Instructions
- Unlock the Farmer: Progress through the main quest until you rescue the Farmer NPC from the Ancient Vault. Place their Summoning Staff in your base to unlock the Farmer crafting station.
- Craft Farm Soil: At the Farmer’s workbench, combine 5 Dirt, 1 Plant Fiber, and 1 Water to create Farm Soil. You’ll need this to plant any seeds.
- Build a Farm Plot: Use the Hammer to build a Farm Plot (requires 1 Farm Soil). It’s a 1×1 block of tilled soil. You can place multiple plots side by side to create a larger field.
- Plant Seeds: With seeds in your inventory, interact with the Farm Plot and select the seed you want to plant. Each plot holds one plant.
- Water the Plants: Use a Watering Can (crafted at the Workbench) filled with water from a well or river. Water your plants daily (in-game) to speed up growth and increase yield. Unwatered plants grow slower but still mature.
- Harvest: When the plant is fully grown (indicated by a glowing prompt), interact with it to harvest. You’ll get the crop and sometimes extra seeds.
- Unlock Cooking: Rescue the Cook NPC from the Ancient Vault and place their Summoning Staff. This unlocks the Cooking Station (a campfire with a pot) and the Oven.
- Cook Basic Dishes: At the Cooking Station, combine raw ingredients like meat, vegetables, and water to make stews, soups, and roasted meats. At the Oven, bake bread and pies.
- Learn Recipes: Recipes are unlocked by finding them in the world (in chests, on tables) or by experimenting with ingredients. The Cook NPC also sells some recipes.
- Apply Buffs: Eat cooked dishes to gain temporary buffs. These are shown in your character screen. Buffs typically last 10-20 minutes and provide bonuses like increased health, stamina, or resistance.
Tips
- Prioritize Wheat and Potatoes: These are the most versatile crops. Wheat makes flour (for bread and other baked goods), and potatoes are used in many hearty stews.
- Build a Rain Collector: Place a Rain Collector (crafted from 10 Stone, 5 Wood, 2 Metal Scraps) near your farm. It automatically fills with water when it rains, saving you trips to the river.
- Use Fertilizer: Craft Fertilizer (from Animal Bones and Plant Fiber) at the Farmer’s workbench. Applying it to a Farm Plot increases growth speed and yield significantly.
- Don’t Forget Herbs: Herbs like Thyme and Rosemary are not farmable initially but can be foraged. They are essential for many advanced recipes, so always pick them when you see them.
- Check Buff Duration: Buffs from food are temporary. Always check the duration and re-apply before a big fight or long exploration session.
Serving Suggestions
- Before Combat: Eat a Hearty Stew (increases max health) or a Spicy Curry (increases fire resistance and melee damage).
- For Exploration: Drink Herbal Tea (increases stamina regeneration) or eat a Vegetable Soup (increases endurance).
- For Building: Eat a Honey Glazed Ham (increases mining speed) or Bread with Butter (increases carrying capacity).
- For Farming: Eat a Roasted Mushroom (increases farming yield) or a Berry Tart (increases movement speed).
Variations
- Substitute Ingredients: Most recipes allow for substitutions. For example, any meat can replace another, and most vegetables are interchangeable. Experiment to use what you have.
- Upgrade to Better Dishes: As you unlock better ingredients, you’ll get access to improved versions of basic dishes. For example, a simple Roasted Meat can be upgraded to a Marinated Roast with herbs and honey.
- Regional Specialties: Some recipes are only found in specific biomes. For example, the Desert biome has recipes using cactus and scorpion meat, while the Mountains have recipes using snowberries and wolf meat.
Storage and Reheating
- Storage: Cooked dishes do not spoil in Enshrouded, so you can store them in any chest indefinitely. However, they do take up inventory space, so only carry what you need.
- Reheating: You don’t need to reheat food. Buffs are applied immediately upon eating, regardless of temperature.
- Bulk Cooking: Cook in bulk when you have a lot of ingredients. This saves time and ensures you always have buffs ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I get more seeds? Harvesting crops gives a chance to drop seeds. You can also buy them from the Farmer NPC or find them in the world. Some rare seeds are only found in specific locations.
- Why won’t my plants grow? Plants need to be watered. Make sure your Farm Plots are not in a dark area (they need sunlight) and that you are not away from the base for too long, as growth pauses when you are far away.
- What’s the best food for early game? Roasted Meat and Vegetable Soup are easy to make and provide solid buffs. They only require basic ingredients like raw meat and potatoes.
- Can I farm animals? Yes, you can build a Chicken Coop and a Livestock Pen. Chickens lay eggs, and animals like boars and deer can be bred for meat.
- Do buffs stack? No, eating a new food replaces the current food buff. You cannot have two food buffs at the same time. However, you can have one food buff and one potion buff simultaneously.
- How long do buffs last? Most food buffs last between 10 and 20 minutes. The exact duration is shown in the item description. Some advanced dishes have longer durations.
