Delete Checked Items in Google Keep? How-To

Card No. 06·15374 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Google Keep does not have a single button that deletes all checked items at once. You can only remove checked items one by one, either by deleting the entire note or by clearing each checkbox individually. This article explains exactly how to do both, what happens to your data, and how to keep your lists clean.

What “Checked Items Means in Google Keep

Google Keep’s checklist feature lets you create a list of items, each with a checkbox. When you tap or click a checkbox, the item gets a strikethrough and moves to the bottom of the list (in most views). These are the “checked items. Keep does not have a “clear completed option like some other to-do apps (e.g., Todoist, Microsoft To Do). The only ways to remove them are manual deletion or deleting the whole note.

How to Delete a Single Checked Item (Mobile App)

On the Android or iOS app, you can remove a checked item without deleting the entire note. The steps are the same for both platforms:

  1. Open the note that contains the checklist.
  2. Tap the checkbox next to the item you want to delete (if it isn’t already checked).
  3. Tap the trash can icon that appears at the bottom of the note (or in the top-right corner, depending on your version).
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the item.

Note: This deletes the entire note, not just the item. There is no way to delete a single item from a checklist in the mobile app. If you only want to remove one item, you must edit the note and remove the text manually—but that still leaves the checkbox. The only true way to remove a single checked item is to delete the whole note and recreate it without that item.

How to Delete a Single Checked Item (Web/Desktop)

On the Google Keep web version (keep.google.com), the process is similar:

  1. Click on the note with the checklist.
  2. Hover over the checked item you want to remove.
  3. Click the trash can icon that appears on the right side of that item.

This deletes only that item, not the whole note. This is the only place where you can delete a single checklist item. The web version also lets you uncheck an item (click the checkbox again) if you change your mind.

How to Delete All Checked Items at Once

There is no built-in “clear completed button in Google Keep. If you have many checked items and want to remove them all, you have two options:

  • Delete the whole note – This removes the entire checklist, including unchecked items. If you want to keep the unchecked items, copy them somewhere first.
  • Manually delete each item – On the web version, you can click the trash icon on each checked item one by one. This is tedious but preserves the unchecked items.

If you regularly need to clear completed items, consider using a different app that supports “clear completed (see Alternatives below).

What Happens When You Delete an Item or Note?

When you delete a single item from a checklist (web only), it is gone immediately—there is no undo. When you delete an entire note, it goes to the “Trash in Google Keep. You can restore it within 7 days by going to the menu (three horizontal lines) and selecting “Trash. After 7 days, it is permanently deleted. Deleting a note does not delete other notes.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

Many users look for a “delete checked items button and think it exists because other apps have it. It does not. Another common issue: on mobile, tapping the trash icon on a note deletes the whole note, not just the checked item—users often lose unchecked items this way. Also, checking an item does not delete it; it just moves it to the bottom. If you want to hide completed items, you cannot—Keep always shows them.

Alternatives with “Clear Completed

If you need to delete all checked items in one tap, try these apps:

  • Google Tasks – Has a “Clear completedâ€ button in the app and web.
  • Microsoft To Do – Offers “Clear completedâ€ in the menu.
  • Todoist – Lets you filter completed tasks and delete them in bulk.

These apps also sync across devices and integrate with other services, but they lack Keep’s note-taking features (labels, colors, drawings).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete all checked items in Google Keep at once?

No, Google Keep does not have a “clear completed feature. You can only delete items one by one (web) or delete the entire note.

Why is there no “delete checked items button in Google Keep?

Google Keep is designed as a simple note-taking app, not a full task manager. The developers have not added bulk actions for checklists. You can suggest the feature through Google’s feedback option in the app.

Does checking an item delete it?

No, checking an item only marks it as done and moves it to the bottom of the list. It does not delete it.

How do I delete a single item from a checklist on my phone?

You cannot delete a single item from a checklist in the mobile app. You must use the web version (keep.google.com) on a computer, where you can hover over the item and click the trash icon.

Can I recover a deleted checklist item?

If you delete a single item on the web, it is gone permanently—there is no undo. If you delete an entire note, it goes to Trash and can be restored within 7 days.

Is there a way to hide checked items without deleting them?

No, Google Keep always shows checked items. You can uncheck them if you want them to appear in the normal list again.
