Yes, Canva can justify text. You can apply full justification to any text box so that both the left and right edges of your paragraph form straight, even lines. This guide shows you exactly where the justify button is, how it behaves, and the common issues you might run into.

Formula

This calculator estimates how many lines a block of justified text will occupy in Canva. It uses a rough rule of thumb: a 1 cm column width fits about 1.9 words of average length (5–6 characters) at a standard 12 pt font size. The formula is:

Lines = ceil( Words / (Width × 1.9) )

Where:

  • Words = total number of words in your paragraph
  • Width = the width of your text box in centimeters
  • 1.9 = average words per centimeter for a 12 pt font

The result is rounded up to the nearest whole line. This is a planning tool, not a precise layout engine — your actual line count depends on font family, letter spacing, and punctuation.

Worked Example

Suppose you have a text box that is 15 cm wide and you’ve written 120 words. Using the formula:

  1. Multiply width by 1.9: 15 × 1.9 = 28.5 words per line
  2. Divide total words by words per line: 120 ÷ 28.5 = 4.21
  3. Round up: 5 lines

So your justified paragraph will take about 5 lines. The calculator’s first output shows 5 lines, and the second shows 24 words per line (120 ÷ 5).

Where to Find the Justify Button in Canva

Justification is only available in the text editor, not on the main canvas toolbar. Select your text box, then click the “Align button in the top toolbar (it looks like four horizontal lines of varying lengths). A dropdown menu appears with alignment options: left, center, right, and justify. The justify icon shows lines that are flush on both sides, like a newspaper column.

If you don’t see the justify icon, make sure you’ve selected a text box that contains more than one line. Canva disables justification for single-line text because there’s nothing to justify.

How Justify Works in Canva (and Its Limitations)

When you click justify, Canva adjusts the spacing between words so that each line stretches from the left margin to the right margin. The last line of a paragraph is never stretched — it stays left-aligned, which is standard typographic practice.

Important limitations:

  • Justify only works on paragraph text, not on individual text boxes with a single line.
  • It does not apply to bulleted lists or numbered lists in the same way — the bullet/number stays left, but the text may justify.
  • Canva does not offer “justify allâ€ or “force justifyâ€ for the last line (like Microsoft Word’s “justify with last line centeredâ€).
  • Hyphenation is not automatic. Long words can create large gaps in narrow columns.

When to Use Justify in Canva

Justified text looks clean and formal, making it a good choice for:

  • Print documents like brochures, reports, or resumes
  • Newsletter-style layouts where a polished, columnar look is desired
  • Body text in multi-column designs (e.g., a two-column flyer)

Avoid justification when:

  • Your text box is narrow (under 8 cm). Justified text in narrow columns creates ugly “riversâ€ of white space.
  • You’re writing on a single line, like a heading or a button label.
  • You have a casual, informal design where left-aligned text feels more natural.

Common Problems and Fixes

Here are the most frequent issues users encounter with justify in Canva and how to solve them:

  • Justify button is greyed out: Your text box contains only one line. Add more text or press Enter to create a second line.
  • Huge gaps between words: Canva doesn’t hyphenate, so long words create big spaces. Try widening the text box, increasing font size, or rewriting with shorter words.
  • Last line looks left-aligned: That’s normal. Canva follows standard typography — the final line of a justified paragraph is never stretched.
  • Justify doesn’t work on lists: Convert your list to plain paragraphs separated by line breaks, then apply justify. You may need to manually add bullet symbols.

Justify vs. Other Alignment Options

Canva offers four alignment modes. Here’s how they compare:

  • Left align: Text lines up on the left, ragged on the right. Easiest to read for most people.
  • Center align: Each line is centered. Best for headings or short lines, not long paragraphs.
  • Right align: Text lines up on the right, ragged on the left. Used for captions or edge-bleed designs.
  • Justify: Both edges are straight. Looks formal but can create spacing issues in narrow boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Canva justify text on mobile?

Yes, the justify option exists in the Canva mobile app. Tap the text box, then tap “Align in the bottom toolbar, and choose the justify icon. The behavior is the same as on desktop.

Why is my justified text not working on PDF export?

Justified text usually exports correctly to PDF. If you see misalignment, check that the PDF viewer isn’t substituting a different font. Also, try flattening the design (download as PDF with “flatten PDF enabled) to preserve the layout.

Can I justify text in Canva for a single line?

No. Justification requires at least two lines of text. For a single line, you can only use left, center, or right alignment.

Does Canva support hyphenation with justified text?

No. Canva does not automatically hyphenate words. This can lead to large gaps in narrow columns. You can manually insert a hyphen and a line break, but it’s tedious for long documents.

Is justified text harder to read than left-aligned?

For most people, yes. Justified text can create irregular spacing between words, which slows reading speed, especially in narrow columns. Left-aligned text is generally recommended for body copy in digital media.
