The phrase “somewhere a Great Rune has broken appears in Elden Ring when you defeat a major demigod boss. It means you have permanently removed that boss’s Great Rune from the Elden Ring, which is a core story event that unlocks new gameplay options. This guide explains exactly what the message means, what changes in your game, and how to use the Great Rune you just obtained.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a run. The formula for pace is:

Pace (min/km) = Total time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)

And for speed:

Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Total time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Variables:

  • t – total finish time in minutes (e.g., 50 min)
  • d – distance in kilometers (e.g., 10 km)
  • Pace – minutes per kilometer, the standard running metric
  • Speed – kilometers per hour, how fast you are moving overall

Worked Example

Using the default values: t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

So with a 50-minute 10K, your average pace is 5:00 per kilometer and your average speed is 12.0 km/h.

What the Message Means in Elden Ring

When you defeat a shardbearer like Godrick, Rennala, Radahn, Rykard, Morgott, or Malenia, the game displays “Somewhere a Great Rune has broken. This is not random flavor text – it is a direct confirmation that you have shattered that demigod’s Great Rune, which is a fragment of the original Elden Ring. The event is permanent and affects both the story and your character’s power.

In the lore, the Elden Ring was shattered by Queen Marika, and the demigods each took a Great Rune. By defeating them, you are literally breaking their rune, which is why the message appears. It also marks a checkpoint in the game’s progression: you now hold a Great Rune that you can equip and activate.

How to Use a Great Rune After It Breaks

Getting the message is only the first step. To actually benefit from the Great Rune, you must do three things:

  1. Find the Divine Tower – each Great Rune has a corresponding tower (e.g., Godrick’s is in Limgrave, Radahn’s is in Caelid). You must climb the tower and activate the rune at the top.
  2. Equip the Rune – open your inventory, go to the “Great Runes tab, and select the rune to equip it at a Site of Grace.
  3. Use a Rune Arc – the rune’s effect only activates while you are under the influence of a Rune Arc (consumable item). If you die, the effect ends until you use another Rune Arc.

Each Great Rune grants a different passive bonus. For example, Godrick’s Great Rune raises all your attributes by +5, while Radahn’s increases HP, FP, and Stamina by 15%. Rennala’s rune allows you to respec your character, but it is not a passive buff – it is used at the Grand Library in Raya Lucaria.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

Many players think the message means they have permanently lost the rune or that it is automatically equipped. Neither is true. The rune is in your inventory, but it does nothing until you activate it at the correct tower and use a Rune Arc.

Another common issue is not knowing which tower corresponds to which rune. The game does not mark towers on your map, but you can find them by exploring the region where you defeated the boss. For example, Godrick’s tower is the large structure just east of Stormveil Castle, and Radahn’s is in the northeast of Caelid.

If you are playing on New Game+ (NG+), the message appears again when you defeat each boss, and you can re-acquire the rune and re-activate it. The effect stacks with your existing stats, but you still need a Rune Arc to activate it.

Why the Message Appears Only for Demigods

The message specifically triggers for bosses that hold a Great Rune, which are the main story bosses. Optional bosses like the Tree Sentinel or the Gargoyles do not trigger it because they do not carry a Great Rune. The only exception is Rennala, who does not have a traditional Great Rune but instead holds a “Great Rune of the Unborn – defeating her still triggers the message, but the rune is used for respecing rather than a passive buff.

This distinction matters because it tells you which bosses are essential to the main quest. If you see the message, you know you have just defeated a shardbearer and that you are one step closer to becoming Elden Lord.

Is It Possible to Miss a Great Rune?

No, you cannot permanently miss a Great Rune in a single playthrough. Every shardbearer is required to progress the story, so you will eventually fight them all. However, you can choose to skip the optional ones like Malenia or Mohg, but they are not required to reach the final boss. If you skip them, you simply never see the message for them, but you can still go back and fight them later.

One thing to note: in the base game, there are seven Great Runes total, but you only need two to enter Leyndell. The rest are optional for the ending, but they give you powerful bonuses that can make the late game easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to use a Rune Arc every time I die?

Yes. The Great Rune’s effect lasts until you die. Once you respawn, the effect is gone, and you must consume another Rune Arc to reapply it. Rune Arcs are found throughout the world, dropped by rats, or purchased from merchants, so stock up early.

Which Great Rune is the best?

It depends on your build. Godrick’s Great Rune (+5 to all stats) is universally useful, especially early game. Radahn’s (+15% HP, FP, Stamina) is great for tanky builds. Morgott’s (+25% HP) is excellent for survivability. For mages, Rennala’s rune is not a buff but allows respecing, which is invaluable.

Can I activate a Great Rune without going to the tower?

No. The rune is inert until you visit the corresponding Divine Tower and interact with the altar at the top. The tower is usually guarded by tough enemies, so be prepared for a fight.

What happens if I defeat a boss but don’t see the message?

That means the boss did not hold a Great Rune. Only shardbearers trigger the message. If you are sure you defeated a shardbearer and did not see it, check your inventory – you may have missed the notification, but the rune should be there.

Does the Great Rune break permanently if I die?

No. The rune itself is permanent once you acquire it. Only the temporary effect from the Rune Arc ends on death. You can reapply it as many times as you have Rune Arcs.

Can I trade or drop a Great Rune?

No. Great Runes are key items and cannot be dropped, traded, or discarded. They remain in your inventory for the rest of that playthrough.
