Link Epic Games and Steam Accounts: Step-by-Step

Card No. 06·27222 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Linking your Epic Games and Steam accounts lets you carry your progress, purchases, and friends across both platforms in games that support cross-progression, like Rocket League or Fortnite. It also means you can log in to Epic Games with your Steam credentials and see your Steam friends in Epic titles. Before you start, make sure you have access to the email addresses associated with both accounts and that you can log into each one—you’ll need to verify both during the process.

What You’ll Need

  • An active Epic Games account (if you don’t have one, you can create it for free during the linking process).
  • An active Steam account with a valid login.
  • Access to the email inboxes for both accounts (for verification codes).
  • A web browser (desktop or mobile works, but desktop is easier).

Step-by-Step

  1. Log in to your Epic Games account. Go to epicgames.com and click Sign In in the top-right corner. Use your usual Epic login (email, password, or an already connected platform).
  2. Open Account Settings. Once logged in, hover over your display name in the top-right and click Account. This takes you to the Epic Games account management page.
  3. Go to the Connections tab. In the left sidebar, click Connections. You’ll see a list of platforms you can link, including Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and others.
  4. Click “Connect” next to Steam. Find the Steam icon under “Accounts” or “Apps” and click the Connect button. A new window will open asking you to sign in to Steam.
  5. Sign in to Steam and authorize. Enter your Steam username and password (and confirm any Steam Guard code sent to your email or mobile app). Then click Sign In. You’ll see a page asking if you want to allow Epic Games to access your Steam account—click Allow.
  6. Confirm the link on Epic. After authorizing, you’ll be redirected back to Epic’s site. You may see a message asking you to confirm that you want to link this Steam account. Click Link Account or Confirm.
  7. Check for a confirmation email. Epic may send a verification email to the address on your Epic account. Open it and click the Verify Email link if required. This step ensures the link is secure.
  8. Verify the link is active. Return to the Connections page. Under Steam, you should now see your Steam username and a Disconnect button. That means the link is successful.

Common Mistakes

  • Linking the wrong Steam account. If you have multiple Steam accounts, double-check the username shown in the authorization pop-up before clicking Allow. Linking the wrong one can cause headaches later.
  • Skipping the email verification. Some users think the process is done after clicking Allow, but Epic often sends a verification email. If you don’t click the link in that email, the connection may not fully complete.
  • Assuming it links all games automatically. Linking accounts only enables cross-progression for games that specifically support it. It doesn’t merge your game libraries—you still own games separately on each platform.
  • Linking an Epic account that already has a different Steam linked. You can only have one Steam account linked to an Epic account. If you previously linked another Steam account, you must disconnect it first (but be aware that disconnecting may affect game progress).
  • Using a temporary email or one you can’t access. If you lose access to the email on your Epic account, you won’t be able to complete verification or recover the account later.

Tips

  • Link before playing cross-platform games. If you start playing a game like Rocket League on Steam without linking, your progress will be tied to that platform. Linking later can still work, but it’s cleaner to link first.
  • Use the same email for both accounts if possible. While not required, using the same email makes it easier to keep track of verification codes and reduces confusion.
  • Keep your Epic account secure. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on Epic to protect your account, especially after linking. This also gives you in-game rewards in some titles.
  • Check game-specific instructions. Some games have their own linking process (e.g., in-game menus). For those, linking via the Epic website first is still recommended, but follow the game’s guidance for cross-progression.
  • Write down which account is primary. When you link, your Epic account becomes the primary hub. If you later unlink, your Steam progress may not automatically transfer back—so note your primary account.

Troubleshooting

I clicked Connect but nothing happens. Pop-up blockers can prevent the Steam authorization window from opening. Allow pop-ups for epicgames.com and try again. Also check that you’re logged into Steam in your browser—sometimes you need to log in to Steam first.

I get an error saying “Steam account already linked to another Epic account.” This means your Steam account is already associated with a different Epic account. You have two options: log into that other Epic account and disconnect Steam, or contact Epic Support to unlink it. Do not try to create a new Epic account with the same email—that will complicate things.

I don’t receive the verification email. Check your spam or junk folder. Also confirm that the email on your Epic account is correct. If you’ve changed your email recently, log out and log back in to refresh. If the email still doesn’t arrive, wait 10–15 minutes and try again. You can also request a new verification email from the Connections page.

After linking, my game progress is missing. This usually happens if you linked a different platform account to the same Epic account, or if the game doesn’t support cross-progression. Check the game’s official FAQ for how progress is merged. In some cases, you may need to launch the game on the new platform once to trigger the merge.

I want to unlink Steam, but the button is grayed out. Epic sometimes disables unlinking for 24 hours after a link, or if you’ve recently changed your email. Wait a day and try again. Also, if you have an active ban or a pending transaction, unlinking may be blocked—contact support if it persists.

I linked the wrong Steam account. How do I fix it? If you haven’t played any games yet, you can disconnect the wrong Steam account from the Connections page and then link the correct one. However, if you’ve already played a game that uses cross-progression, disconnecting may cause progress loss. Contact Epic Support for help in that case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will linking my accounts merge my game libraries?

No. Linking only connects your identities for cross-progression and friend lists. You still own games separately on each platform. For example, buying a game on Steam does not give you the Epic version, and vice versa.

Can I link more than one Steam account to my Epic account?

No, you can only link one Steam account to an Epic account at a time. If you need to change it, you must unlink the current one first, but be aware that this may affect game data.

Do I need to link accounts for Fortnite cross-play?

Fortnite cross-play works automatically across platforms, but linking your accounts allows you to share your progression, V-Bucks, and cosmetic items between PC (Epic) and other platforms like Steam (if the game were on Steam—it isn’t currently). For most Epic games, linking is required for cross-progression.

Is linking safe? Will Epic see my Steam password?

Yes, it’s safe. You enter your Steam password on Steam’s official login page, not on Epic’s site. Epic only receives a token that lets it recognize your Steam account—it never sees your password.

What happens if I unlink my Steam account later?

Your Epic account remains, but you may lose access to any progress or items that were tied to the Steam link. Some games keep a copy of your data, but it’s not guaranteed. Always read the game’s policy before unlinking.

Can I link accounts using the Epic Games launcher instead of the website?

Yes, you can also link via the Epic Games Launcher. Open the launcher, click your profile icon in the bottom-left, select Account, and then go to Connections. The steps are the same as on the website.
