How to Switch Profiles on Hulu

Card No. 06·49805 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide shows you how to switch between profiles on Hulu, so you can keep your watch history, recommendations, and Continue Watching list separate from others in your household. You’ll need a Hulu account with at least one profile already created (you can have up to six).

What You’ll Need

  • An active Hulu subscription
  • A device with the Hulu app or access to hulu.com in a web browser
  • Your Hulu login credentials (if not already signed in)

Step-by-Step

On a Web Browser (hulu.com)

  1. Open your web browser and go to hulu.com.
  2. If you’re not already signed in, click Log In in the top-right corner and enter your email and password.
  3. Once logged in, hover over the profile icon (a person silhouette) in the top-right corner of the screen. A dropdown menu will appear.
  4. In the dropdown, you’ll see a list of all profiles on your account. Click the profile you want to switch to. The page will reload and that profile’s home screen will appear.

On the Hulu App (Smart TV, Streaming Stick, Game Console, Mobile)

  1. Open the Hulu app on your device.
  2. If you’re not already signed in, select Log In and enter your credentials.
  3. Once you’re on the home screen, navigate to the profile icon. On most devices, it’s in the top-left corner (near the Hulu logo) or in the top-right. It looks like a person’s silhouette.
  4. Select the profile icon. A menu will slide out or a pop-up will appear showing all profiles on the account.
  5. Click or tap on the profile you want to use. The app will immediately switch to that profile and take you to its home screen.

On a Mobile Device (iOS/Android) – Quick Switch

  1. Open the Hulu app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the Profile icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen (on iPhone/iPad) or top-left (on Android).
  3. A menu will appear with a list of profiles. Tap the one you want to switch to.

When You’re in the Middle of Watching Something

  1. Press the Back button on your remote or the on-screen back arrow until you reach the main menu (home screen).
  2. Then follow the steps above to switch profiles.

Common Mistakes

  • Not being signed in: You cannot switch profiles if you’re not logged in. Make sure you’re signed in first.
  • Looking for a “Switch Profile” button on the home screen: There isn’t one. You must go through the profile icon menu.
  • Confusing the profile icon with the search icon: On some devices, the profile icon is subtle. Look for a person silhouette, not a magnifying glass.
  • Clicking on the profile name instead of the icon: On the web, the dropdown appears when you hover over the icon, not the text. The text may not be clickable.

Tips

  • Create a profile for each family member: This keeps recommendations accurate and prevents kids from seeing mature content (if you set up parental controls on their profile).
  • Use the “Kids” profile: Hulu offers a dedicated kids profile with age-appropriate content. You can switch to it the same way.
  • Rename profiles easily: Go to the profile icon > Manage Profiles to edit names, avatars, and maturity ratings.
  • Remember the last profile: Hulu usually remembers the last profile used on a device, so if you always watch on the same TV, you might not need to switch often.

Troubleshooting

  • Profile list doesn’t appear: Make sure you’re connected to the internet. Try refreshing the page or closing and reopening the app. If that fails, log out and log back in.
  • Clicking a profile does nothing: This is often a temporary glitch. Force-close the app (or refresh the browser) and try again. If it persists, restart your device.
  • You see “Who’s Watching?” screen every time: This is normal if you have multiple profiles and the device is set to ask each time. You can change this in Account settings under Profile.
  • Can’t find the profile icon on a smart TV: Some older TV apps have a different layout. Look for a gear icon (settings) or a person icon in the top bar. If you still can’t find it, check Hulu’s help center for your specific TV model.
  • Switched profiles but Continue Watching still shows old shows: Make sure you’re actually on the correct profile. Check the name in the top corner. If it’s correct, try restarting the app – sometimes it takes a moment to refresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many profiles can I have on Hulu?

You can create up to six profiles on a single Hulu account. This includes the main profile (the account owner) and five additional ones.

Can I switch profiles while a show is playing?

No, you need to exit the player first. Press back or exit to return to the main menu, then switch profiles.

Will switching profiles affect my watch history?

No. Each profile has its own watch history, Continue Watching, and recommendations. Switching profiles won’t erase anything from another profile.

Can I set a PIN for a profile?

Yes, you can set a PIN for profiles with maturity restrictions. Go to Manage Profiles, select the profile, and choose Profile PIN.

Why does Hulu show “Who’s Watching?” every time I open the app?

This happens when you have multiple profiles and the app is set to ask each time. You can change this in Account > Profile settings, but the option may not be available on all devices.

Can I switch profiles on Hulu with a voice remote?

Some devices with voice control (like Amazon Fire TV or Roku) allow voice commands like “Switch profile” or “Open Hulu profiles,” but it’s not universally supported. Using the on-screen menu is the most reliable method.
