How to Log Out of Slack on Any Device

Card No. 06·48942 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Logging out of Slack is a straightforward process that secures your workspace on shared or personal devices. This guide walks you through signing out from the Slack desktop app, mobile app, and web browser, including how to fully sign out of all sessions if you are worried about a lost device.

What You’ll Need

  • Access to the Slack app (desktop, mobile, or web) you want to log out from.
  • Your login credentials if you plan to sign back in later.
  • For a full sign-out of all sessions: access to the Slack workspace settings (usually via a desktop browser).

Step-by-Step

Logging Out on the Slack Desktop App (Windows, Mac, Linux)

  1. Open the Slack app on your computer.
  2. In the top-left corner, click your workspace name (e.g., “Acme Corp”).
  3. From the dropdown menu, select Sign out of [workspace name].
  4. If you have multiple workspaces, you’ll need to repeat this for each one you want to leave.
  5. Confirm the sign-out if prompted.

Logging Out on the Slack Mobile App (iOS, Android)

  1. Open the Slack app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner (iOS) or top-right corner (Android).
  3. Tap Settings (gear icon).
  4. Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
  5. If you are signed into multiple workspaces, you’ll see a list. Tap the workspace you want to leave, then confirm.

Logging Out on the Slack Web Browser (slack.com)

  1. Go to slack.com and make sure you’re signed in.
  2. Click your workspace name in the top-left corner.
  3. Select Sign out of [workspace name] from the dropdown.
  4. If you are using a shared or public computer, also consider clearing your browser cookies after signing out for extra security.

Logging Out of All Sessions (If You Lost a Device or Suspect Unauthorized Access)

  1. Open a web browser and go to slack.com.
  2. Sign in to the workspace you want to secure.
  3. Click your workspace name in the top-left, then select Settings & administration > Workspace settings.
  4. In the left sidebar, click Manage members (or go directly to slack.com/admin).
  5. Find your own account in the member list. Click the ⋯ (more actions) menu next to your name.
  6. Select Sign out of all sessions.
  7. Confirm the action. This will log you out of every device and browser where you are signed in.

Note: If you are an admin, you can also sign out other members from the same menu, which is useful if someone left their account logged in on a shared device.

Common Mistakes

  • Only closing the browser tab or app window. This does not log you out; your session remains active and can be resumed.
  • Signing out of the wrong workspace. If you belong to multiple Slack workspaces, make sure you sign out of the one you intend to leave. The dropdown shows the workspace name clearly.
  • Forgetting to sign out of all sessions. If you only sign out on one device, your account remains active on others.
  • Clearing cookies without signing out. While this may remove local login data, it doesn’t invalidate the server-side session, so the account may still be accessible from that browser if cookies are restored.

Tips

  • Use a password manager to store your Slack credentials so you can easily sign back in after logging out.
  • If you’re on a shared computer, always use a private or incognito window for Slack to avoid leaving any trace.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your Slack account for an extra layer of security, especially if you often log in from different devices.
  • If you’re leaving a company or project, also consider deactivating your account (if you’re an admin) rather than just signing out, to prevent future access.
  • For mobile, you can also use the “Sign out of all other sessions” option in the mobile app’s settings if you want to keep only the current device active.

Troubleshooting

Can’t find the sign out option

Make sure you’re clicking the correct workspace name. In the desktop app, it’s in the top-left corner. If you’re in a full-screen mode, you may need to exit full screen to see the menu. On mobile, the sign out option is usually under Settings, not directly in the workspace switcher.

Sign out button is greyed out

This can happen if your organization has disabled self-service sign-out (uncommon). Contact your workspace admin for assistance. They can sign you out from the admin panel.

I signed out but I’m still getting notifications

Notifications may come from a different device where you’re still signed in. Check all your devices and sign out there too. Also, if you’re using the Slack mobile app, notifications can persist until you fully close the app or sign out from that device.

I can’t sign back in after logging out

Ensure you have the correct workspace URL (e.g., yourcompany.slack.com). If you forgot your password, use the “Forgot password?” link on the sign-in page. If your company uses single sign-on (SSO), you’ll need to go through your company’s identity provider.

Signing out doesn’t seem to work on the web

Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, then reload the page. If the problem persists, try a different browser or use an incognito window. If you still can’t sign out, try signing out from the Slack desktop app or mobile app instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does logging out of Slack delete my messages?

No. Logging out only ends your session on that device. All messages, files, and workspace data remain intact and will be there when you sign back in.

Can I log out of Slack remotely if I lost my phone?

Yes. Sign in to your workspace on a web browser and use the “Sign out of all sessions” option in your account settings (as described above). This will revoke access on all devices, including your lost phone.

What’s the difference between “Sign out” and “Switch workspace”?

“Sign out” ends your session entirely. “Switch workspace” lets you jump to another workspace you belong to without fully logging out—your session remains active in the background.

Will logging out remove me from the Slack workspace?

No. Logging out just ends your local session. You remain a member of the workspace and can sign back in anytime. To leave a workspace permanently, you need to deactivate your account (admin can do it, or you can if you’re the last admin).

Do I need to log out of each workspace separately?

Yes, if you are signed into multiple workspaces on the same device, you must sign out of each one individually. There is no “sign out of all” button on the standard sign-out menu.

Can I log out from the Slack mobile app without losing my drafts?

Your drafts are saved in the workspace, not on your device. When you sign back in, your drafts will still be there, but any unsent messages in progress on that device may be lost if you sign out before sending them.
