Elden Ring See Invisible Enemies? How to Spot Them

Card No. 06·43850 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Yes, Elden Ring has several enemies that turn invisible, and you can reveal them using specific items, spells, or by watching for visual cues. The most common are the Invisible Assassins in the Consecrated Snowfield and certain spirit-caller snails, but other foes use stealth or mimicry. This article explains how to detect and fight every type of invisible enemy, what tools work, and what to do when you have none.

Which Enemies Turn Invisible

Invisible enemies in Elden Ring fall into three main categories. Knowing which one you face changes your strategy:

  • Invisible Assassins (Black Knife Assassins) – These humanoid foes appear only as a faint shimmer or a dust trail when moving. They are found in the Consecrated Snowfield, specifically near the Apostate Derelict and the Yelough Anix Tunnel. They deal high damage and can backstab you if you lose track of them.
  • Spirit-Caller Snails – These snails are not invisible themselves, but they summon invisible spirits (often skeletons or knights) that fight you. The snail hides nearby, and killing it ends the summons. Found in the Spiritcaller Cave and other locations.
  • Stealth-based enemies – Some enemies, like the Fanged Imps or certain humanoid NPCs, can crouch and become hard to see in dark areas, but they are not truly invisible. They are revealed by sound or by using a torch.

How to Reveal Invisible Enemies

There are several reliable methods to make invisible enemies visible or at least track them. The most effective is the Sentinel’s Torch, a weapon that has a unique skill that reveals invisible enemies in a small radius. You can buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold after giving them the Assassin’s Prayerbook, which is found in the Consecrated Snowfield. When two-handed, the torch’s skill “Night’s Watch” creates a blue flame that makes invisible enemies shimmer.

Other options:

  • Margit’s Shackle – This item, used in the area near the invisible assassin in the Consecrated Snowfield, will briefly reveal them and cause them to stagger. It only works once per enemy, but it gives you a free hit.
  • Revealing Mist – A sorcery that can be learned from Sorcerer Rogier (if you give him the Black Knife Print) or from a scroll. It creates a mist that makes invisible enemies visible for a short time.
  • Unseen Form – Actually a spell that makes you invisible, but it does not reveal enemies. Some players mistakenly think it works; it doesn’t.
  • Watching the environment – Invisible assassins leave footprints in snow or dust, and their bodies distort light. If you look closely, you can see a faint outline, especially when they move.

Fighting Invisible Assassins Without Tools

If you haven’t obtained the torch or the shackle, you can still win. The key is to listen and watch for audio cues. Invisible assassins make a soft rustling sound when they walk, and they have a distinctive “whoosh” when they attack. Roll when you hear the whoosh, not when you see them. Also, they tend to circle you before striking, so if you hear movement circling, prepare to dodge. Lock-on does not work on invisible enemies, so you must manually aim your attacks. Use wide sweeping attacks (like a greatsword’s heavy attack) to catch them when they get close. Alternatively, use a shield and block; even if you can’t see them, you can block their attack and then counter.

Spirit-Caller Snails and Their Invisible Summons

The Spirit-Caller Snails are a different problem. They are visible as a large snail-like creature, often hiding in a corner or behind a wall. They continuously summon invisible spirits that attack you. The trick is to ignore the spirits and find the snail. The snail has a distinct glow or a faint blue aura that you can spot. Use a torch or the Revealing Mist to see the snail’s location. Once you kill the snail, all summoned spirits vanish instantly. In the Spiritcaller Cave, the snail is in a room behind a fog wall, but you can also find it by following the spirits’ path – they always spawn from the snail’s direction.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

Many players try to use the Assassin’s Gambit skill (which makes you invisible) to spot enemies – it does not work. Others waste time using the Unseen Form spell. Neither reveals enemies. Another mistake is relying on lock-on; lock-on simply won’t target invisible enemies, so you must fight without it. Also, some players think that hitting the invisible assassin with a status effect like poison or bleed will reveal them – it doesn’t, but it does show their location when they take damage, so it can help track them. Finally, don’t forget that the Sentinel’s Torch must be two-handed to activate the reveal effect; one-handed it’s just a torch.

Item Locations and Requirements

To get the Sentinel’s Torch, you need the Assassin’s Prayerbook, which is found in the Consecrated Snowfield, specifically in a ruined building near the Albinauric village. Give it to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold, and you can purchase the torch for 6,000 runes. The Margit’s Shackle is sold by Patches after you defeat Margit, or you can find it in a chest in Murkwater Cave. The Revealing Mist sorcery requires 12 Intelligence and 1 spell slot; you can learn it from Sorcerer Rogier if you give him the Black Knife Print (found in the Black Knife Catacombs) or from a scroll found in the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

Alternative Strategies for Specific Areas

In the Consecrated Snowfield, the invisible assassin is near the Apostate Derelict. You can run past it if you don’t want to fight, but if you want its drop (the Black Knife armor set), you must defeat it. Use the Margit’s Shackle to stun it, then hit it with a heavy weapon. In the Spiritcaller Cave, the snail is at the end; you can ignore the invisible spirits and run straight to the boss room. In Yelough Anix Tunnel, there are two invisible assassins; use the torch to reveal them one at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Crepus’s Vial or other talismans reveal invisible enemies? No. Talismans that reduce enemy detection or make you silent do not affect invisible enemies. Only the Sentinel’s Torch, Margit’s Shackle, and Revealing Mist work.

Can I use a summon to fight invisible enemies? Yes, but summons also cannot see them, so they will often stand idle. However, if you use the torch to reveal the enemy, your summons will attack it. Spirit Ashes that use area attacks, like the Banished Knight Oleg, can help.

Why can’t I lock on to the invisible assassin? The game intentionally disables lock-on for these enemies. You must manually aim. Use a weapon with a wide swing or a spell that hits an area.

Is there a way to see invisible enemies without the torch? In the Consecrated Snowfield, the snow on the ground shows footprints when the assassin moves. Also, the assassin’s body has a slight shimmer that you can see if you look closely. In dark areas, use a torch (regular) to light up the area; it won’t reveal them, but it helps you see the shimmer.

Do invisible enemies drop anything special? The Invisible Assassins drop the Black Knife armor set and the Black Knife dagger (a rare drop). The Spirit-Caller Snails drop a larval tear and sometimes a spirit summon. Worth fighting if you want those items.

Can I parry an invisible enemy? Yes, you can parry their attacks, but you need to time it by sound. Listen for the attack whoosh and press parry just before it lands. It’s risky but possible.
