Google Files Go (now simply called Files by Google) is a file management app for Android that helps you free up space, find files faster, and share files offline. You enter your storage usage and sharing preferences, and the app gives you a clean overview of what is taking up space and how to clear it safely.
Formula
The calculator above works out two simple things:
- Percentage to free = (Free space needed ÷ Storage used) × 100
- Storage left = Storage used − Free space needed
Variables:
- t = total storage currently used (GB)
- d = amount of space you want to free up (GB)
This is basic arithmetic, but it is useful when you are planning how many photos, videos, or app caches to delete.
Worked Example
Using the defaults: you have 10 GB of storage used and you want to free 2 GB.
- Percentage = (2 ÷ 10) × 100 = 20%
- Storage left = 10 − 2 = 8 GB
So you need to clear 20% of your current usage, and you will have 8 GB left after doing so.
What Is Google Files Go?
Google Files Go was launched in 2017 as a lightweight file manager for low-end Android devices. It was later renamed to Files by Google and became the default file manager on many Android phones. The app is free, does not show ads (though it sometimes suggests apps to clean), and works on almost any Android device running Android 5.0 or higher.
The main features are:
- Clean – find and delete junk files, duplicate photos, and old app caches
- Browse – see all your files in one place, including downloads, images, videos, audio, and documents
- Share – send files to nearby devices without using mobile data (similar to Apple’s AirDrop)
- Backup – back up photos to Google Photos directly from the app
How Does It Work?
The app scans your phone’s internal storage and SD card. It categorizes files by type and flags items that are safe to delete, such as:
- App cache files
- Residual files from uninstalled apps
- Downloaded files that you have not opened in a while
- Blurry or duplicate photos
- Large videos or files you may have forgotten about
You can review each suggestion before deleting. The app never deletes anything automatically without your confirmation, except when you use the “Clean button, which still asks you to confirm each category.
How to Choose What to Delete
When you open the Clean tab, you will see a list of suggested items. Each suggestion shows how much space you will free. To choose wisely:
- Start with Junk files – these are almost always safe to delete (app caches, temporary files).
- Check Duplicate photos – the app shows similar images side by side so you can keep the best one.
- Review Large files – these are often videos or PDFs you may have forgotten about.
- Be careful with Downloads – some may be important, so open them before deleting.
Common Problems and Fixes
Users sometimes report that the app does not show all files or that it takes a long time to scan. Here are the most common issues:
- Files not showing – make sure you have granted storage permission. Go to Settings → Apps → Files → Permissions and enable Storage.
- Slow scanning – if you have a huge number of files, the first scan may take a few minutes. Subsequent scans are faster.
- Cannot share with iPhone – Google Files Go uses a peer-to-peer protocol that is not compatible with iOS. For cross-platform sharing, use a cloud service or a USB cable.
- App keeps crashing – update the app from the Play Store, or clear the app’s cache (not your phone’s storage, just the app’s own cache) from Settings → Apps → Files → Storage → Clear Cache.
How It Compares to Other File Managers
There are many file managers on Android, but Files by Google stands out because it is free, ad-free, and made by Google. Other popular options include Solid Explorer, ES File Explorer (now ad-heavy), and Amaze (open-source).
Compared to those:
- Files by Google – best for cleaning and sharing, but limited advanced features like FTP or cloud storage integration.
- Solid Explorer – has a dual-pane view and supports cloud drives, but costs money after a trial.
- Amaze – free and open-source, but less polished and lacks the cleaning features.
If you just want to free space and share files, Files by Google is usually enough. If you need root access or advanced server connections, you need a dedicated file manager.
Costs and Safety
Files by Google is completely free. It does not contain ads, and Google does not sell your personal files. The app does collect some usage data for improving the product, but it does not upload your files to Google servers.
One thing to be aware of: the “Share feature uses Wi-Fi Direct, which means it does not use your mobile data, but it does require both devices to have the app installed and to be within close range (usually within about 10 meters).
Alternatives
If you do not want to use Google’s app, here are some alternatives:
- Files by Google – the easiest for most people.
- Google Drive – good for backing up files to the cloud, but not for cleaning local storage.
- Solid Explorer – for power users.
- SD Maid – focuses on cleaning junk files, but the free version has limited features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Files by Google safe to use? Yes, it is an official Google app. It does not upload your files to the cloud, and it only suggests deletions that you must approve.
Does Files by Google work on iPhones? No, it is only available on Android. iPhones have their own built-in Files app.
Will deleting cache files break my apps? No, cache files are temporary data that apps can recreate. You may have to log in again to some apps, but your data is not lost.
How do I share files with someone nearby? Open the Share tab, select the files, and the app will create a hotspot. The other person opens the app on their phone and taps “Receive. Both phones need to be in the same room.
Can I recover files deleted by accident? If you delete a file from the “Clean section, it is gone permanently. There is no recycle bin in the app. For important files, back them up to Google Drive or another cloud service first.
