Gifting a game on Steam lets you buy a title for another person instead of for yourself. You pick the game, choose the recipient from your friends list, pay for it, and Steam sends them a gift copy they can redeem. This article covers how the process works, what restrictions exist, and how to avoid common problems.

Formula

The total cost of a gifted game is the base price plus any applicable sales tax. The formula is:

Total = Price × (1 + Tax rate / 100)

Where:

  • Price – the game’s listed price in your local currency (e.g., USD).
  • Tax rate – the percentage of sales tax applied in your region (e.g., 8% means 8).
  • Total – the final amount you pay, including tax.

Worked Example

Using the default values: Price = $60, Tax rate = 8%.

  1. Convert the tax rate to a decimal: 8 / 100 = 0.08
  2. Add 1 to the decimal: 1 + 0.08 = 1.08
  3. Multiply by the price: 60 × 1.08 = 64.80

The total cost is $64.80. This matches the calculator’s output.

How Gifting Works on Steam

Steam’s gifting system is built into the store. To gift a game:

  1. Open the game’s store page while logged into your Steam account.
  2. Click “Add to Cart – you’ll see an option to “Purchase as a gift.
  3. Choose “I’d like to gift this to a friend and select the recipient from your friends list. You can also enter their email address if they aren’t on your friends list.
  4. Write a short message if you want (optional).
  5. Complete the purchase with your payment method.
  6. Steam sends the gift to the recipient. They receive a notification and can accept it, which adds the game to their library.

If the recipient already owns the game, Steam will warn you before purchase. You can also schedule a gift to arrive on a future date (e.g., for a birthday).

Regional Restrictions and Price Differences

Steam uses regional pricing – the same game can cost different amounts in different countries. To prevent abuse, Steam has regional restrictions on gifts:

  • If you buy a game in a region with lower prices, the recipient may not be able to redeem it if their region has higher prices.
  • Steam compares the gifting and receiving regions. If the price difference is too large, the gift is locked to the buyer’s region.
  • You can check a game’s regional restrictions on its store page under “Purchase for yourselfâ€ – look for a note about “Region restrictions apply.â€

If a gift is region-locked, the recipient will see an error when trying to redeem it. Steam support can sometimes help, but the safest approach is to gift only to friends in the same region or to check the game’s region availability first.

Gift Inventory and Storage

When you buy a gift, it goes into your Steam inventory (not directly to the recipient). You can then:

  • Send it immediately to a friend.
  • Keep it in your inventory and send it later.
  • Trade it (if the game is tradeable – most are, but some have trade holds).

Gifts in your inventory do not expire. However, if a game is removed from the store (e.g., delisted), an unredeemed gift may become invalid. It’s best to send gifts promptly.

Common Problems and Solutions

Users often encounter these issues when gifting:

  • Recipient already owns the game: Steam blocks the purchase and tells you. You can’t gift a duplicate copy.
  • Region lock error: The gift can’t be redeemed due to regional price differences. Solution: have the recipient use a VPN? No – that violates Steam’s terms. Instead, ask Steam Support for a refund or purchase a different game.
  • Gift not arriving: Check your email and Steam notifications. Gifts are delivered via the Steam client, not email (unless you chose email delivery).
  • Payment failure: Ensure your payment method has sufficient funds and that your billing address matches your Steam account.
  • Gift held for 30 days: New Steam accounts (less than 30 days old) may have a 30-day hold on gifts to prevent fraud. This is automatic and cannot be bypassed.

Gifting vs. Buying a Steam Key

An alternative to gifting through Steam is buying a Steam key from a third-party retailer (like Humble Bundle, Fanatical, or official key sellers). These keys are redeemed directly on Steam. Compared to gifting:

  • Price: Keys are often cheaper than Steam’s store price.
  • Region: Keys are usually region-locked too, but the lock varies by seller.
  • Safety: Only buy from reputable sellers – grey-market sites can sell stolen keys, which may be revoked.
  • Gifting: You can buy a key and send the code to anyone, regardless of Steam friendship.

Gifting through Steam is simpler and safer (no risk of revoked keys), but keys offer more flexibility and sometimes lower prices.

Costs and Payment Methods

The cost of a gifted game is the same as buying it for yourself – there’s no extra fee. You pay the game’s price plus any sales tax applied in your region. Payment methods include credit/debit cards, PayPal, Steam Wallet, and sometimes regional methods like iDEAL or Alipay.

If you have Steam Wallet funds, you can use them for gifts. Note that Steam Wallet funds are non-refundable, so make sure you’re buying the right game.

Safety and Scams

Gifting is safe when done through Steam’s official interface. However, beware of scams:

  • Never “tradeâ€ a game gift for something outside Steam (like real money) – that’s against Steam’s terms and often a scam.
  • Don’t click links from strangers claiming to send you a free game – they may be phishing sites.
  • Only accept gifts from people you know. If a friend’s account is hacked, they might send malicious links.

If you receive a suspicious gift, don’t redeem it – contact Steam Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I gift a game to someone in another country? Yes, but regional restrictions may apply. If the price difference is significant, the gift may be locked to your region and they can’t redeem it.

Can I return a gifted game? Steam’s refund policy allows refunds for gifts within 14 days of purchase if the recipient hasn’t redeemed it. If redeemed, the recipient must request a refund, and the money goes back to the original buyer.

Why is my gift on hold for 30 days? New Steam accounts (under 30 days old) have a temporary hold on gifts to prevent fraud. This is automatic; you can’t remove it.

Can I gift a game to someone who isn’t my Steam friend? Yes, you can enter their email address during checkout. They’ll receive an email with a link to redeem the gift.

Do gifts expire? No, gifts in your inventory don’t expire. However, if a game is delisted from Steam, an unredeemed gift may become invalid.

Can I get a refund on a gifted game I bought by mistake? Yes, if you haven’t sent it yet, you can refund it within 14 days of purchase. If you’ve sent it and the recipient hasn’t redeemed it, you can also refund it.
