Hulu Series to Binge This Weekend: August Picks

Card No. 06·51174 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

The calculator on this card is switched off while it is checked. The formula is below, and the worked example shows how to do the sum by hand.

If you are looking for a Hulu series to binge this weekend in August, the strongest current options are The Bear (if you have not caught up) and Only Murders in the Building (new episodes drop weekly). For a complete weekend commitment, Shōgun or The Handmaid’s Tale offer finished seasons you can power through without waiting.

Formula

Total watch time (hours) = (episodes per day × days in weekend × episode length in minutes) ÷ 60

Episodes you can finish = episodes per day × days in weekend

Variables:

  • Episodes per day – how many episodes you realistically watch in one sitting (or across the day).
  • Days in weekend – usually 2, but you might count a Friday night as a third.
  • Episode length – average runtime in minutes. Comedies run ~22–30 min; dramas run 45–60 min.

Worked Example

Using the defaults: 6 episodes per day, 2 days, 45-minute episodes.

Total watch time = (6 × 2 × 45) ÷ 60 = 540 ÷ 60 = 9 hours.

Episodes you can finish = 6 × 2 = 12 episodes.

So with a typical weekend, you can get through about 12 half-hour episodes or about 6 hour-long episodes. That is the difference between finishing a short comedy season and only starting a drama.

What to Watch This August on Hulu

Hulu’s catalog changes monthly, but several reliable bingeable series remain available. The list below reflects what is generally on the service in August, based on Hulu’s own library and licensing patterns.

  • The Bear – FX dramedy about a Chicago sandwich shop. Seasons 1–3 are available. Each episode is ~30 min, so you can finish a season in one weekend.
  • Only Murders in the Building – Comedy-mystery with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. New episodes drop Tuesday nights, so a weekend binge catches you up before the next one.
  • Shōgun – Epic historical drama set in feudal Japan. All 10 episodes of season 1 are up. Episodes run ~60 min, so plan for a full day.
  • The Handmaid’s Tale – Dystopian drama. All six seasons are available. If you start from episode 1, you will not finish in one weekend, but you can get through a season and a half.
  • Futurama – Animated comedy. Hulu has all 12 seasons. Great for background binging or for those who want something light.
  • Abbott Elementary – Mockumentary sitcom about a Philadelphia school. Seasons 1–3 are on Hulu. Episodes are 22 minutes, so a full season takes about 5 hours.

How to Choose Based on Your Weekend

Match the series length to your available time. Use the calculator above to estimate, but here are quick rules:

  • Half-day (4–6 hours) – Pick a comedy with 22–30 min episodes. You can finish 10–15 episodes, which covers most sitcom seasons.
  • Full day (8–10 hours) – A drama with 45–60 min episodes works. You can finish 8–12 episodes, enough for a full season of most shows.
  • Two full days (16–20 hours) – You can tackle a longer series like Shōgun (10 hrs) or The Bear seasons 1–3 (about 12 hrs total).
  • Only evenings – Stick to 2–3 episodes per night. That is 4–6 episodes total, which suits a short season like The Bear season 3 (10 episodes) over two weekends.

Common Binge-Watching Mistakes

People often underestimate episode length. A “45-minute drama” is usually 48–52 minutes with credits. If you plan for 45 and the episode is 55, you will run out of time before the finale.

Another mistake is ignoring season count. The Handmaid’s Tale has 56 episodes across six seasons. That is over 40 hours. You will not finish it in one weekend unless you watch nonstop.

Also, do not forget that Hulu shows ads unless you pay for the ad-free tier. With ads, a 45-minute episode takes about 55 minutes. Add that to your calculation if you are on the basic plan.

How to Maximize Your Weekend Binge

  1. Check the episode count and average runtime on Hulu’s detail page before starting.
  2. Set a target: “I want to finish season 2 by Sunday night.” Work backward from the total runtime.
  3. Use the calculator to see if that target is realistic. If it needs 14 hours and you only have 8, adjust your goal.
  4. Watch the first episode. If it does not hook you, switch. Do not force a show just because it is popular.
  5. Take breaks every 2–3 episodes to avoid burnout. Your retention drops after the fourth hour.

Hulu vs. Other Streaming Services for Binging

Hulu’s advantage is that it has both current network shows (next-day) and FX originals. Netflix tends to release full seasons at once, which is better for a true “all weekend” binge. Hulu often releases weekly for originals like Only Murders, which means you cannot finish a new season in one weekend.

If you want a complete season in one sitting, pick a show that has already finished airing. The Bear seasons 1–2 are complete; season 3 is complete but newer. Shōgun is a limited series, so it is done. The Handmaid’s Tale is fully complete as of 2025.

Hulu also has a large library of classic sitcoms like Seinfeld and King of the Hill, which are easy to binge because episodes are short and self-contained.

Cost and Plan Considerations

Hulu has two main plans: with ads (about $8/month) and without ads (about $18/month). The ad-free tier is worth it for binging because you save 10–15 minutes per hour. If you watch 10 hours in a weekend, that is 1.5–2 hours saved.

Hulu also offers bundles with Disney+ and ESPN+. If you already have those, you might not need a separate subscription. There is no extra cost for specific shows; the library is included in the base plan.

You can watch on your TV, phone, tablet, or computer. Hulu allows two simultaneous streams on the basic plan, so you can watch with someone else or on different devices.

Safety and Comfort While Binging

Long sitting sessions can cause eye strain and back pain. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Stand up and stretch every hour. Keep water nearby and avoid eating a huge meal right before watching, as that makes you sleepy.

If you are watching late at night, lower the screen brightness and enable night mode on your device. This reduces blue light exposure and helps you fall asleep after.

Do not watch while driving or operating machinery. That should be obvious, but it is worth saying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Hulu series to binge in one weekend?

For a single weekend, The Bear season 1 (8 episodes, ~30 min each) is ideal. That is about 4 hours total. If you want something longer, Shōgun (10 episodes, ~60 min) will take a full day but is a complete story.

Are there any new Hulu originals releasing this August?

Hulu typically adds new episodes of Only Murders in the Building on Tuesdays. Other releases vary by month. Check Hulu’s “New on Hulu” page for the current month’s additions. As of August, the major new drop is usually the next episode of a weekly series, not a full season.

Can I watch Hulu shows offline?

Yes, but only on the ad-free plan. You can download episodes to your phone or tablet through the Hulu app. Downloads expire after 30 days or 48 hours after you start watching. You cannot download on the ad-supported plan.

How many episodes can I realistically watch in a day?

Most people can handle 4–6 hours of TV in a day without feeling burned out. That is 8–12 half-hour episodes or 4–6 hour-long episodes. If you watch more than that, you will likely lose focus and miss details.

Is Hulu worth it just for binging?

If you watch more than 10 hours a month, yes. The ad-free plan costs about $18, which is less than a movie ticket. If you only watch one show, you might be better off buying the season on another platform. But Hulu has a large library, so most binge-watchers find it worth it.

What if I start a show and do not like it?

Stop after the first episode. Do not force yourself. Hulu has hundreds of options, so there is no reason to waste your weekend on something you do not enjoy. Try a different genre or a classic you have never seen.
