This walkthrough covers the “First Light” mission in Knightfall, specifically how to find the safe code and execute the perch escape. You’ll get the exact safe combination, the precise perch locations, and the step-by-step route to complete the mission without getting caught. The safe code is 7-3-9-1, and the perch escape requires you to use the three highlighted ledges on the east side of the courtyard.

Formula

The calculator above works out the minimum speed you need to maintain to reach the perch escape point in time. The formula is simple: Speed = Distance ÷ Time. In symbols, that’s v = d / t, where v is the speed in meters per minute, d is the distance from your current position to the perch in meters, and t is the time you have left before the alarm triggers. The second output converts that speed to kilometers per hour by dividing the distance in kilometers by the time in hours.

Worked Example

Using the default values from the calculator: you have 5 minutes to cover 120 meters. Step 1: write down the formula, v = d / t. Step 2: plug in the numbers, v = 120 / 5. Step 3: divide, v = 24 meters per minute. Step 4: convert to km/h, (120 / 1000) / (5 / 60) = 0.12 / 0.0833 = 1.44 km/h. So you need to move at a steady 24 m/min, which is a brisk walk, not a sprint. If you have to stop to fight or hack a door, that speed goes up, so the calculator helps you plan whether to sneak or run.

Mission Overview and Context

First Light is the second mission in Knightfall’s campaign, set in the rain-soaked Meridian District. Your objective is to infiltrate a fortified warehouse, retrieve a data drive from a safe in the foreman’s office, and then escape via the rooftops. The mission is infamous for its two difficulty spikes: finding the safe code without a direct hint, and the perch escape sequence where guards converge on your position. Most players get stuck because the code is not in the office itself; it is hidden in a series of three environmental clues spread across the warehouse floor.

The mission is designed to teach you the game’s three core mechanics: environmental observation (for the code), stealth takedowns (for the guards), and vertical mobility (for the escape). If you rush, you will trigger the alarm and face a much harder combat encounter. If you take your time, the mission is entirely stealthable, and the perch escape becomes a simple traversal puzzle.

Finding the Safe Code

The safe is in the foreman’s office on the second floor, but the code is not written anywhere near it. Instead, you must find three numbered plaques, each with a single digit, mounted on walls and machinery throughout the warehouse. The digits are always 7, 3, 9, and 1, but their locations are randomized each playthrough. However, the types of locations are fixed, so you can search efficiently.

  • Plaque 1 (hundreds digit): On the side of a large green generator on the ground floor, near the south loading bay. Look for a small metal plate at knee height.
  • Plaque 2 (tens digit): On the wall above a workbench in the northeast corner, partially hidden behind a stack of crates. You may need to climb the crates to read it.
  • Plaque 3 (ones digit): On the ceiling beam directly above the safe in the foreman’s office. Stand on the desk and look up; it is easy to miss if you are focused on the safe itself.

Once you have all three digits, enter them in the order you found them. The game does not tell you which digit goes where, but the order is always the order you discovered them. If you find the generator plaque first, that is the first digit, and so on. If you enter a wrong code, the safe beeps and you can retry immediately; there is no lockout penalty.

The Perch Escape: Step-by-Step

After you grab the data drive, the alarm automatically triggers, and you have roughly 90 seconds before reinforcements seal the exits. The perch escape is the only way out. The route is always the same, though you may need to adapt if guards are in your path.

  1. Exit the office window to the east. Do not use the door; it leads to a choke point with two guards.
  2. Cross the narrow catwalk to the adjacent building. Stay crouched; there is a sniper on a water tower to the north who will spot you if you stand.
  3. Jump to the first perch: a small balcony with a railing, about 10 meters below the catwalk. Land on the railing, not the floor, to avoid the patrol below.
  4. Shimmy along the ledge to the second perch: a ventilation unit with a flat top. Wait for the patrol to pass, then climb onto the unit.
  5. Grapple to the third perch: a rooftop antenna mast on the far side of the courtyard. This is the longest jump; make sure you are at full stamina before attempting it.
  6. Slide down the drainpipe on the far side of the antenna building. This drops you into an alley with no guards, ending the escape sequence.

The entire escape takes about 60 seconds if you do not stop. The calculator at the top of this page helps you check whether you are moving fast enough, but in practice, the only real time pressure is the first 30 seconds; after you reach the first perch, the guards reset their patrol routes and you can take your time.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The most common mistake is trying to fight the guards during the escape. The game gives you a pistol, but the reinforcements have body armor and will call in more. The perch escape is designed to be a non-combat route; if you fire a shot, the mission fails.

Another frequent error is misreading the safe code order. Players often assume the code is in numerical order (1-3-7-9) or that the plaques are labeled with their position. They are not. The order is strictly the order you found them. To avoid this, write down each digit as you find it, or take a screenshot with your phone.

A third mistake is skipping the third plaque because it is on the ceiling. Many players enter a three-digit code and fail, not realizing they only have two digits. Always check the ceiling in the office before entering any code.

Finally, during the escape, players sometimes jump to the first perch too early, landing on the balcony floor instead of the railing. This causes a loud thud that alerts the patrol, who then shoots you while you are climbing to the second perch. Always aim for the railing; the game’s magnetism will pull you to it if you are close.

Why the Perch Escape Is the Only Viable Option

Some players wonder if they can simply run back through the warehouse the way they came. In theory, yes, but the route is blocked by a fire door that slams shut when the alarm triggers. The only other exit is a ground-level garage door, but it is guarded by a heavy turret that will kill you in two hits. The perch escape is the only route that avoids both the fire door and the turret, and it is also the only route that does not require a keycard, which you do not have at this point in the mission.

The perch route is also the intended tutorial for later missions. Knightfall uses this sequence to teach you that verticality is your friend; later missions have similar escape sequences that are much longer and more complex. Mastering the perch escape here makes the rest of the game significantly easier.

Alternative Approaches and New Game Plus

If you are playing on New Game Plus, you may have the “Silent Step” perk, which removes the sound penalty for landing on hard surfaces. With that perk, you can land on the balcony floor instead of the railing, which gives you a slightly easier angle for the second perch. However, the perk is not necessary; the railing landing is not difficult once you know to aim for it.

Another alternative is to use a smoke grenade to cover your run across the catwalk. The grenade blinds the sniper for about 5 seconds, which is enough time to cross. However, smoke grenades are a limited resource, and you might want to save them for later missions. The crouch method is always reliable, so only use the grenade if you are struggling with the sniper’s timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safe code in First Light? The code is always 7-3-9-1, but the order is randomized based on the order you find the three plaques. The plaques are on the generator, the workbench wall, and the ceiling beam in the office. If you find them in a different order, the code changes accordingly.

Can I skip the safe and just grab the data drive? No. The data drive is locked inside the safe, and the mission objective requires you to retrieve it. There is no way to open the safe without the code, and no way to bypass the safe itself.

What happens if I fail the perch escape? If you are caught or killed during the escape, you restart from the last checkpoint, which is right after you grab the data drive. The safe will already be open, so you do not need to re-enter the code. You will need to redo the escape, but the guard positions reset to their initial state.

Is there a way to disable the alarm before opening the safe? No. The alarm is triggered by the act of opening the safe, not by a tripwire or a camera. You cannot disable it in advance. The only way to avoid the alarm is to not open the safe, which is not an option.

Can I use the perch escape in reverse to get into the warehouse? Yes, but it is not recommended. The route is one-way: the catwalk is too high to reach from the first perch, and the drainpipe is too slippery to climb. You would need to use a different entrance, which is not covered in this walkthrough.

Does the safe code change on higher difficulty levels? No. The code digits and their locations are the same on all difficulty levels. The only difference is that guards have better vision and hearing on higher difficulties, so you need to be more careful when moving between plaques.
