Alexa app

Menu wording can vary by app version and region. A common route is to open the Alexa app and use these steps:

  1. Tap More, then open Settings.
  2. Tap Alexa Privacy.
  3. Choose Review Voice History.
  4. Use the date range or other available filters to find the recordings you want.
  5. Open a recording or select the available deletion control, then confirm.

Depending on the app’s current layout, you may see an option to delete a single recording, recordings from a particular period, or all recordings. Review the date range and confirmation message carefully before choosing a broad deletion option. If you cannot find the history screen in the app, sign in to your Amazon account in a browser and look under Alexa Privacy or Manage Your Alexa Data.

Delete by voice or use a browser

For a quick deletion, you can ask an Alexa device to delete what you said. Voice deletion must be enabled in Alexa Privacy settings before the device will accept commands such as “delete what I just said” or “delete everything I said today.” The exact supported commands and behavior may depend on your account settings and location. Check the confirmation Alexa gives, and use the app or website if you need to inspect specific recordings.

Amazon’s Alexa Privacy page in a web browser offers another way to review and manage voice history. Sign in to the Amazon account associated with the device, open the Alexa privacy controls, and choose the voice-history review or data-management option. This is useful when you are away from your Echo, or when app menus are difficult to navigate.

Deleting through one of these controls is different from simply removing a device from the Alexa app. Deregistering or unplugging an Echo does not, by itself, delete recordings already associated with the account.

Set recordings to delete automatically

If you do not want to return to the history page to remove recordings, set an automatic retention period. In Alexa Privacy settings, look for the control for managing or automatically deleting voice recordings. Depending on the options currently offered to your account, you may be able to choose a retention period or choose not to save recordings for future voice requests.

Automatic deletion applies going forward according to the setting you select; it may not remove older history immediately. Review and delete existing recordings separately if you want them removed. Also note that opting out of saving audio is not necessarily the same as disabling Alexa, preventing all processing of a request, or removing every transcript or piece of service data.

What deletion does—and does not—remove

Deleting a voice recording removes it from the Alexa voice-history controls, but it is best not to treat that as a universal “erase everything” command. Your Alexa account can contain other information, including device settings, routines, shopping or communication activity, and smart-home history held by connected services. Those items may have separate controls and retention rules.

Similarly, deleting the audio does not automatically delete an entry from every connected service or another person’s account. If a smart-home device, music service, or household profile has its own activity history, check that provider’s privacy controls as well. Amazon’s privacy notices explain how data is handled and whether limited retention may be required for operational or legal reasons.

A common misconception is that muting an Echo deletes its old recordings. The microphone-off button generally prevents the device from listening for the wake word while muted; it does not erase saved history. To remove earlier recordings, use the history deletion controls.

When Alexa records the wrong thing

If Alexa responds to a conversation that was not meant as a command, open Review Voice History and inspect the relevant time. The app may display a transcript or an indication that Alexa thought it heard a wake word. Delete the item if you do not want it retained.

To reduce accidental activations, consider changing the device’s wake word in its settings, moving it away from televisions or speakers that say similar words, or using the microphone-off button when you do not want voice activation. These measures reduce the chance of an unintended request, but they do not replace deleting recordings already stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete all my Alexa voice recordings at once?
Often, yes. Open Alexa Privacy and Review Voice History in the app or your Amazon account, then look for the option to delete all available voice history. Read the date range and confirmation prompt before proceeding.

Can I delete Alexa recordings without the app?
Yes. You can use Alexa Privacy controls in a web browser after signing in to the associated Amazon account. If you enabled voice deletion, you can also ask an Alexa device to delete supported recent recordings.

Does deleting recordings turn off Alexa?
No. Deleting history removes saved recordings through the privacy controls; it does not disable the assistant. To stop a device from responding to its wake word, use its microphone-off button or change its settings.

Does muting my Echo delete previous recordings?
No. Muting generally stops the device from listening for the wake word while the microphone is off. Delete existing history separately in Alexa Privacy settings.

Why can I still see Alexa activity after deleting audio?
Some activity entries or related account data may be managed separately from voice recordings. Check the history’s details and Amazon’s data controls; connected services may also keep their own records.
