Rice is a valuable crop in Enshrouded, used for cooking dishes that restore a lot of health and stamina. To get rice, you must first locate rice seeds in the world, then plant and harvest them at your base using a Farm Soil bed. This guide covers exactly where to find seeds, how to farm them efficiently, and what to cook with your harvest.
Where to Find Rice Seeds
Rice seeds are found as loot in specific locations, most commonly in the Ambervale region and the Nomad Highlands. The most reliable early source is the Villagers’ Farmstead, located southwest of the Braelyn Bridge fast-travel point. Search the wooden crates, sacks, and barrels around the farmhouse – seeds often drop from these containers. You can also find rice seeds inside Golden Chests scattered across the Nomad Highlands, particularly in the ruined villages and towers. If you’re lucky, you might find them in Elixir Well chests, but that’s a higher-level area.
Unlike some other crops, rice seeds are not sold by the Farmer NPC. You must explore and loot to get your first batch. Once you have a few seeds, you can multiply them infinitely by planting and harvesting.
How to Plant and Grow Rice
To grow rice, you need two things: a Farm Soil bed and the Farmer NPC unlocked at your base. Follow these steps:
- Unlock the Farmer by rescuing her from the Ancient Vault – Farmer (located in the Springlands, near the first tower).
- Craft Farm Soil at the Farmer’s workbench using 1 Dirt and 1 Plant Fiber. You can place multiple Farm Soil blocks to create a larger field.
- Equip the Hoe (crafted at the Workbench) and use it on the Farm Soil to till it. The soil will turn into a darker, ready-to-plant texture.
- Open your inventory, select the Rice Seeds, and plant them on the tilled soil. Each seed occupies one block.
- Wait for the rice to grow. It takes about 10–15 minutes of real time for rice to fully mature. You can speed this up by sleeping in a bed nearby, but sleeping doesn’t skip the growth timer in Enshrouded – it only passes time for the day/night cycle.
- When the rice plants are tall and golden, interact with them to harvest. You’ll receive 2–4 rice per plant, and occasionally a seed back.
Important: Rice does not need water. Unlike real-world rice paddies, the game treats it like any other crop. Just keep the soil tilled and the plants will grow.
How to Multiply Seeds Efficiently
Each rice plant has a chance to drop a seed when harvested. On average, you’ll get about 1 seed per 3–4 plants. To grow your stock quickly, follow this loop:
- Plant all your seeds in a large field.
- Harvest everything at once.
- Keep all the rice you get, but replant every seed you find.
- Repeat until you have a field of 50+ plants.
Once you have a steady supply, you can stop replanting seeds and instead use them for cooking. A single farm of 20 plants will give you enough rice for dozens of meals.
What to Cook with Rice
Rice is a key ingredient in several high-value recipes. The most useful early dish is Rice Porridge, which requires 1 rice and 1 water. It restores 30 health and 20 stamina over time – great for exploration. Later, you can make Rice and Beans (1 rice + 1 beans) for a bigger stamina boost, or Rice Soup (1 rice + 1 meat + 1 water) for a hearty meal that restores both health and stamina. These recipes unlock automatically once you have the ingredients and the Farmer NPC at your base.
Rice is also used in some animal feed recipes, but those are less common. If you have a surplus, store it in a chest – it never spoils.
Common Mistakes and Tips
- Don’t plant on regular dirt – you must use Farm Soil and till it with the Hoe. Regular dirt won’t grow anything.
- Don’t harvest too early – if you interact with a young plant, you’ll get nothing. Wait until the plant is fully grown (tall and golden).
- Keep your farm protected – enemies can trample crops. Build a fence or place your farm on a high platform.
- Use the Farmer’s workbench – you can craft a Seedbed that turns 1 rice into 2 rice seeds, but it requires the Farmer to be assigned. This is a great way to multiply seeds without relying on harvest drops.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy rice seeds from any NPC?
No, the Farmer NPC does not sell rice seeds. You must find them in the world. The best early spot is the Villagers’ Farmstead in the Springlands – check all the crates and sacks.
Does rice need water to grow?
No, in Enshrouded rice grows on any tilled Farm Soil, just like wheat or vegetables. There is no irrigation mechanic in the game.
How long does rice take to grow?
Rice takes about 10–15 minutes of real time to mature. Sleeping doesn’t speed it up, but you can do other tasks while waiting.
What’s the best recipe using rice early in the game?
Rice Porridge (1 rice + 1 water) is the easiest and most useful early recipe. It restores 30 health and 20 stamina, which is great for exploring the Springlands.
Can I get rice from farming without seeds?
No, you must have at least one rice seed to start. Once you have one, you can use the Seedbed to turn 1 rice into 2 seeds, or just rely on harvest drops.
Does rice spoil in storage?
No, rice and all other crops in Enshrouded never spoil. You can stockpile them indefinitely in chests.
