Alliance in World of Warcraft: Full Walkthrough

Card No. 06·17116 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide explains how to complete the Alliance leveling and story content in World of Warcraft from level 1 to max level, covering the main quest chains, dungeons, and endgame activities. You will learn the recommended zone order, how to use the new leveling system, and what to do after reaching the level cap.

Background: The Alliance Factions and Starting Zones

The Alliance is one of the two major factions in World of Warcraft, comprising humans, dwarves, night elves, gnomes, draenei, and worgen. Each race has its own unique starting zone and introductory quest chain, but all paths converge in the broader leveling experience. Since the Battle for Azeroth expansion, new players are guided through a linear path called Battle for Azeroth content from level 10 to 50, then into Shadowlands from 50 to 60, and now Dragonflight from 60 to 70.

For a fresh character, the starting zone depends on your race:

  • Human: Elwynn Forest (levels 1-10)
  • Dwarf and Gnome: Dun Morogh (levels 1-10)
  • Night Elf: Teldrassil (levels 1-10)
  • Draenei: Azuremyst Isle (levels 1-10)
  • Worgen: Gilneas (levels 1-10)
  • Pandaren (Alliance choice): The Wandering Isle (levels 1-10)

After completing your racial starting zone, the game directs you to the Battle for Azeroth intro quest in Kul Tiras, regardless of race. This is the main leveling path for levels 10-50.

How the Leveling System Works Now

Since Shadowlands and continuing through Dragonflight, WoW uses a level squish and a streamlined progression. You start at level 1, reach level 10 by finishing your racial zone, then you are sent to the Battle for Azeroth campaign. You stay in Kul Tiras (or Zandalar if you choose the Horde) until level 50, then you move to the Shadowlands intro and level to 60, and finally to the Dragon Isles for 60-70.

If you have previously leveled a character, you can use Chromie Time to level through any old expansion (e.g., Wrath of the Lich King, Legion) from 10-50 instead. Chromie Time scales all quests and dungeons to your level, so you can fully experience a single expansion without outleveling it. To activate it, talk to Chromie in your capital city (Stormwind for Alliance) and choose an expansion timeline.

Alliance Leveling Zone Order (Kul Tiras)

For Alliance players, the Battle for Azeroth campaign is split across three zones in Kul Tiras, each tied to a major house and a story arc. You can do the zones in any order, but the recommended order for leveling efficiency is:

  1. Tiragarde Sound (level 10-20): The main port zone, home to the city of Boralus. Quests here introduce you to the Kul Tiran navy and the local conflict with the Horde.
  2. Drustvar (level 20-30): A dark, witch-haunted forest zone. This is often considered the best-written Alliance zone, with a gothic horror theme.
  3. Stormsong Valley (level 30-40): A rural farming region with a Lovecraftian subplot involving the Old Gods. The zone ends with a major dungeon, Shrine of the Storm.

After completing all three zones, you will receive the War Campaign quests, which send you to the Horde continent of Zandalar for a few quests and ultimately lead to the Battle for Azeroth dungeons and raids.

Dungeons and Raids for Alliance

While leveling, you can queue for dungeons via the Dungeon Finder (default hotkey: I). The Battle for Azeroth dungeons available to Alliance players are:

  • Freehold (Tiragarde Sound) – a pirate-themed dungeon
  • Waycrest Manor (Drustvar) – a haunted mansion
  • Shrine of the Storm (Stormsong Valley) – an Old God temple
  • Siege of Boralus (unlocked via War Campaign) – a city defense
  • Tol Dagor (Tiragarde Sound) – a prison
  • The Underrot (Zandalar) – accessed via War Campaign
  • Kings’ Rest (Zandalar) – a high-level dungeon

At level 50, you move to Shadowlands and gain access to its four leveling dungeons: The Necrotic Wake, Plaguefall, Mists of Tirna Scithe, and Halls of Atonement. At level 60, you enter Dragonflight and can run its four leveling dungeons: Ruby Life Pools, The Nokhud Offensive, The Azure Vault, and Algeth’ar Academy.

Endgame Content After Max Level

Once you reach level 70 (the current cap in Dragonflight), the Alliance endgame mirrors the Horde’s. You will:

  1. Complete the Dragonflight main story to unlock world quests, dragonriding, and the Forbidden Reach.
  2. Start gearing up via world quests, dungeons, and the Great Vault (weekly reward system).
  3. Participate in the current raid tier (e.g., Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible) on Normal, Heroic, or Mythic difficulty.
  4. Engage in PvP (battlegrounds and arenas) if that interests you.
  5. Pursue optional content like reputation grinds, achievements, transmog collecting, and pet battles.

For Alliance players specifically, there is no unique endgame content beyond faction-specific story quests and the aesthetics of your capital city. The faction choice mainly affects your home city (Stormwind vs. Orgrimmar), racial abilities, and which NPCs you interact with.

Common Problems and How to Solve Them

Players often encounter a few issues while leveling an Alliance character:

  • Stuck on a quest: Check your quest log (L) for objectives you may have missed. If the quest marker is missing, try reloading the UI (type /reload) or abandoning and re-accepting the quest.
  • Can’t find Chromie Time: Chromie is only available if you have at least one character at level 60 on your account. If you are a first-time player, you must go through Battle for Azeroth content.
  • Leveling too fast or too slow: If you outlevel a zone before finishing it, you can switch to a new zone or enable Chromie Time on an alt. If you are leveling too slowly, make sure you are queuing for dungeons and doing bonus objectives.
  • Zone scaling not working: In Chromie Time, if you leave the timeline (e.g., by joining a friend’s group on a different expansion), you may lose the scaling. Re-talk to Chromie to reset it.
  • War Campaign not appearing: The War Campaign is unlocked at level 35 and requires you to complete the three main zones’ storylines. Check your quest log for a quest called “The War Campaign” or “Uniting Kul Tiras.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to play the Alliance story to reach max level? No. You can level entirely through dungeons, PvP, or gathering professions if you prefer. The story quests are the most efficient and give the best gear, but they are not mandatory.

Can I switch to the Horde later? No, faction changes are not available in-game for free. You can purchase a faction change service from the Blizzard store, but it costs real money and is separate from leveling.

What is the fastest way to level an Alliance character? The fastest method is to queue for dungeons while doing quests in the open world. For experienced players, using Chromie Time to pick a fast expansion like Warlords of Draenor (with bonus objectives) is often quicker than the default Battle for Azeroth path.

Why am I being sent to Kul Tiras instead of my racial zone? Since Shadowlands, all new players are funneled into the Battle for Azeroth expansion for levels 10-50. This is intentional to provide a cohesive story. You can visit your racial capital anytime, but the leveling quests are in Kul Tiras.

Do I need to buy the latest expansion to level past 50? Yes. To level from 50 to 70, you need Dragonflight (the current expansion). Without it, you can still level to 50 and play all previous content, but you cannot enter the Dragon Isles.

Is the Alliance story different from the Horde? Yes, the leveling zones are completely different. The Alliance levels in Kul Tiras, while the Horde levels in Zandalar. The endgame content (raids, dungeons, and world quests) is shared, but the leveling experience is faction-specific.
