Steam Link Setup & SteamVR Connection Guide

Card No. 06·23976 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide walks you through setting up Steam Link on a standalone VR headset (like Meta Quest) or a mobile device and connecting it to your PC’s SteamVR. You’ll get wireless PC VR streaming without a dedicated VR-ready PC, letting you play SteamVR titles from anywhere in your home. You’ll need a VR headset with Steam Link support (or a phone/tablet), a PC with Steam installed, and a strong 5GHz Wi-Fi network.

What You’ll Need

  • A PC running Windows 10/11 with Steam installed and logged in.
  • A standalone VR headset (Meta Quest 2/3/Pro) or a mobile device (Android/iOS) with Steam Link app installed.
  • A 5GHz Wi-Fi router (ideally Wi-Fi 6) with a strong signal in your play space.
  • SteamVR installed on your PC (you can download it free from Steam).
  • A wired Ethernet connection from your PC to the router is strongly recommended for best performance.

Step-by-Step

  1. Install SteamVR on your PC. Open Steam, go to Library, search for “SteamVR” and install it. This is required even if you don’t have a PC VR headset.
  2. Set up your PC for streaming. In Steam, go to Settings > Remote Play and ensure “Enable Remote Play” is checked. Also, in SteamVR settings, set the “Streaming” quality to your preference (Auto is fine).
  3. Install Steam Link on your headset. On your Quest, open the App Lab or the official Meta store and search for “Steam Link”. Install it. On a phone/tablet, get it from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  4. Connect your headset to the same network. Make sure your headset/device is on the same 5GHz Wi-Fi network as your PC. If possible, set your PC to use a wired Ethernet connection to the router.
  5. Launch Steam Link. Open the Steam Link app on your headset or device. It will scan for your PC on the network. If it doesn’t find it, tap the “PC” icon and enter your PC’s IP address (you can find this in Windows by typing “ipconfig” in Command Prompt).
  6. Pair your PC. When your PC appears, select it. A 4-digit PIN will appear on your headset. On your PC, a Steam window will pop up asking for this PIN. Enter it to link the devices.
  7. Start streaming. Once paired, you’ll see your Steam library in the Steam Link interface. Select any VR game and it will launch SteamVR automatically on your PC and stream to your headset.
  8. Adjust settings for performance. In the Steam Link app, go to Settings and adjust the bitrate, resolution, and refresh rate based on your network. Start with Auto and lower if you experience lag.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi – This will cause terrible lag and stuttering. Always use 5GHz or better.
  • PC not on Ethernet – Streaming works best when the PC is hardwired. If your PC is on Wi-Fi, even on 5GHz, you’ll likely get performance issues.
  • Not installing SteamVR – The Steam Link app needs SteamVR on the PC to run VR games. If you skip this, games won’t launch.
  • Firewall blocking Steam Link – Windows Firewall may block the connection. When you first run Steam Link, allow it through the firewall.
  • Too far from router – Even with 5GHz, walls and distance kill the signal. Make sure you’re in the same room or close to the router.
  • Outdated Steam Link app – Always update the app to the latest version to avoid bugs.

Tips

  • For the best experience, use a dedicated router for VR streaming if your main router is busy with other devices.
  • Set your PC’s power plan to High Performance in Windows to avoid CPU throttling.
  • Close other bandwidth-heavy apps (like downloads or streaming videos) on your PC and network.
  • Use a USB cable to connect your headset to your PC for a wired connection if you have a Quest 2/3 – this is more stable than wireless.
  • In SteamVR, set the supersampling to 100% or lower to reduce load on your GPU.
  • If you have a dedicated router, set it to 80MHz channel width for more bandwidth.

Troubleshooting

Steam Link can’t find your PC – Ensure both devices are on the same network, your PC is on, and Steam is running. Try entering the PC’s IP manually. Also, check that Windows Firewall isn’t blocking Steam and SteamVR.

Streaming is laggy or blurry – Lower the bitrate in the Steam Link settings, move closer to the router, and make sure your PC is on Ethernet. Also, check if your GPU drivers are up to date.

Games won’t launch – Make sure SteamVR is installed and updated. Try launching a non-VR game first to test the stream.

Controller not working – In Steam, go to Settings > Controller and enable Xbox/PlayStation configuration support. For Quest controllers, they should work automatically, but you may need to enable them in SteamVR settings.

Audio not coming through headset – In Steam Link settings, select the correct audio output device. On Quest, you may need to set the audio to “Steam Link” in the app.

Connection drops frequently – This is usually a network issue. Restart your router, change Wi-Fi channels, or use a wired connection for your headset if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a VR-ready PC for Steam Link?

Yes, your PC still needs a decent GPU (like an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or better) and 8GB+ RAM to run VR games. Steam Link just streams the video, but the PC does all the heavy lifting.

Can I use Steam Link with a non-Steam VR headset?

Steam Link is designed for standalone headsets like Meta Quest. For PC VR headsets (like Valve Index or HTC Vive), you don’t need Steam Link – they connect directly via cable.

Is wireless streaming as good as a cable?

With a strong 5GHz network, the difference is minimal, but there can be slight compression artifacts and latency. For competitive gaming, a cable is better, but for casual play, wireless is great.

Can I play non-VR games with Steam Link?

Yes, you can stream any Steam game, but the interface is optimized for VR. Non-VR games will appear on a virtual screen.

Does Steam Link work on Mac?

The Steam Link app is available on macOS, but the PC you’re streaming from must be Windows for SteamVR. Macs don’t support SteamVR natively.

Why is my game only showing on the monitor and not in the headset?

Make sure the game is a VR title and that SteamVR is running. If it’s a non-VR game, it will only display on the virtual screen. Also, check that the headset is not in sleep mode.
