Spotlight Hour gives you a one-hour window in which a featured Pokémon appears much more often in the wild, making it a convenient time to look for its shiny version. It does not guarantee a shiny or increase the shiny odds by itself: you improve your chances mainly by checking as many eligible Pokémon as you can during the event.
What You’ll Need
- A Pokémon GO account and a phone that can run the game.
- A reliable internet connection, enough battery, and access to a safe place where you can play.
- Poké Balls, plus berries if you want help catching Pokémon after finding one. You can shiny-check without catching every Pokémon.
- The event’s local start and end time, and confirmation of which Pokémon is featured. Check the in-game event details or an up-to-date official announcement.
Step-by-Step
- Confirm the event details. Spotlight Hour usually runs on a scheduled weekday evening in your local time, but dates, times, featured Pokémon, and bonuses can change. Check the current event listing before planning. A featured Pokémon is not necessarily shiny-eligible; if it cannot appear shiny in the wild, extra spawns will not produce a shiny.
- Prepare before the hour. Charge your phone, check your connection, and clear Pokémon storage if you intend to catch a lot. Make room in your item bag for Poké Balls if needed. You can also set aside berries and choose a location with many visible spawns. Follow local rules and play somewhere safe; do not look at the screen while crossing roads or driving.
- Start where you can encounter many Pokémon. At the event start, open the map and look for the featured Pokémon. Its increased appearance rate means more chances to encounter it, not a guaranteed spawn at every spot. Walk only where permitted and safe, or play from a stationary location if it has enough spawns.
- Tap each featured Pokémon to check it. The shiny check happens when you enter the encounter. Look at the Pokémon’s appearance and the shiny indicator or animation; some shiny forms are subtle, so do not rely only on color. If it is not shiny, leave the encounter and tap another. You generally do not need to catch a non-shiny Pokémon to check the next one.
- Catch a shiny as soon as you confirm it. Use a suitable Poké Ball and, if useful, a berry to make the catch easier. Take care not to flee from the encounter accidentally. After catching it, check its details in your Pokémon storage to verify the shiny marker and consider favoriting it to avoid transferring it by mistake.
- Keep checking throughout the hour. Move between safe areas with spawns, or revisit refreshed spawn points. The event lasts only for its stated window, so prioritize encountering the featured species rather than spending the whole time sorting storage or catching unrelated Pokémon.
- Finish with a quick review. When the hour ends, check your Pokémon storage for the shiny and any other useful catches. If you did not find one, that is a possible outcome even after many checks; Spotlight Hour does not promise a shiny encounter.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming the shiny rate is boosted. Spotlight Hour boosts the featured Pokémon’s appearance rate. It does not automatically boost that Pokémon’s shiny odds. More encounters can mean more chances, but each eligible encounter is still governed by the game’s shiny availability and odds.
- Expecting every featured Pokémon to be shiny-eligible. Check whether its shiny form is available in Pokémon GO before the event. A Pokémon appearing in the wild does not, on its own, mean its shiny form can be found.
- Catching everything before checking. Catching is not required to reveal whether an encounter is shiny. If your goal is shiny hunting, tap, check, and leave non-shiny encounters to save time and Poké Balls.
- Trusting a color difference alone. Lighting, weather, and screen settings can make colors hard to judge. Watch for the in-game shiny indicator or animation, and check the Pokémon’s summary after catching it.
- Forgetting the event’s local schedule. The hour is brief, and schedules or featured species vary. Verify the date and local time rather than relying on an old post or a remembered schedule.
Tips
- Prioritize the number of eligible encounters. Shiny hunting is a chance-based process, so checking more featured Pokémon gives you more opportunities without guaranteeing a result.
- Use the Nearby display and the overworld map to find the featured species. Weather, location, and other game conditions can affect what you see, so spawn patterns may differ between players.
- If you have a limited supply of Poké Balls, shiny-check first and reserve catches for shinies or Pokémon you specifically want. A shiny can still flee in some circumstances, so do not assume that merely seeing it adds it to your collection.
- Play with the game open and responsive. A weak connection or app interruption can slow encounters; if the map stops updating, pause and restore the connection rather than repeatedly tapping without seeing results.
- Keep an eye on storage space and avoid mass-transferring Pokémon while rushing. Review catches after the event and use the shiny marker or Favorites feature as a safeguard.
- Use incense only if it suits your play plan and current game rules. It may attract Pokémon, but it does not make a shiny outcome certain, and item effects can vary with game updates or event conditions.
Troubleshooting
The featured Pokémon is not appearing: Confirm that the event has started in your local time and that you have the right featured species. Move to a safe area with more spawns, wait for the map to refresh, and check that your connection is working. Restarting the app may help if the map appears stuck, but avoid doing so if it would cost you valuable event time unless necessary.
You see spawns but cannot tell whether they are shiny: Tap the Pokémon and inspect it in the encounter, rather than judging its overworld icon. Watch for the shiny effect or indicator. If the game is lagging, wait for the encounter to finish loading before deciding.
You caught one but cannot find it: Search your Pokémon storage for the species and check its details. Make sure you are not viewing a filtered list that hides it. If you are unsure whether it is shiny, open its individual summary and look for the shiny marker.
The app disconnects or freezes: Check your network, close and reopen the app if needed, and return to the map once it loads. Do not assume an encounter was completed if the game closed mid-action; verify the Pokémon in storage before continuing.
No shiny appeared before the hour ended: There is no guaranteed catch or minimum number of checks that ensures one. You can continue looking for the species outside the event if it remains available, or wait for another appearance opportunity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Spotlight Hour increase shiny odds?
Not by default. It increases the featured Pokémon’s appearance rate, which gives you more chances to check it. Shiny availability and odds depend on the Pokémon and game rules.
Do I have to catch every Pokémon to check for a shiny?
No. Tap a Pokémon to enter its encounter and check its appearance. If it is not shiny, you can leave and check another.
Can every Spotlight Hour Pokémon be shiny?
No. Confirm that the featured Pokémon’s shiny form is available in Pokémon GO. Increased spawns do not unlock a shiny form that is unavailable.
Can a shiny Pokémon run away?
Yes, a shiny encounter is not an automatic catch. Use a suitable ball and berry if needed, and avoid fleeing from the encounter before securing it.
What happens if I miss the hour?
You miss that event’s concentrated spawn window, but the Pokémon may appear later through normal spawns or another event. Availability varies, so check current game announcements.
Is shiny hunting possible from home?
It can be, if Pokémon appear around your location or through available in-game attraction effects. The number of encounters may be lower than in a safe area with more spawns.
