This article compares the three golden cars in F-Zero GX — the Golden Fox, Golden Phoenix, and Golden Falcon — by their stats, tells you which one is strongest for each play style, and explains the best way to use them in story mode and Grand Prix. The Golden Fox is the best overall for time trials and story mode, while the Golden Falcon is the best for beginners and combat-heavy races.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a race. The formula for pace is:

Pace = Finish time ÷ Distance

where Finish time is in minutes and Distance is in kilometers. The result is your pace in minutes per kilometer (min/km). The speed is:

Speed = Distance ÷ (Finish time ÷ 60)

which gives kilometers per hour (km/h). This is the same math you would use to compare lap times on different F-Zero tracks, though the game itself shows lap times in seconds and track lengths are fixed per course.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: you finish a 10 km track in 50 minutes. First, find the pace:

Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km

Then find the speed:

Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h

So your average pace is 5 minutes per kilometer and your average speed is 12 km/h. In F-Zero GX, a typical lap on Mute City is about 1.5 km and top racers finish it in under 40 seconds, which would be a pace of about 0.44 min/km and a speed of roughly 135 km/h — but the game’s ships travel at fictional speeds far beyond real-world vehicles.

How to Unlock the Golden Cars

The three golden machines are not available from the start. You unlock them by completing specific tasks in Story Mode:

  • Golden Fox – Finish Chapter 7 (“The F-Zero Grand Prixâ€) with a total time under 4:25:00 across all five races.
  • Golden Phoenix – Finish Chapter 4 (“Challenge of the Bloody Chainâ€) without taking any damage from the enemy machines.
  • Golden Falcon – Finish Chapter 3 (“Falcon’s Legendâ€) with a time under 1:45:00.

These are the only ways to get them in the game. The Golden Fox is widely considered the hardest to unlock because Chapter 7 demands consistent top-3 finishes against the game’s toughest AI.

Stat Comparison: Golden Fox vs. Golden Phoenix vs. Golden Falcon

Each golden car has the same base stats as its normal counterpart, but with a unique boost in one area. The in-game stat bars are:

  • Body – durability when hitting walls or other machines
  • Boost – how long the boost meter lasts
  • Grip – cornering ability and how well the ship holds the track
  • Power – acceleration and top speed potential

Here are the actual stat values (out of 10) for each golden ship:

  • Golden Fox – Body 4, Boost 8, Grip 5, Power 7. Total 24.
  • Golden Phoenix – Body 6, Boost 6, Grip 6, Power 6. Total 24.
  • Golden Falcon – Body 7, Boost 5, Grip 7, Power 5. Total 24.

All three have the same total, but they distribute points very differently. The Golden Fox is a boost-focused machine, the Golden Falcon is a balanced/all-rounder, and the Golden Phoenix sits in the middle with no weak stat.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Each Golden Car

Golden Fox – Its 8/10 boost is the highest of any machine in the game. This makes it the fastest ship in a straight line when you chain boosts correctly. The weakness is its low body (4) and mediocre grip (5), so it slides in corners and takes heavy damage from wall scrapes. It is the best choice for time trials and story mode chapters that require speed, but you must drive cleanly.

Golden Phoenix – With all stats at 6, it is the most balanced golden car. It has no major weakness, but also no standout strength. It is a good middle-ground pick for players who want a machine that can do a bit of everything without punishing mistakes. Its boost is average, so you will not set world-record times, but you will finish races more consistently.

Golden Falcon – The highest body (7) and grip (7) make it the most forgiving and the best for combat. It can take hits from rival machines and still stay on the track. The trade-off is a low boost (5) and power (5), meaning it is slower on straights and accelerates gently. It is the best choice for Grand Prix modes where rival attacks are frequent, and for players still learning the game’s physics.

Best Uses for Each Golden Car

Your choice depends on what mode you are playing:

  • Time Trials / Story Mode – Use the Golden Fox. Its boost meter lets you maintain high speed through laps if you use the “boost chainâ€ technique (boosting three times in quick succession on straights). On tracks like Mute City and Port Town, this saves 2-3 seconds per lap.
  • Grand Prix (Standard or Hard) – Use the Golden Falcon. The AI is aggressive and will ram you constantly. The high grip and body help you recover from hits and hold your line through corners. The lower boost is less of a problem because you can still win races with smart driving.
  • VS Mode against friends – Use the Golden Phoenix if you want a fair fight, or the Golden Fox if you want to dominate on boost-heavy tracks. The Phoenix is the most balanced for multiplayer because it does not favor one style.
  • Survival / Elimination modes – The Golden Falcon is the clear winner. Its high body lets you survive more collisions, and its grip keeps you on the track when rivals try to push you off.

Common Misconceptions and Mistakes

A frequent misconception is that the Golden Fox is the “best car because it has the highest boost. In reality, its low body and grip make it terrible for beginners and for tracks with many sharp turns. Another mistake is assuming the golden cars are faster than all others – they are not. The standard Blue Falcon has the same stats as the Golden Falcon, and the only difference is cosmetic (the gold paint). The golden versions do not have hidden stat boosts beyond what the bars show.

Another common error is using the Golden Fox without mastering the boost chain. If you just hold the boost button, you will run out of meter quickly and slow down. The correct technique is to tap boost three times in a row on a straight, then release and let the meter recharge. This gives you a speed burst without draining the meter completely.

How to Choose Your Golden Car

Ask yourself two questions: what mode are you playing, and how confident are you in your driving? If you are a veteran who can avoid walls, pick the Golden Fox. If you are newer or playing against aggressive AI, pick the Golden Falcon. If you want a balanced ship that works everywhere, pick the Golden Phoenix.

You can also test each car in Time Trial mode on the same track (e.g., Mute City) and compare your lap times. The car that gives you the most consistent fast laps is the one you should use. Remember that the track layout matters: on twisty courses like Sand Ocean, the Golden Falcon’s grip will beat the Golden Fox’s boost; on straight courses like Big Blue, the Golden Fox is faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which golden car has the highest top speed?

The Golden Fox has the highest top speed because its boost stat (8) allows longer and more frequent boosts. However, its base speed without boost is lower than the Golden Falcon’s grip-based speed on corners. In a straight line, the Golden Fox wins.

Is the Golden Falcon good for story mode?

Yes, especially for chapters with many rival attacks, like Chapter 4. Its high body and grip let you survive hits and stay on track. For time-based chapters like Chapter 7, the Golden Fox is better because you need speed.

Do golden cars have better stats than normal cars?

No. Each golden car has exactly the same stats as its normal counterpart (e.g., Golden Falcon = Blue Falcon). The only difference is the paint job. The unlock challenge is the only reason to get them.

Can you use golden cars in all modes?

Yes, once unlocked, they appear in your garage and can be used in Grand Prix, Time Trial, VS Mode, and Story Mode (after you have completed the story once).

What is the best golden car for beginners?

The Golden Falcon. Its high grip and body make it forgiving, and its low boost means you will not accidentally overboost and crash. It is the easiest to control.

Why is the Golden Fox so hard to unlock?

Because Chapter 7 requires you to finish in the top three in every race while maintaining a total time under 4:25. The AI is extremely aggressive and fast, so you need near-perfect driving and boost management.
