Delete Bookmarks Mac: How to Remove Them

Card No. 06·20455 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

If you want to delete bookmarks on a Mac, the method depends on the browser you use, but in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox you can delete a single bookmark, a folder, or all bookmarks at once. This guide covers the exact steps for each major browser, how to manage bookmarks from the Bookmarks menu, and how to fix common issues like a bookmark that won’t delete.

Why Delete Bookmarks on a Mac?

Bookmarks accumulate over time. You save a page for a project, forget to remove it, and months later your bookmark bar is a cluttered list of dead links, outdated articles, and pages you no longer visit. Deleting bookmarks keeps your browser fast (a huge bookmark library can slow down autocomplete), makes it easier to find what you actually need, and removes broken or malicious links that could redirect you to unsafe sites. It also cleans up your sync data if you use iCloud or a browser account, freeing a tiny bit of storage and making your bookmarks consistent across devices.

How to Delete a Single Bookmark in Safari

Safari is the default browser on macOS, and deleting a bookmark is straightforward. The exact menu names have changed slightly across macOS versions, but the core steps are the same in recent releases (macOS Ventura and later).

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click the Bookmarks menu in the top menu bar, then choose Edit Bookmarks (or press Command+Option+B). This opens the Bookmarks sidebar.
  3. In the sidebar, navigate to the folder that contains the bookmark. You can expand folders by clicking the disclosure triangle.
  4. Right-click (or Control-click) the bookmark you want to remove, then select Delete. Alternatively, select the bookmark and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  5. The bookmark is removed immediately. There is no undo for this action, so be sure before you delete.

If you want to delete a bookmark directly from the bookmark bar, right-click the bookmark icon on the bar and choose Delete. This works for bookmarks you’ve placed on the Favorites bar.

How to Delete Bookmarks in Chrome and Firefox

Chrome and Firefox use a similar bookmark manager, but the entry points differ slightly.

Chrome

  1. Open Chrome. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, hover over Bookmarks, then click Bookmark manager (or press Command+Option+B).
  2. In the manager, you’ll see a sidebar with folders. Click a folder to see its contents.
  3. Right-click the bookmark you want to delete and choose Delete. You can also select multiple bookmarks by holding Command while clicking, then right-click and delete them all at once.
  4. Press Command+Shift+Delete to clear browsing data, but that does not delete bookmarks—it only clears history and cache. To delete all bookmarks, you need to select all (Command+A) and delete.

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox. Click the library icon (looks like a small bookshelf) in the toolbar, or press Command+Shift+O to open the Library window.
  2. On the left, click Bookmarks to see all your folders.
  3. Right-click a bookmark and choose Delete. To delete a folder, right-click the folder and choose Delete Folder.
  4. Firefox also has a Bookmarks Toolbar where you can right-click a bookmark and delete it directly.

How to Delete All Bookmarks at Once

If you want a clean slate, you can delete every bookmark in your browser. This is useful if you’re switching browsers, starting fresh, or your bookmark list has become corrupted.

  • Safari: In the Bookmarks sidebar, click the top-level folder (usually called Bookmarks or Favorites), press Command+A to select everything, then press Delete. This removes all bookmarks, including those in subfolders.
  • Chrome: In the Bookmark manager, click the Bookmarks bar folder in the sidebar, press Command+A, then press Delete. Repeat for the Other bookmarks folder. You cannot delete the built-in Bookmarks bar or Other bookmarks folders themselves, but you can empty them.
  • Firefox: In the Library window, click Bookmarks in the left sidebar, then click Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar. Press Command+A and then Delete. Repeat for each folder.

Note that deleting all bookmarks is permanent and cannot be undone. If you think you might want them back, export your bookmarks first (see the next section).

How to Back Up Bookmarks Before Deleting

Before you mass-delete, it’s wise to export your bookmarks to an HTML file. This way you can restore them later if you change your mind.

  • Safari: Go to File > Export Bookmarks. Choose a location and save the .html file.
  • Chrome: Open the Bookmark manager, click the three-dot menu at the top, and choose Export bookmarks. Save the .html file.
  • Firefox: In the Library window, click Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML. Save the file.

To restore, use the corresponding Import option in the same menu. This is also a good way to transfer bookmarks to another browser.

Common Problems and Fixes

Bookmark won’t delete

Sometimes a bookmark appears stuck. This usually happens because the bookmark is part of a synced set (iCloud, Google account, Firefox account). If you delete it on your Mac, it may reappear after syncing. To fix this, turn off bookmark syncing temporarily, delete the bookmark, then turn syncing back on. In Safari, go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud and uncheck Bookmarks. In Chrome, go to Settings > Sync and Google services, and turn off sync. In Firefox, go to Settings > Sync and turn off sync.

Deleted bookmark reappears

This is the same sync issue. If you delete a bookmark on your Mac but it comes back, it’s because another device (or the cloud) still has it. Delete it on the other device, or turn off sync temporarily as described above.

Can’t find the bookmark to delete

If you can’t locate a bookmark, use the search feature in the bookmark manager. In Safari, the sidebar has a search field at the bottom. In Chrome, the bookmark manager has a search box at the top. In Firefox, the Library window has a search box on the right. Type part of the URL or title to find it.

Accidentally deleted a bookmark

There is no built-in undo for bookmark deletion in any major browser. However, if you exported your bookmarks before deleting, you can import them again. If you didn’t export, you might be able to restore from a Time Machine backup of your entire system, but that’s tedious. The best practice is to export before any mass deletion.

Alternatives to Deleting Bookmarks

If you’re hesitant to delete bookmarks permanently, consider these alternatives:

  • Move them to a folder like “Old” or “Archive” so they’re out of the way but still accessible.
  • Use reading list (Safari) or a similar feature to save pages temporarily without cluttering your bookmarks.
  • Use a bookmark manager extension that lets you tag and organize bookmarks more flexibly.
  • Use a cloud-based bookmark service like Pocket or Raindrop.io to store links outside your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does deleting a bookmark on my Mac delete it on my iPhone?

If you have iCloud Bookmarks enabled (Safari) or are signed into the same browser account (Chrome, Firefox), deleting a bookmark on your Mac will sync the deletion to your other devices. If you don’t have sync enabled, the bookmark will remain on other devices.

How do I delete a bookmark folder in Safari?

In the Bookmarks sidebar, right-click the folder and choose Delete. This removes the folder and all bookmarks inside it. You cannot delete the built-in Favorites folder, but you can delete custom folders.

What is the keyboard shortcut to delete a bookmark?

In Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, after selecting a bookmark in the bookmark manager, press the Delete key on your keyboard. There is no single shortcut that deletes a bookmark without selecting it first.

Can I recover a deleted bookmark?

If you have a Time Machine backup, you can restore your entire browser’s bookmark file from a previous backup. However, this is complex and may affect other browser data. The easiest recovery is to import a previously exported HTML file.

Why do my bookmarks keep coming back after I delete them?

This is almost always due to sync. Another device or the cloud service is restoring the bookmark. Turn off sync, delete the bookmark, then turn sync back on. Also check that you don’t have multiple browser profiles that are syncing the same bookmarks.
