This guide walks you through the entire gem system in Enshrouded version 1.0: where to find gems, how to farm them efficiently, and exactly how to socket them into your gear for powerful bonuses. You’ll need to have unlocked the Hunter’s crafting bench and have a basic understanding of the game’s building and crafting mechanics before you start.
What You’ll Need
- A character at least level 10 (higher levels make farming easier)
- Access to the Kindlewastes and Nomad Highlands regions (gems are found in these late-game areas)
- A pickaxe (any tier works, but a higher-tier pickaxe mines faster)
- The Hunter NPC unlocked at your base (she crafts the Gem Socket tool)
- Materials for crafting the Gem Socket: 5x String, 3x Copper Bar, 1x Sharpened Bone
- Gems themselves (see farming steps below)
Step-by-Step
- Unlock the Hunter. If you haven’t already, find the Hunter’s ancient spire in the Springlands (east of the starting area). Complete her quest to bring her back to your base. She is essential for both gem crafting and socketing.
- Reach the gem-bearing regions. Gems in Enshrouded 1.0 are primarily found in the Kindlewastes (the desert area to the east) and the Nomad Highlands (the mountainous area to the north). You’ll need to have unlocked these areas by completing the main story quests that open the ancient spires there.
- Farm gems from mining nodes. In these regions, look for small, shiny, colored crystals embedded in rock faces and cliffs. These are gem nodes. Use your pickaxe to mine them. You’ll typically get 1-3 rough gems per node. The most common types are Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and Topaz.
- Farm gems from enemy drops. Certain enemies in these areas, especially the Vukah shamans and the larger melee enemies, have a chance to drop gems when killed. Farm camps and ruins for a steady supply.
- Convert rough gems to cut gems. Return to your base and talk to the Hunter. She has a crafting menu for gems. You’ll need to convert rough gems into cut gems before they can be socketed. For example, 3x Rough Ruby becomes 1x Cut Ruby.
- Craft the Gem Socket tool. Still at the Hunter, you’ll find a recipe for the Gem Socket. This is a consumable tool used to open a socket on a piece of gear. Craft one for each socket you want to add.
- Open a socket on your gear. Open your inventory and select the piece of armor or weapon you want to socket. There should be a prompt to use the Gem Socket. This will consume the tool and add a socket slot to the item. Note: you can only add a socket to items that don’t already have one (most items have 0 or 1 socket).
- Insert the gem. With the socket open, go to the item’s details and select the empty socket. Choose the cut gem you want to insert from your inventory. The gem’s bonus is applied immediately.
- Repeat for other gear pieces. You can socket each piece of armor and your weapon. Plan your gems based on your build (e.g., Ruby for melee damage, Sapphire for mana, Emerald for stamina).
Common Mistakes
- Mining the wrong nodes. Not all shiny rocks are gem nodes. Regular ore nodes (copper, iron, etc.) look different and won’t drop gems. Look for the distinct, brightly colored crystal clusters.
- Forgetting to cut rough gems. You cannot socket rough gems. Always convert them at the Hunter first. This is the #1 mistake players make.
- Using Gem Socket on an item that already has a socket. The tool only works on items with zero sockets. If you try to use it on an item with a socket, it will fail and waste the tool.
- Not checking the gem’s bonus. Each gem type gives a different bonus. Make sure you’re socketing the gem that matches your build. Don’t just throw in any gem you have.
Tips
- Farm in the Kindlewastes during the day. The desert is less dangerous during daylight, and you can spot gem nodes more easily against the sand.
- Use a pickaxe with a mining speed enchantment. If you have a pickaxe with the “Efficient” or “Swift” enchantment, it will speed up your gem farming significantly.
- Build a small base near a gem-rich area. Set up a temporary shelter with a fast-travel beacon near the Nomad Highlands to cut down on travel time.
- Combine gem farming with other activities. While farming gems, also collect other resources like alchemical base, resin, and metal scraps. You’ll need these for crafting the Gem Socket and other items.
- Don’t socket early-game gear. Save your gems and Gem Sockets for high-tier gear (level 20+ or legendary items). You’ll replace lower-level gear quickly, and sockets are wasted on them.
Troubleshooting
I can’t find any gem nodes. Make sure you’re in the correct regions. Gems only spawn in Kindlewastes and Nomad Highlands. If you’re still early in the game, you won’t see any. Also, check the cliffs and high ledges – nodes often spawn on vertical surfaces.
The Hunter doesn’t have the Gem Socket recipe. Ensure you’ve progressed her questline far enough. She unlocks the gem crafting and socketing after you’ve completed her initial quests and have reached a certain level. If the recipe is missing, double-check that you have the required materials in your inventory – the recipe may be hidden until you have the components.
The Gem Socket tool won’t work on my item. This usually means the item already has a socket. Check the item’s details – if it shows a socket symbol, it’s already socketed. You cannot add a second socket to an item. Also, make sure the item is not equipped? Actually, you can socket equipped items, but try unequipping it first if you’re having issues.
I inserted a gem but don’t see the bonus. The bonus is applied to your character stats, not shown as a tooltip on the item. Check your character sheet (press C) to see your updated stats. For example, if you socketed a Ruby, your melee damage should increase.
I can’t remove a gem. As of version 1.0, there is no way to remove a socketed gem without destroying it. Be absolutely sure you want to socket a gem before you do it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can I find gems in Enshrouded?
A: Gems are found in the Kindlewastes and Nomad Highlands regions. Mine the small, colored crystal nodes on cliffs and in caves, or kill Vukah enemies in those areas.
Q: How do I socket a gem?
A: First, craft a Gem Socket at the Hunter NPC. Then, open your inventory, select the item you want to socket, and use the Gem Socket to add a socket. Finally, insert a cut gem into the new socket.
Q: Can I remove a gem after socketing it?
A: No, there is no way to remove a socketed gem without destroying it. Plan your sockets carefully.
Q: What are the different gem types and their bonuses?
A: Ruby increases melee damage, Sapphire increases max mana, Emerald increases stamina, and Topaz increases magic damage. There are also rare gems like Diamond that provide defense bonuses.
Q: Do I need to cut rough gems before socketing?
A: Yes, rough gems must be converted to cut gems at the Hunter NPC before they can be socketed. 3 rough gems of the same type make 1 cut gem.
Q: Can I socket gems into any weapon or armor?
A: Most weapons and armor have at least one socket slot. Some items have zero sockets and cannot be socketed at all. You can only add one socket to an item that already has zero sockets.
