Groot Skins in Marvel Rivals: Every Costume

Card No. 06·20587 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This article lists every Groot costume currently available in Marvel Rivals, including the default, seasonal, and purchasable skins. You’ll also learn how to unlock each one, what they cost, and which are no longer obtainable.

Default Costume

Every character in Marvel Rivals starts with a basic appearance, and Groot is no exception. His default skin is called Groot (the same name as the hero). It shows him as the classic tree-like Guardian of the Galaxy with brown bark, green moss-like accents, and glowing orange eyes. This is the look you see in the game’s promotional art and on the character select screen.

You don’t need to do anything to unlock this costume—it’s available from the moment you start playing. It also serves as the base model for all other Groot skins, meaning every alternate costume changes his overall silhouette, texture, or color scheme but keeps the same basic body shape.

Seasonal and Battle Pass Skins

Marvel Rivals uses a seasonal battle pass system called the Lux pass. Each season introduces new skins for a handful of characters, and Groot has appeared in two of them so far.

  • Monster Jam – This was the Season 1 battle pass skin. It turns Groot into a more aggressive, spiky version of himself with darker bark, glowing red accents, and jagged thorns. The design fits the season’s “darkâ€ theme.
  • Groot’s Spring Sprout – Released during a limited-time spring event, this skin gives Groot a pastel color scheme with pink and yellow flowers growing out of his shoulders. It’s one of the few skins that changes his usual brown-and-green palette.

Battle pass skins are typically exclusive to that season. Once the season ends, they usually don’t return to the store, so if you missed them, you may not be able to get them again.

Store Skins and Bundles

Outside of battle passes, Marvel Rivals sells individual skins in the in-game store. These are available for real money or premium currency (Lattice). Groot has had two store-exclusive skins:

  • Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – This skin is based on his appearance in the 2023 movie. It’s more detailed than the default, with a sleeker bark texture and brighter orange eyes. It was sold as a standalone skin and also as part of a bundle that included a spray and an emote.
  • Woodland Guardian – A nature-themed skin with green leaves and a lighter brown trunk. It was released as a “special offerâ€ and is sometimes rotated back into the store.

Store skins are not permanent—they appear for a limited time and then disappear. However, unlike battle pass skins, they can come back later. The game doesn’t have a fixed schedule, so you have to check the store regularly.

How to Unlock and Purchase

Unlocking a Groot skin depends on where it comes from:

  1. Battle pass skins – You need to progress through the Lux pass by earning XP from matches and completing challenges. The skin is usually at a higher tier, so you may need to play several hours to reach it.
  2. Store skins – You buy them directly with Lattice (premium currency) or sometimes with Units (the free currency earned from achievements). Prices vary, but most skins cost around 1,400 Lattice (roughly $14 USD). Bundles with extra items cost more.
  3. Event skins – These are often tied to limited-time events. You usually need to complete event challenges or buy them during the event window.

If you’re patient, you can earn Units by completing weekly challenges and leveling up your profile. However, most Groot skins require at least some real money purchase.

How to Choose a Groot Skin

Since all skins are cosmetic, the choice comes down to personal preference. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Visibility – Some skins have brighter colors (like Spring Sprout) that make you easier to see, which can be a disadvantage in a shooter. Darker skins (like Monster Jam) blend in better with shadows.
  • Animation changes – Some skins change the look of Groot’s abilities, like the vine projectiles or the tree wall. If you want a fresh visual feel, check gameplay videos first.
  • Rarity – If you care about showing off, battle pass skins are rarer because they’re time-limited. Store skins are more common since they can return.
  • Price – If you’re on a budget, the default skin is free, and event skins sometimes cost less than store ones.

There is no gameplay advantage to any skin. They all have the same hitbox and animations.

Common Problems and Misconceptions

One common question is whether Groot has a “legendary skin. As of now, he does not. Legendary skins in Marvel Rivals have unique voice lines and effects, but Groot’s skins are all Epic or Rare quality.

Another misconception is that you can unlock all skins by playing free. That’s only true for the default and maybe a few event skins. Most Groot skins require Lattice, which costs real money. The free currency (Units) can be earned, but it’s slow and usually not enough for a full skin.

If you see a Groot skin in the store but don’t have enough currency, it may disappear before you can earn more. There’s no “hold feature, so you have to decide whether to buy it immediately or risk missing it.

Comparison with Other Characters

Groot has fewer skins than some other heroes. For example, characters like Iron Man or Spider-Man have had more store and battle pass skins because they’re more popular. Groot’s current total is four (including default), while some characters already have six or seven.

That could change in future seasons. The developers have been adding new skins for less popular characters over time, so Groot will likely get more costumes eventually.

Costs and Value

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to pay for Groot skins:

  • Default – Free
  • Monster Jam – Part of Season 1 Lux pass (costs 1,000 Lattice to unlock the pass, but you get other rewards too)
  • Groot’s Spring Sprout – Event skin, often priced around 1,200 Lattice
  • Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – Store skin, ~1,400 Lattice
  • Woodland Guardian – Store skin, ~1,400 Lattice

If you want all of them, you’d need roughly 5,000 Lattice (about $50 USD) plus the battle pass cost. That’s a lot for cosmetics, so many players pick just one or two favorites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Groot get more skins in the future? Almost certainly. The game is live-service, and new seasons add content regularly. Groot is a popular character, so he’s likely to get more skins, but there’s no official schedule.

Can I get old Groot skins if I missed them? Battle pass skins are usually gone forever. Store skins might return, but it’s unpredictable. Your best bet is to check the store every week.

Do Groot skins change his abilities? No. Skins are purely visual. They don’t affect hitboxes, damage, or any gameplay stats.

What is the rarest Groot skin? The rarest is probably Monster Jam because it was only available in Season 1’s battle pass. Once that season ended, it became unobtainable.

Can I earn Lattice for free? Yes, but slowly. You get some Lattice from the battle pass and from leveling up, but it’s not enough to buy every skin. You’ll likely need to spend real money for multiple skins.

Are there any Groot skins that are free? The default skin is free. Event skins sometimes have free unlock paths through challenges, but most require purchase.
