How to Get Eggs in Pokémon GO and Hatch Them

Card No. 06·24496 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Pokémon GO Eggs are collected through gameplay and hatched by walking the distance shown on each Egg. To get one, check your Egg storage, then use a source such as a PokéStop, Gift, or weekly Adventure Sync reward; you will also need an incubator to start hatching it.

What You’ll Need

  • A Pokémon GO account and an internet connection.
  • Space in your Egg storage. Eggs occupy slots in the Eggs tab of your Pokémon storage.
  • An incubator: every Trainer has an unlimited-use incubator, and additional incubators can be obtained through gameplay or the in-game shop.
  • A way to travel the required distance on foot. Keep the app and location permissions configured so the game can record progress.

Step-by-Step

  1. Check your Egg storage. Open the main menu, tap Pokémon, and select the Eggs tab. Look for an empty slot. If it is full, you will need to hatch or otherwise manage existing Eggs before collecting another standard Egg.
  2. Choose a way to receive an Egg. Spin the Photo Disc at a PokéStop or Gym; these can award Eggs when a slot is open, though an Egg is not guaranteed every spin. You can also open a Gift from a friend for a possible 7 km Egg. Some special Eggs, including 12 km Eggs, have specific encounter requirements, such as defeating a Team GO Rocket Leader, and require an open slot. Weekly Adventure Sync rewards may also include Eggs if you meet the relevant distance and storage conditions.
  3. Use a source that fits the Egg you want. A PokéStop or Gym can provide common distance-based Eggs, while Gifts are the usual source for 7 km Eggs. The pool of Pokémon that can hatch from each Egg type can change with events and game updates. Check the Egg’s hatch pool in the game or current event information rather than assuming a particular Pokémon is guaranteed.
  4. Collect the Egg and confirm it appears. After spinning a disc or opening a Gift, check the Eggs tab. If no Egg appears, the source may not have awarded one, or you may have had no free slot. Adventure Sync rewards are given on the weekly reset after qualifying activity; check the in-game weekly summary and keep an Egg slot open before the reward is issued.
  5. Put an Egg in an incubator. Tap the Egg in the Eggs tab, then choose Incubate and select an available incubator. The unlimited-use incubator can hatch one Egg at a time. Limited-use incubators also hatch one at a time and are consumed after their stated number of uses. An Egg does not gain hatch distance until it is incubating.
  6. Walk the displayed distance. Walk with the game open, or enable Adventure Sync and grant the required activity and location permissions so eligible distance can count while the app is closed. The game may not register every step or all movement, and distance updates can be delayed. The displayed distance is the requirement; it can vary by Egg type.
  7. Open the hatched Egg. When the distance requirement is met, the game announces the hatch. Follow the prompt or open the Eggs tab to see the Pokémon. The Egg is removed from storage and its incubator becomes available again, unless it was a limited-use incubator with no uses remaining.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting every spin to give an Egg: PokéStop and Gym spins can award items or Pokémon-related rewards instead. Try another eligible source if you have space.
  • Opening Gifts with full Egg storage: Gift Eggs are only possible when the required Egg slot is free. Make room before opening the Gift if you are aiming for one.
  • Forgetting to incubate: Owning an Egg is not enough; select an incubator before walking for its hatch distance.
  • Assuming a particular hatch is guaranteed: Egg distance indicates the broad hatch category, not a promise of one species. Hatch pools and event availability can change.
  • Relying on vehicle travel: Pokémon GO limits distance credit when it detects movement that is too fast for normal walking. Do not use a moving vehicle to try to hatch Eggs; play only when it is safe and legal to do so.
  • Confusing Egg storage with Pokémon storage: Egg slots are part of your Pokémon storage, so a full storage capacity can prevent receiving new Eggs.

Tips

  • Use the unlimited-use incubator for regular hatching and save limited-use incubators for Eggs or situations where you particularly want to shorten the number of walks.
  • Check your available slots before spinning a PokéStop, opening Gifts, or reaching a weekly Adventure Sync reward. A free slot does not guarantee an Egg, but it removes a common reason one cannot be received.
  • Keep Pokémon GO updated and enable Adventure Sync in the game’s settings if you want eligible walking distance to count while the app is closed. Follow the prompts to allow the necessary phone permissions.
  • Walk at a steady, ordinary pace and periodically check the Eggs tab for distance updates. If the game is slow to refresh, give it time or reopen the app while connected.
  • Read the current event details and the hatch-pool information shown in the game. Special events can change which Pokémon are available from Eggs or how long certain Eggs take to hatch.
  • Egg hatching is random within the available pool. If you are trying for a particular Pokémon, check whether it is currently listed for that Egg type before spending limited-use incubators.

Troubleshooting

  • No Egg after spinning: Confirm that an Egg slot was open before the spin. If space was available, spin another PokéStop or Gym later; a single spin is not a guaranteed Egg source.
  • No Egg from a Gift: Check that you opened the Gift rather than only sending one, and that you had a free Egg slot at the time. Gift rewards are not guaranteed to include an Egg.
  • Adventure Sync reward did not include an Egg: Check the weekly summary for the distance recorded and whether you had open storage when rewards were issued. Make sure Adventure Sync and its phone permissions are enabled before walking; activity may not be credited retroactively.
  • Hatch distance is not increasing: Confirm that the Egg is in an incubator, check that location services and Adventure Sync are allowed, and ensure the game can access the network. Walk at a normal pace, then reopen the app and allow time for distance to update. Phone battery-saving settings can also restrict background activity.
  • The game says storage is full: Hatch Eggs already in incubators, or make room by managing Pokémon storage. Check the Eggs tab and the total storage limit before trying another source.
  • The hatch pool seems different: Egg contents can rotate during events and updates. Use the hatch information currently shown in the game rather than relying on an old list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get Eggs in Pokémon GO?
Spin PokéStop or Gym Photo Discs, open eligible Gifts for a possible 7 km Egg, meet the requirements for special Eggs, or claim eligible weekly Adventure Sync rewards. You need an open Egg slot.

Can you get Eggs while your storage is full?
No. Make an Egg slot available before collecting from a source. A spin or Gift may still provide other rewards, but it will not add an Egg when there is no room.

How do you hatch an Egg?
Select it in the Eggs tab, choose an incubator, and walk the distance displayed on the Egg. It must be incubating for distance to count.

Do you need the app open to hatch Eggs?
No, if Adventure Sync is enabled and the game has the required permissions, eligible distance may count while the app is closed. Distance tracking is not guaranteed for every activity.

Can you choose which Pokémon hatches?
No. The hatch is random from the Egg’s current pool. Check the in-game hatch information, especially during events, for the Pokémon that may be available.

Can you hatch Eggs by riding in a car?
Distance may not count when the game detects travel that is too fast. Do not play while driving; hatch Eggs by walking safely.
