LG G5: Block Calls & Texts Easily

Card No. 06·48964 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To block calls and texts on an LG G5, you use the built-in blocking features in the Phone and Messaging apps, plus Android’s Do Not Disturb mode. This guide walks you through each method, from blocking a single number to silencing all notifications, and covers what to do when blocked messages still appear.

How Call Blocking Works on the LG G5

The LG G5 runs Android 7.0 Nougat (upgradable to 8.0 Oreo), and its call blocking is handled by the stock Phone app. Unlike some phones that hide the option, LG places it right inside the call log or contact screen. When you block a number, calls from that number are sent straight to voicemail (or dropped, depending on your carrier) and you won’t get a missed call notification. The blocked caller isn’t told they’ve been blocked—they just hear the phone ring and then get voicemail.

Text blocking works differently: the G5’s default Messaging app can block numbers, and blocked texts are moved to a separate “Blocked messages” folder rather than being deleted. This means you can still read them if you want, but you won’t get an alert. Note that blocking a number in the Phone app does not automatically block texts from that same number—you have to block it separately in the Messaging app.

Block Calls from a Specific Number

There are two main ways to block a caller on the LG G5:

  • From the call log: Open the Phone app, tap the recent calls tab, find the number you want to block, and tap it to open the call details. Then tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner and select Block number. Confirm when prompted.
  • From a contact: Open the Contacts app, select the contact, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Block number. This blocks all calls from that contact.

To see your blocked numbers list, go to Phone app → three-dot menu → Settings → Call blocking. From there you can add numbers manually (e.g., if you received a call from a number not in your log) or remove a number to unblock it.

Block Texts from a Specific Number

To block text messages on the LG G5:

  1. Open the Messaging app.
  2. Open the conversation from the number you want to block.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.
  4. Select Block number (or Block contact if it’s a saved contact).
  5. Confirm the block.

After blocking, the conversation is moved to Messaging → three-dot menu → Settings → Blocked messages. You can open that folder to read blocked texts, or delete them. If you later unblock the number, the conversation will reappear in your main message list.

Block Unknown or Private Numbers

If you’re getting spam calls from hidden or unknown numbers, you can block all calls from numbers that don’t show caller ID:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu → Settings.
  3. Tap Call blocking.
  4. Toggle on Block unknown numbers (may be labeled “Block anonymous calls” on some versions).

This will send any call with no caller ID (or with “Unknown” displayed) directly to voicemail. Note that this can also block legitimate calls from businesses that hide their number, so use it only if you’re getting a lot of spam.

Use Do Not Disturb to Block All Calls & Texts Temporarily

If you want to block all calls and texts for a set period (like during a meeting or at night), use Do Not Disturb (DND):

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification shade.
  2. Tap the Do Not Disturb quick toggle (the icon looks like a circle with a line through it, or a star). If you don’t see it, swipe left on the quick settings row to find it.
  3. Tap Total silence to block all sounds and vibrations, or Alarms only to allow alarms.

You can also schedule DND: go to Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb and set automatic rules (e.g., every night from 11 PM to 7 AM). By default, DND blocks all calls and texts unless you add exceptions. You can allow calls from starred contacts or repeat callers (if the same number calls twice within 15 minutes, it will come through).

What to Do If Blocked Texts Still Appear

A common issue on the LG G5 is that after blocking a number, you still get a notification for a text from that number. This usually happens because the block was applied after the message was already received, or because the block only applies to the Messaging app and not to third-party SMS apps you might use. Here’s how to fix it:

  • Check that you blocked the number in the Messaging app, not just the Phone app. They are separate.
  • If you use a third-party texting app (like Textra or Pulse), you’ll need to block the number within that app’s settings, as the system block may not apply.
  • If the block is in place but you still get a notification, try restarting the phone—this refreshes the block list.
  • If the problem persists, go to Settings → Apps → Messaging and tap Clear cache (not data, or you’ll lose your message history).

Using Carrier-Level Blocking as a Backup

If the built-in blocking isn’t enough—for example, if a spammer keeps calling from new numbers—you can contact your carrier to block a number at the network level. Most carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) offer free or paid call-blocking features that work on any phone. You can usually activate these through your carrier’s website or app, or by calling customer service. This is also useful if you’re getting texts from shortcodes (5-digit numbers) that the G5’s block feature won’t catch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does blocking a number on LG G5 also block texts?

No. Blocking a number in the Phone app only blocks calls. You must also block the number in the Messaging app to stop texts. The two blocks are independent.

Will a blocked caller know they’re blocked?

No. The call will ring normally and then go to voicemail (or be dropped, depending on your carrier). The caller won’t get a message saying they’ve been blocked.

Can I block a number that’s not in my contacts?

Yes. You can block any number from your call log, or manually add it in the Phone app’s Call blocking settings. You don’t need to save it as a contact first.

How do I unblock a number on LG G5?

Go to Phone app → three-dot menu → Settings → Call blocking. Tap the X next to the number to remove it. For texts, go to Messaging → three-dot menu → Settings → Blocked messages, then tap and hold the conversation and select Unblock.

Why am I still getting texts from a blocked number?

You likely blocked the number in the Phone app but not in the Messaging app. Also, if you use a third-party SMS app, you need to block the number within that app. If the block is set correctly, restart your phone or clear the Messaging app’s cache.
