Diablo 4 Aspects: How to Use & Extract Them

Card No. 06·8001 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To use an Aspect in Diablo 4, you imprint it onto a piece of Legendary or Rare gear at the Occultist, which transfers the Aspect’s power to that item. You obtain Aspects by extracting them from Legendary drops or by completing specific dungeons for the Codex of Power. This guide explains the full process, the difference between the two sources, and how to manage your Aspects effectively.

What Are Aspects in Diablo 4?

Aspects are the core of Diablo 4’s Legendary item system. Each Aspect is a unique, named power that modifies a skill or provides a new effect. For example, the Aspect of the Umbral restores resource when you crowd-control an enemy, while Edgemaster’s Aspect increases damage based on available primary resource. Every Legendary item you find has one Aspect embedded in it, and its power is tied to that specific drop.

You cannot craft Aspects from scratch. Instead, you either extract them from a Legendary item (destroying the item in the process) or unlock them permanently in your Codex of Power by completing a specific dungeon. The Codex version is always at the lowest possible roll, while extracted Aspects retain the roll from the item they came from.

How to Extract and Imprint Aspects

To extract an Aspect from a Legendary item, visit the Occultist in any major town (e.g., Kyovashad, Cerrigar). Choose the “Extract Aspect” option, select the item, and pay the gold cost. The item is destroyed, and the Aspect is added to your inventory as a consumable. You can then imprint it onto another item at the Occultist.

To imprint, select “Imprint Aspect,” choose the target item (it must be Rare or Legendary, and not already have an Aspect), then choose the Aspect from your inventory. The target item becomes Legendary and gains the Aspect’s power. The imprinting cost depends on the item’s slot and rarity. If you imprint over an existing Aspect, the old one is overwritten and lost.

Codex of Power vs. Extracted Aspects

The Codex of Power is a permanent collection of Aspects you unlock by completing dungeons. Each dungeon rewards a specific Aspect for a specific class (or a general one). Once unlocked, you can imprint that Aspect as many times as you want, for a gold cost, without consuming any item. The trade-off: Codex Aspects always roll at the minimum value.

Extracted Aspects, on the other hand, retain the roll from the item you extracted. A Legendary drop with a high roll (e.g., +30% damage) will give you an Aspect with that same high value. This makes extracted Aspects far more powerful for endgame builds, but they are one-time use. You can store them in your stash, but they are not permanent.

How to Choose Which Aspects to Use

Choosing the right Aspect depends on your build and the slot you’re imprinting on. Here are the key factors:

  • Slot restrictions: Each Aspect can only be imprinted on specific gear slots (e.g., helmet, gloves, weapon). Check the tooltip on the Aspect to see where it can go.
  • Build synergy: Pick Aspects that amplify your main skills. For a Barbarian whirlwind build, you want Aspects that increase whirlwind damage or fury generation.
  • Roll priority: For offensive Aspects, a high roll is often worth more than a perfect item base. For defensive Aspects, the base armor/resistance matters more.
  • Codex for filler, extracted for key slots: Use Codex Aspects for slots you’re likely to replace soon, and save high-rolled extracted Aspects for your final gear.

Common Problems and Mistakes

One of the most common mistakes is imprinting an Aspect onto a low-level item, wasting a high roll. Since you can’t extract an Aspect twice, once it’s on an item, it’s stuck there (unless you overwrite it). Another mistake is not checking slot restrictions—you might have a great Aspect but no suitable gear slot.

Also, be aware that imprinting on a Legendary item replaces its existing Aspect. If you have a Legendary with a good Aspect and you imprint a different one, the original is lost forever. Plan your upgrades carefully.

Finally, don’t forget that the Occultist’s extraction cost scales with item level and rarity. Extracting a high-level Ancestral item costs more gold, but the Aspect roll is usually worth it.

Comparing Aspects: Codex vs. Extracted in Practice

For a practical comparison, consider the Aspect of the Protector (damage reduction when you deal damage). The Codex version gives a fixed 10% reduction. An extracted version from a high-level drop could give 25%. If you’re pushing high Nightmare Dungeons, that 15% difference is significant. However, the Codex version is free to re-use, so you can put it on every new piece of gear as you level.

In the endgame, most builds rely on a mix: a few key Aspects with high rolls from extraction, and the rest filled with Codex versions. This is because finding a perfectly rolled Aspect for every slot is extremely rare.

Costs and Resource Management

Extracting and imprinting costs gold, and the price increases with item level and rarity. At level 60, extracting an Ancestral Legendary can cost around 50,000 gold, and imprinting on an Ancestral item similar. This can drain your gold quickly if you’re constantly swapping Aspects.

To manage costs, only extract Aspects you know you’ll use. If you find a Legendary with a low roll of a common Aspect, it’s often better to salvage it for materials. Also, remember that the Codex is free after the initial dungeon unlock, so use it for experimental builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you extract an Aspect from an item you already imprinted?

No. Once an Aspect is imprinted onto an item, it becomes that item’s Aspect. You can overwrite it with a different Aspect, but you cannot extract it again. The only way to get an Aspect back is to find another item with it.

Do Aspects stack if you have the same one on two items?

No, Aspects do not stack. If you have the same Aspect on two different items, only the highest roll applies. It’s generally a waste to put the same Aspect on multiple slots.

Can you put an Aspect on a Unique item?

No. Unique items have fixed, unchangeable powers and cannot have Aspects imprinted on them. They also cannot be extracted.

Are Codex Aspects always the lowest roll?

Yes. The Codex of Power always gives the minimum possible roll for that Aspect. To get higher rolls, you must extract from Legendary drops.

What happens to the Aspect when you salvage a Legendary item?

Salvaging a Legendary item destroys it and gives you crafting materials, but you do not get the Aspect. You must use the Occultist’s “Extract Aspect” option to keep the Aspect.
