Yes, Google has permanently slashed the price of its best Pixel Buds, the Pixel Buds Pro, from $199 to $149 in the US. This article explains the new pricing, what you get at that price, and how the Buds compare to other premium earbuds.
Formula
The calculator above computes your average pace and speed for a run or ride. You enter the total time in minutes and the distance in kilometers. The formulas are:
- Pace (min/km) = Total time (min) ÷ Distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Total time (min) ÷ 60)
Variables: t = time in minutes, d = distance in kilometers. The pace is the number of minutes it takes to cover one kilometer; the speed is how many kilometers you cover in one hour.
Worked Example
Using the default values (50 minutes, 10 km):
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
So you run at a 5:00 min/km pace, which equals 12 km/h. The calculator rounds to two decimals for both outputs.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this tool to convert a single run or ride into a pace and speed you can compare across workouts. Runners often track pace in min/km, while cyclists use km/h. This calculator bridges both. It also helps you set realistic goals: if you want to finish a 10k in under 50 minutes, you need to hold a pace faster than 5:00 min/km.
How to Read the Result
The first output, pace, is the number you see on most running apps. A lower pace number means faster. The second output, speed, is more common for cycling. For example, a 30-minute 5k gives a pace of 6:00 min/km and a speed of 10 km/h. If you run on a treadmill at 10 km/h, that’s the same effort as a 6:00 min/km outdoor pace (assuming no incline).
Common Mistakes
- Mixing units: If you enter distance in miles but time in minutes, the pace will be in min/mile, not min/km. Convert miles to km (multiply by 1.60934) first.
- Using seconds: This calculator expects minutes. If your time is 50:30, enter 50.5, not 50.30.
- Rounding too early: If you round the pace to 5.0 and then compute speed, you get 12.0, but the calculator uses the exact time and distance, so it’s more accurate.
Limitations of the Formula
This is a simple average. It doesn’t account for elevation gain, stops, or uneven effort. Your actual pace varies with hills and wind. For interval training, you’d want per-split data, not an average. Also, the formula assumes you maintain a constant speed, which is rarely true, but the average is still useful for planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the min/km value by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km is about 8:03 min/mile. Or use the speed: 12 km/h is about 7.46 mph.
What is a good pace for a beginner?
A common beginner 5k pace is around 7:00–8:00 min/km (8.5–7.5 km/h). But “good depends on age, fitness, and experience. Focus on effort, not a number.
Can I use this for walking?
Yes. Walking pace is typically 10–15 min/km. The same formula works; just enter your walking time and distance.
Why does the calculator show “Cannot compute?
That appears if the distance is zero or negative, which would make the pace infinite. Check your inputs.
Is speed or pace more important for training?
Runners usually train by pace because it’s easier to gauge effort on a track. Cyclists use speed. For most people, pace is more useful for running; speed is more intuitive for cycling.
How do I set a target pace for a race?
Take your goal time in minutes and divide by the race distance in km. For a 1:45 half marathon (21.1 km), the pace is 105 ÷ 21.1 = 4.98 min/km, so about 5:00 min/km.
