Edit Delete Segment Strava: How To

Card No. 06·43886 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To edit or delete a segment on Strava, you must be the segment’s creator and use the Strava website (not the mobile app). Go to your segment’s page, click the gear icon, and choose “Edit” or “Delete Segment” to make changes or permanently remove it.

Background: What Strava Segments Are

Segments are user-created stretches of road or trail (e.g., a 2 km climb or a 400 m sprint) that Strava automatically times athletes on whenever they pass through. Anyone can create a segment from their own activity, and other athletes can then compete for the fastest time on that exact stretch. Segments are central to Strava’s social and competitive features, and they appear on both the website and mobile app.

Because segments are user-generated, there will be times when you need to clean them up. Common reasons include: the segment has a wrong start or end point, the name is misspelled or offensive, the segment overlaps another one, or you simply no longer want it public. Strava gives the creator tools to edit or delete their own segments, but the process is not always obvious.

How to Edit a Segment You Created

Editing is only possible on the Strava website. The mobile app does not offer segment editing or deletion. Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to strava.com on a desktop or laptop browser.
  2. Click on your profile picture (top right) and select “Segments” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Find the segment you want to edit and click its name to open its page.
  4. Look for the gear icon (⚙️) near the top right of the segment page. Click it.
  5. Choose “Edit” from the menu. You can now change the segment’s name, description, and privacy settings (public, followers-only, or private).
  6. To change the start or end point, you must use the “Crop” tool. This is only available if the segment was created from a single activity. Click “Crop” and drag the handles on the map to adjust the segment’s start and finish.
  7. Click “Save” when you are done.

Note: You cannot change the actual route of a segment beyond cropping the start and end from the original activity. If you need a different path, you must delete the segment and create a new one.

How to Delete a Segment You Created

Deleting is permanent and cannot be undone. All leaderboard data, comments, and achievements associated with the segment will be removed. Here is how:

  1. Navigate to the segment’s page on the Strava website (as above).
  2. Click the gear icon.
  3. Select “Delete Segment”.
  4. Confirm the deletion in the pop-up window.

If you do not see the gear icon, you are not the creator, or the segment is not owned by you. In that case, you cannot edit or delete it directly.

What to Do If the “Edit” Option Is Missing

There are a few reasons you might not see the edit or delete options:

  • You are not the creator. Only the person who created the segment can edit or delete it.
  • You are on the mobile app. Editing and deletion are not available on iOS or Android. Use a web browser.
  • The segment was auto-generated. Strava sometimes creates “Suggested Segments” from popular routes. These are owned by Strava, not you, and cannot be edited or deleted by users.
  • You are viewing a segment that is part of a club or challenge. Those may have different permissions.

If you believe a segment you did not create is incorrect or violates Strava’s guidelines, you can report it. On the segment page, click the flag icon or “Report” link (if available) to flag it for review by Strava’s moderation team.

Common Problems and Workarounds

Here are typical issues and how to handle them:

  • Segment is too short or too long. If you want to change the length, use the crop tool to adjust the start and end points. You cannot extend a segment beyond the original activity’s route.
  • Segment has the wrong name. Editing the name is straightforward via the gear icon. There is no limit on how many times you can change it.
  • Segment is private but you want it public. Change the privacy setting in the edit menu. Note that changing privacy may affect who can see the segment and its leaderboard.
  • You want to delete a segment but the option is grayed out. This can happen if the segment is part of a challenge or if your account has restrictions. Try logging out and back in, or contact Strava support.
  • You accidentally deleted a segment. There is no undo. You will need to recreate it from the original activity. If you no longer have the activity, the segment is gone permanently.

Alternatives to Editing or Deleting

If you do not want to delete a segment but also do not want it to appear on your profile, you can:

  • Hide the segment from your profile. On the segment page, click the gear icon and choose “Hide from my profile” (if available). This removes it from your public profile but keeps it active for others.
  • Make the segment private. This limits visibility to you and your followers, but it will still exist.
  • Report the segment. If it is not yours and violates rules (e.g., unsafe, duplicate, or inappropriate), report it to Strava.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit or delete a segment from the Strava mobile app?

No. As of now, the mobile app (iOS and Android) does not support editing or deleting segments. You must use the Strava website on a computer or mobile browser (switch to “Desktop Site” if needed).

Why can’t I see the edit or delete option on my segment?

Most likely you are not the creator of that segment. Only the creator has the gear icon with edit/delete options. If you are the creator but still don’t see it, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser.

Can I change the start or end point of a segment?

Yes, but only if the segment was created from a single activity and you are the creator. Use the “Crop” tool on the edit page to drag the start and end markers. You cannot change the route in between.

What happens to leaderboard times when I delete a segment?

All leaderboard data, including times, efforts, and comments, is permanently deleted. There is no way to recover it.

Can I delete a segment that someone else created?

No. Only the creator can delete a segment. If you think the segment violates Strava’s terms, you can report it using the flag icon on the segment page.

How do I report a segment that is inappropriate or inaccurate?

On the segment page, look for a flag icon or a “Report” link. Click it and follow the prompts to explain the issue. Strava’s moderation team will review it.
