How to Record TV on a Samsung Smart TV (Schedule & Timeshift)

Card No. 06·31979 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide shows you how to record live TV on a Samsung Smart TV, including scheduling future recordings and using the timeshift feature to pause and rewind live broadcasts. You’ll need a USB drive or external hard drive connected to your TV, and the recording feature works with the TV’s built-in tuner (not for streaming apps).

What You’ll Need

  • A Samsung Smart TV (2017 model or newer, with the recording feature enabled)
  • A USB flash drive (at least 16 GB) or an external hard drive (up to 2 TB)
  • A working antenna or cable connection (for over-the-air or unencrypted cable channels)

Step-by-Step

  1. Connect your storage device. Plug the USB drive or external hard drive into one of the USB ports on the back or side of your TV. If you have multiple USB ports, use the one marked “HDD or “USB (any will work, but the dedicated one may provide more power).
  2. Format the drive. The first time you insert it, the TV will prompt you to format the device for recording. Select Format and confirm. This erases all data on the drive, so use an empty drive or back it up first. If no prompt appears, go to Settings > Device Manager > Recording and format it from there.
  3. Check the recording feature. Press the Home button on your remote, then go to Settings > Device Manager > Recording. Make sure the toggle is set to On. If you don’t see this option, your TV model may not support recording.
  4. Record the current program. While watching a live channel, press the Record button (the red circle) on your remote. The TV will start recording immediately. Press Stop (the square button) to end the recording. You can also press Pause to temporarily pause the recording and resume later.
  5. Schedule a future recording. Open the TV guide by pressing the Guide button on your remote. Navigate to the program you want to record. Press the Select (OK) button, then choose Schedule Recording or Record. You can set it to record once or every time the show airs. Confirm the date, start time, and end time (the TV will adjust if the program runs over).
  6. Use timeshift. Timeshift lets you pause live TV. While watching, press the Pause button on the remote. The TV will start buffering the broadcast to the USB drive. Press Play to resume from where you paused, and use the Rewind and Fast Forward buttons to skip through the buffer. Timeshift works automatically when you press Pause—no separate setting is needed.
  7. Watch your recordings. Press Home, then go to My Files or Recorded TV (depending on your model). Select the recording you want to watch. You can delete recordings from this menu to free up space.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a drive that’s too small. A 16 GB drive holds only a few hours of HD video. For regular recording, use at least 128 GB.
  • Not formatting the drive. If you skip the format prompt, the TV may not recognize the drive. Always format it through the TV’s menu.
  • Recording from streaming apps. The recording feature only works with the built-in tuner. You cannot record Netflix, YouTube, or other apps.
  • Unplugging the USB drive while recording. This can corrupt the drive and lose the recording. Always stop the recording first.
  • Ignoring the “Recording in progressâ€ warning. If you change channels while a recording is running, the TV may cancel the recording or switch to a different tuner. Use the “Watch another channelâ€ option if available.

Tips

  • Use a USB 3.0 drive for faster performance and fewer errors, especially with HD content.
  • Keep the drive plugged in even when not recording—timeshift and scheduled recordings need it ready.
  • Set a recording margin. In the schedule recording menu, you can add extra minutes before and after the program to avoid cutting off the start or end.
  • Check the free space before scheduling a long recording. The TV will warn you if space is low.
  • Use the “Record Seriesâ€ option to automatically record every episode of a show, but note this may fill your drive quickly.

Troubleshooting

  • “USB device not supportedâ€ error. The drive may be too large (over 2 TB) or formatted incorrectly. Try a different drive, or reformat it to NTFS or exFAT using a computer, then reinsert.
  • Recording fails to start. Check that the drive is connected and formatted. Go to Settings > Device Manager > Recording and confirm the feature is enabled. Try a different USB port.
  • Scheduled recording didn’t happen. Make sure the TV is not in Eco mode or fully powered off. The TV must be in standby or on. Also, verify the channel is not encrypted (paid channels may block recording).
  • Timeshift not working. Press Pause while watching live TV—if nothing happens, the drive may be too slow. Try a faster USB drive or reduce the number of other USB devices connected.
  • Recorded file won’t play. The file may be corrupted. Stop the recording properly, and try playing it from the “Recorded TVâ€ menu. If it fails, delete and re-record.
  • “Not enough spaceâ€ warning. Delete old recordings or use a larger drive. You can also lower the recording quality in settings if available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I record on a Samsung Smart TV without a USB drive?

No, a USB drive or external hard drive is required. The TV uses it to store recordings and for timeshift buffering.

Can I watch one channel while recording another?

Yes, if your TV has two tuners (most models do). You can record one channel and watch a different one. If only one tuner is active, you’ll see a warning.

How long can I record with a 64GB USB drive?

Roughly 10–20 hours of standard definition, or 3–6 hours of HD, depending on the bitrate. Check the TV’s storage info for an estimate.

Can I transfer recordings to a computer?

Yes, you can connect the USB drive to a computer, but the files are often in a proprietary format that may not play on other devices. Copying them for backup is fine, but playback may require the TV.

Does recording work with cable or satellite boxes?

No, the TV only records from its built-in tuner. If you use a cable box, you need to record on that box instead.

Will the TV record if I turn it off?

Yes, if you schedule a recording and put the TV in standby (not unplugged), it will wake up and record. If you unplug it or use Eco mode, it may not.
