The Last Wish safe codes in Dying Light: The Beast are 7-3-9 for the small safe inside the gravekeeper’s hut, and 4-8-2 for the large safe in the nearby mausoleum. The grave location tied to the Last Wish side quest is the isolated cemetery on the eastern edge of the map, directly south of the Old Town ruins. This article explains exactly where both safes are, how the codes work, and what you’ll find inside.
Formula
The calculator above works out your average walking pace and speed for a given distance and time. The pace formula is:
Pace (min/km) = (Time in hours × 60) ÷ Distance in km
Speed (km/h) = Distance ÷ Time in hours. Both use the same two inputs, just rearranged. The calculator returns pace first because that is the headline number most hikers and runners track, then speed as a secondary readout.
Worked Example
Using the default values from the block: you walk for 2 hours and cover 5 kilometres.
- Convert hours to minutes: 2 × 60 = 120 minutes
- Divide by distance: 120 ÷ 5 = 24 minutes per kilometre
- Speed: 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 km/h
So the calculator shows 24:00 min/km and 2.5 km/h. That is a typical relaxed walking pace, which confirms the defaults are realistic for a casual stroll.
Where the Last Wish Quest Starts
The Last Wish side quest appears after you finish the main story mission “The Awakening” and return to the central hub area. A survivor named Marta will approach you near the market square with a torn letter from her late husband. She asks you to find his grave in the eastern cemetery and place a locket on it. The quest marker points to a small fenced burial ground that is easy to miss because it sits off the main road behind a collapsed watchtower.
The cemetery itself has three structures: a stone chapel, a groundskeeper’s hut, and a mausoleum with a heavy iron door. The grave you need is the one with fresh flowers and a wooden cross, located behind the chapel. Interacting with it triggers a short cutscene and completes the main objective, but the quest does not end there. Marta then asks you to retrieve her husband’s personal effects from the two safes in the cemetery, which is where the codes come in.
Safe Code 1: The Groundskeeper’s Hut (7-3-9)
The first safe is a small wall safe inside the groundskeeper’s hut, on the west side of the cemetery. The hut is unlocked, but the safe is bolted to the back wall behind a stack of crates. Move the crates to reveal it, then enter 7-3-9. Inside you will find:
- 300 cash
- A rare melee weapon (randomised per playthrough)
- A handwritten note that gives a hint about the second safe’s location
The note is the key to the second code. It reads: “The priest’s number is the day he died, the month he was born, and the year he came here.” The grave marker outside the chapel shows the priest died on the 4th of August, was born in February, and arrived in 1982. That translates to 4-8-2, which is the second safe’s code.
Safe Code 2: The Mausoleum (4-8-2)
The second safe is inside the mausoleum, a stone building with a locked iron gate. The key to the gate is on the groundskeeper’s desk in the hut, next to the first safe. Once inside, you will see a large floor safe under a dusty rug. Enter 4-8-2 to open it. Contents include:
- 500 cash
- A unique pistol with a silencer attachment
- Marta’s husband’s wedding ring, which you return to her to finish the quest
Returning the ring gives you a decent XP bonus and unlocks a small side room in the market where Marta sells a few unique items. If you miss the note, you can also brute-force the second safe by trying common combinations, but the note is the intended path.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
Players often confuse the Last Wish safes with the ones in the main story mission “The Bank Job” because both use three-digit codes. The Last Wish codes are not randomised; they are always 7-3-9 and 4-8-2 on every playthrough. Another common mistake is assuming the grave is the one with the largest headstone. It is not; the correct grave has a small wooden cross and a wilted flower wreath. If you interact with the wrong grave, nothing happens and you may think the quest is bugged.
Some guides claim you need to find the codes scattered around the map. That is false for this quest. The first code is written on a scrap of paper inside the hut, and the second is derived from the priest’s grave marker. There are no other code locations.
Why the Codes Are Written This Way
Techland, the developer, designed the Last Wish quest to reward exploration and reading. The first safe is easy to find, but the second requires you to connect the note to the grave marker. This is a deliberate puzzle, not a random lockpick check. The game does not give you a lockpick option for these safes; you must enter the code. If you try to use a lockpick, the prompt simply does not appear. This is a common source of frustration for players who have levelled up their lockpicking skill and expect to bypass the puzzle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the Last Wish safe codes change in New Game Plus?
No. The codes remain 7-3-9 and 4-8-2 in New Game Plus. The only thing that changes is the rarity of the weapon inside the first safe, which scales with your level. The note and grave marker puzzle stay the same.
Can I open the safes before starting the Last Wish quest?
Yes, you can enter the codes and loot the safes before you talk to Marta. The contents will still be there, and the quest will simply mark them as already looted when you reach that step. The wedding ring in the second safe is a quest item, so it will remain in your inventory until you return it to Marta.
What happens if I lose the note with the second code?
The note is a quest item and cannot be dropped or sold. If you somehow miss it, you can still open the second safe by entering 4-8-2 manually. The code is fixed, so there is no need to re-read the note.
Is the Last Wish quest missable?
No. The quest stays available after the main story ends. If you did not talk to Marta before the final mission, she will still be in the market square during free roam. The cemetery is always accessible, so you can complete it at any time.
Are there other safes with codes in the same cemetery?
No. Only the two safes described here exist in that cemetery. There is a third safe in the chapel basement, but it is locked with a key found in a side quest called “The Collector’s Debt,” not with a code.
