How to Clean Shokz Headphones After Sweaty Runs

Card No. 06·18384 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Regular cleaning after sweaty runs keeps your Shokz headphones hygienic, prevents buildup in the charging port, and extends their lifespan. This guide covers the safe way to wipe down the ear hooks, dry the speakers, and care for the battery contacts so your next run starts with fresh, functional gear.

What You’ll Need

  • Soft, lint-free microfiber cloth (or a clean, dry cotton cloth)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% or less) – optional, for disinfecting
  • Cotton swabs (Q-tips) – for tight spots
  • Toothpick or soft-bristled brush (like a clean, dry toothbrush) – for the charging port
  • Clean water – for rinsing if needed
  • Small bowl or cup – to hold water if you rinse
  • A dry, well-ventilated area for air drying

Step-by-Step

  1. Turn off and disconnect. Power down your Shokz and unplug any charging cable. This prevents accidental damage and makes the surfaces easier to handle.
  2. Remove ear cushions (if applicable). Some models have removable silicone ear tips or cushions. If yours do, gently pull them off and set them aside. Wash them separately with mild soap and water, then let them air dry completely.
  3. Wipe down the main body and ear hooks. Dampen a microfiber cloth with a little water (or a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution) – it should be barely damp, not dripping. Gently wipe the entire surface, paying extra attention to the areas that touch your skin: the ear hooks, the area behind the speakers, and the band that rests on your head.
  4. Clean the speaker grilles carefully. The speaker mesh can collect sweat and earwax. Use a dry cotton swab or a soft-bristled brush to gently sweep away any debris. Do not press hard or use anything sharp – you can damage the mesh.
  5. Dry the charging port. This is the most critical step. Sweat can corrode the metal pins. Use a dry cotton swab to carefully absorb any moisture. If you see visible buildup, use a toothpick or the tip of a soft brush to gently dislodge it. Let the port air dry for at least 30 minutes before charging.
  6. Wipe the charging contacts. If the metal contacts on the headphones or the charging cable look tarnished, gently rub them with a dry microfiber cloth. Avoid using water or alcohol directly on the contacts – if you do, make sure they are completely dry before charging.
  7. Air dry completely. Place the headphones on a dry, clean towel in a well-ventilated area. Let them sit for at least 1–2 hours (or overnight if they were very sweaty) to ensure all moisture has evaporated, especially inside the ear hooks and charging port.
  8. Reattach ear cushions. Once everything is dry, snap the ear cushions back on. Make sure they are seated firmly.
  9. Store properly. Keep your Shokz in a cool, dry place, ideally in their case or a cloth pouch. Avoid leaving them in a hot car or direct sunlight, which can warp the plastic.

Common Mistakes

  • Using too much water. Dripping water can seep into the internals, causing short circuits or corrosion. Always use a barely damp cloth.
  • Charging while wet. Even if the port looks dry, moisture can hide inside. Charging a wet device can damage the battery and the port. Always wait until fully dry.
  • Submerging the headphones. Shokz are not fully waterproof. Do not rinse them under a tap or soak them in water. Only the removable ear cushions (if any) can be washed separately.
  • Using harsh chemicals. Bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners can strip the coating and damage the plastic. Stick to mild soap, water, or diluted isopropyl alcohol.
  • Scratching the speaker mesh. Poking the mesh with a pin, paperclip, or toothpick can tear it. Use only soft brushes or cotton swabs.
  • Ignoring the charging port. Sweat that dries in the port can form a crust that prevents charging. Clean it regularly, not just when it stops working.

Tips

  • Clean after every sweaty run. A quick 30-second wipe down prevents buildup. Don’t wait for visible grime.
  • Use a sweatband or cap. Wearing a thin headband or running cap can absorb sweat before it runs down to the ear hooks, reducing the amount that reaches the electronics.
  • Keep a microfiber cloth in your gym bag. That way you can wipe them down immediately after your run, before sweat dries.
  • Let them air out before storing. If you can’t clean them right away, at least let them sit on a towel to dry before putting them in a case. A damp, closed case is a breeding ground for bacteria and odors.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for the port. A dry, clean toothbrush is excellent for gently brushing out dust and dried sweat from the charging port without scratching the metal.

Troubleshooting

  • Charging issues after cleaning. If the headphones don’t charge, the port may still be damp or have residue. Wait another hour, then use a dry cotton swab and a toothpick to gently clean the port again. Check the charging cable’s contacts too – wipe them with a dry cloth. If it still doesn’t charge, the port may be corroded; contact Shokz support.
  • Muffled sound or low volume. This usually means the speaker mesh is clogged. Use a dry soft brush to gently sweep the mesh. If that doesn’t help, the speakers may have water damage – place the headphones in a dry, warm (not hot) area for 24 hours and try again.
  • Odor that won’t go away. If the ear cushions smell even after cleaning, soak them in a mild soapy water solution for 10 minutes, then rinse and air dry. If the smell persists, you may need to replace the ear cushions.
  • Skin irritation. If you get a rash where the headphones touch, you may be having a reaction to sweat residue or the material itself. Clean more thoroughly with alcohol, and consider hypoallergenic ear cushions if available for your model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use disinfectant wipes on my Shokz?

Yes, but use wipes that are alcohol-based (70% or less) and free of bleach. Wring them out first so they’re not dripping, then wipe down the surfaces. Avoid getting the wipes near the speaker mesh or charging port.

How often should I clean my Shokz?

After every sweaty run, at minimum do a quick dry wipe. A deeper clean (including the port) once a week or after every few runs is recommended if you run regularly.

Are Shokz waterproof?

No, they are sweat and water-resistant (IP67 on many models), but not fully waterproof. You can wear them in rain and heavy sweat, but you cannot submerge them. Always dry them thoroughly after exposure.

Can I wash the ear hooks in the sink?

No. The ear hooks contain the battery and wiring. Do not run water over them. Only the removable ear cushions (if your model has them) can be washed separately.

What should I do if the charging port has white crusty buildup?

That’s dried sweat and salts. Use a dry toothpick or a soft brush to gently scrape it away. Then wipe with a dry cotton swab. If the crust is stubborn, you can dip the swab in a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol, but make sure it’s completely dry before charging.

Can I use a hairdryer to speed up drying?

No. Heat can damage the plastic and internal components. Always air dry at room temperature. If you’re in a hurry, place them near a fan or in a dry, warm (not hot) spot.
