A factory reset wipes your phone’s user data and settings, returning the software to its out-of-the-box state, while a carrier unlock removes the software restriction that ties the phone to one network. A factory reset changes nothing about your phone’s carrier lock status, and a carrier unlock does not erase any of your data. They are two completely separate operations that are often confused because both are commonly performed when selling or troubleshooting a phone.

Formula

The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a run, bike ride, or walk. The two formulas are:

Pace (min/km) = Finish Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)

Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish Time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Where:

  • Finish Time (t) – the total time taken, in minutes.
  • Distance (d) – the total distance covered, in kilometers.
  • Pace – the time it takes to cover one kilometer, in minutes per kilometer.
  • Speed – the average velocity, in kilometers per hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: a finish time of 50 minutes and a distance of 10 km.

Step 1: Calculate pace
Pace = 50 min ÷ 10 km = 5.0 min/km

Step 2: Calculate speed
Speed = 10 km ÷ (50 min ÷ 60) = 10 km ÷ 0.8333 hr = 12.0 km/h

So the average pace is 5:00 min/km and the average speed is 12.0 km/h. This matches the calculator’s output.

What a Factory Reset Actually Does

A factory reset, also called a hard reset or master reset, restores the device’s operating system to its default state. It removes:

  • All user-installed apps and their data
  • Photos, videos, music, and documents stored in internal storage
  • Contacts, messages, call logs, and calendar entries
  • Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and saved networks
  • Personalization settings, wallpapers, and accessibility options

What it does not touch is the baseband firmware or the carrier lock status. The SIM lock is stored in a separate, secure partition that is not erased by a factory reset. Even after a reset, the phone will still ask for the original carrier’s SIM card unless it has been officially unlocked.

What a Carrier Unlock Actually Does

A carrier unlock is a software change that tells the phone’s modem to accept SIM cards from any compatible network. It works by modifying the lock status in the device’s baseband or secure element, which is separate from the user data partition. After an unlock, you can insert a SIM from another carrier and the phone will connect to that network.

An unlock does not:

  • Erase any of your personal data or apps
  • Change the operating system version or settings
  • Remove any carrier-specific bloatware that is already installed
  • Affect the phone’s warranty (in most regions, though this varies)

It is purely a network-level change. Your photos, messages, and settings remain exactly where they were.

Why People Confuse the Two

The confusion often arises because both procedures are recommended when selling a phone. A seller typically does a factory reset to wipe personal data, and also requests an unlock so the buyer can use their own carrier. Since both happen around the same time, people assume they are linked. Another reason is that some carriers require a factory reset after an unlock to refresh the network settings, but that is a carrier-specific step, not a universal one.

There is also a common misconception that a factory reset can bypass a carrier lock. It cannot. The lock is stored in the baseband, not in the user-accessible storage that a reset clears. If you reset a locked phone, it will still be locked.

How to Check Your Phone’s Lock Status

If you are not sure whether your phone is carrier-locked, there are a few general ways to check:

  • Insert a SIM card from a different carrier. If the phone displays an error like “Invalid SIM” or “SIM not supported,” it is locked.
  • Go to Settings → About Phone → Status or Settings → Connections → Network (exact path varies by manufacturer). Some phones show “SIM lock status” here.
  • Contact your current carrier and ask them to check the IMEI against their database.

For iPhones, you can go to Settings → General → About and look for “Carrier Lock.” If it says “No SIM restrictions,” the phone is unlocked.

Order of Operations: Reset or Unlock First?

The order does not matter technically, but there is a practical recommendation. If you are selling the phone, do the factory reset after the unlock. This ensures the new owner receives a clean device that is already unlocked. If you reset first and then request an unlock, the phone will still be locked until the carrier processes the request, which can take a few days.

If you are unlocking for personal use (e.g., traveling abroad), you do not need to reset at all. Just insert the new SIM and the phone should work.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

  • “My phone is still locked after a reset.” Correct, because a reset does not alter the SIM lock. You need to request an unlock from your carrier.
  • “An unlock will delete my photos.” No, an unlock only changes the network restriction. Your data stays intact.
  • “I can unlock by changing the IMEI.” This is illegal in many countries and can permanently brick the phone. Only use official carrier unlocks or reputable third-party services that do not modify the IMEI.
  • “A factory reset will remove the carrier lock.” False. The lock is stored in the baseband, not in the user data partition.
  • “After an unlock, I can update the phone normally.” Yes, unlocked phones receive the same software updates as locked ones, though some carrier-specific updates may be delayed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a factory reset remove the carrier lock on my phone?

No. A factory reset only clears user data and settings. The carrier lock is stored in a separate secure area of the phone’s firmware, so it remains unchanged after a reset.

Does unlocking my phone erase my contacts or apps?

No. Unlocking only changes the network restriction. Your contacts, apps, photos, and settings are untouched.

Should I reset or unlock first when selling my phone?

Unlock first, then reset. This way the buyer receives a clean, unlocked device. If you reset first, the phone is still locked until the carrier processes the unlock request.

Can I unlock my phone for free?

Many carriers provide free unlocks after you meet their requirements, such as completing your contract or paying off the device. Third-party unlock services usually charge a fee, but they are not always legitimate.

How long does a carrier unlock take?

It varies by carrier. Some unlock instantly via an automated system, while others take a few business days. Check with your carrier for their specific timeline.

Will unlocking my phone void the warranty?

In most regions, unlocking does not void the warranty, but it may affect carrier-specific support. Check your carrier’s policy, as some may refuse support for unlocked devices.
