A feet to yards calculator converts a length in feet (ft) into yards (yd) by dividing the number of feet by 3. Enter a length in feet to get its equivalent in yards, with the exact conversion formula explained below.

Formula

The conversion is yards = feet ÷ 3. There are exactly 3 feet in 1 yard, so the conversion factor is exact rather than an estimate.

  • ft is the entered length in feet.
  • yd is the equivalent length in yards.
  • inches is the fractional part of the yard result expressed as inches; it helps show a mixed yards-and-inches measurement. One yard contains 36 inches.

The calculator accepts zero or a positive number of feet. It displays the yard result to two decimal places. Its additional inches result represents only the remainder after whole yards; it is rounded to two decimal places as well.

Worked Example

For the default input of 30 ft:

  1. Divide feet by 3: 30 ÷ 3 = 10 yd.
  2. Find the fractional part of the yard result: 10 − 10 = 0 yd.
  3. Convert that remainder to inches: 0 × 36 = 0 in.

The calculator therefore returns 10.00 yd, with 0.00 remaining inches.

How to Use a Feet to Yards Calculator

Type the length in feet into the input field and read the result in yards. If the measurement includes inches as well as feet, first convert the inches to a fraction of a foot, then add that fraction to the feet value. There are 12 inches in a foot.

  • For 5 ft 6 in, convert 6 in to feet: 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft. Add it to 5 ft to get 5.5 ft.
  • Convert 5.5 ft to yards: 5.5 ÷ 3 = 1.8333… yd, or about 1.83 yd.

For a measurement already written in feet and decimal feet, such as 5.5 ft, no separate inches conversion is needed. The decimal part means half a foot, which is 6 inches.

Feet and Yards: What the Units Mean

The foot and yard are units of length in the customary system used in the United States and in some other contexts. Their relationship is fixed: 1 yard equals 3 feet, and 1 foot equals 12 inches. Consequently, 1 yard also equals 36 inches.

Both units are connected to the metric system through the international definition of the foot: 1 ft is exactly 0.3048 metres. Since a yard is 3 feet, 1 yd is exactly 0.9144 metres, or 91.44 centimetres. These are exact conversion relationships, although a displayed result may be rounded for convenience.

For example, 9 ft is exactly 3 yd. In metric units, 9 ft is 2.7432 m. These numbers describe the same length in different units; they are not separate measurements.

When to Convert and How to Read the Result

Feet-to-yards conversion is useful when a dimension is given in feet but a plan, description, or calculation uses yards. Lengths of fabric, sports-field dimensions, room measurements, and distances may appear in either unit. Check which unit the original measurement uses before converting, and label the result so it cannot be mistaken for feet.

A result such as 2.5 yd can also be expressed as 2 yd 18 in: the 0.5 yd remainder multiplied by 36 inches per yard is 18 inches. Alternatively, it is 7.5 ft. For ordinary use, decimal yards are often easier to enter into further calculations, while yards-and-inches notation may be easier to picture or communicate.

To convert the other way, multiply yards by 3. For instance, 4 yd × 3 = 12 ft. Multiplication and division are inverse operations, so converting a result back to the original unit is a useful check.

Common Conversion Mistakes and Rounding

  • Multiplying instead of dividing: To change feet to the larger unit, yards, divide by 3. Multiplying by 3 converts yards to feet.
  • Confusing decimal feet with inches: The value 5.5 ft means 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in. Multiply the decimal fraction by 12 to get its inches equivalent.
  • Mixing units in one calculation: Convert all lengths to the same unit before adding or comparing them. Adding 4 ft to 2 yd directly is incorrect until one value is converted.
  • Rounding too early: Keep the full calculator result while doing further calculations, then round the final answer to a useful precision. Two decimal places are convenient for many everyday conversions, but they do not imply that the original measurement was accurate to that level.

Because division by 3 can produce a repeating decimal, not every length has a short exact decimal-yard representation. For example, 1 ft is 0.3333… yd. The exact relationship remains 1 ÷ 3 yards; 0.33 yd is only a rounded display.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many yards are in a foot?
One foot is one-third of a yard, or approximately 0.3333 yd. Divide a number of feet by 3 to convert it to yards.

How many feet are in a yard?
There are exactly 3 feet in 1 yard. To convert yards to feet, multiply the yard measurement by 3.

How do I convert feet and inches to yards?
Convert the inches to feet by dividing them by 12, add that value to the feet, then divide the total feet by 3. For example, 3 ft 9 in is 3.75 ft, which equals 1.25 yd.

Is 1 yard exactly 0.91 metres?
No. One yard is exactly 0.9144 m. The value 0.91 m is a rounded approximation, so use 0.9144 when greater precision is needed.

Why does the calculator show a rounded result?
Some conversions produce repeating decimal values. The calculator displays two decimal places for readability; the underlying conversion is still feet divided by exactly 3.
